 Forty bad years...

Email updates June 9, 2007
The Other Israel in cooperation with Occupation Magazine

It is now hours before the major Tel-Aviv "Kibush40" demonstration - in which all peace groups participate - the culmination of a wild week marking 40 years of occupation. Much of the frentic protests remain ignored by the mainstream media. Our own report for The Other Israel will be sent to you with next week's billboard.

On the West Bank: Muslim graveyard vandalized by followers of biblical war criminal
Efrat Weiss - Ynet - The worshippers arrived at the cemetery escorted by soldiers, broke tombstones, and wrote things on them such as “Death to Arabs”. Rabbi Arik Asherman, head of Rabbis for Human Rights, denounced the incident. “As rabbis, we protest this desecration and are reminded of our pain when such acts are committed against us.” According to an official IDF response, the entry of Jewish worshippers into the cemetery was authorized in order to allow them to visit the Yeshua Ben Nun tomb nearby. [EDITOR`S COMMENT: Yeshua Ben Nun is remembered as the perpetrator of genocide on the Canaanites in early Biblical times...]

Hebrew University appoints former Shin Bet chief as "vice president of external relations"
Tamara Traubmann - Haaretz - Twenty-seven faculty members unsuccessfully tried to block the appointment, claiming that it runs counter to the humanistic values the university should promote. [EDITOR`S COMMENT: Could this be the beginning of the authorities` announced campaign against the UK cultural boycott?]

An Israeli defeat in Sderot
Ze`ev Schiff - Haaretz - "The changes in the battlefield and the nature of the fighting have led to a situation in which Israel`s strategic (and not only geographic) depth is insignificant. If what is happening in the Gaza Strip were to happen to Israel in the West Bank, we would be back in a situation like that during the War of Independence, and this could include the expulsion of terrorism supporters." [EDITOR`S COMMENT: this chilling remark by a senior Haaretz military commentator reflects that ethnic cleansing of the West Bank is considered an option by the military echelon.]

MEPs Stand up for the immediate release of 45 Palestinian MPs held in Israeli jail
Luisa Morgantini - Right before the beginning of the debate with Mr. Solana on the situation on the Middle East, 45 MEPs stood up symbolically in the plenary, each representing one of the 45 Members of the Palestinian Legislative Council detained in the Israeli jails in a clear violation of international legality.

 40 Bad Years
Uri Avnery - www.gush-shalom.org - International opinion can express itself in a thousand different ways. It influences the policy of governments and civil society. The attempts at boycott are only an early symptom. (...) Every human being wants to be proud of his country. The occupation deprives us of this.

`If my name was not Begin there would have been no sensation`
AFP (quoting Maariv) - In the photo, the 32-year-old Avinadav Begin and a young Palestinian are seen facing off with Israeli soldiers in riot gear during a weekly demonstration against the barrier. "I would like to blow up this barrier, it will not help bring peace between Israel and Palestine" the young Begin reportedly wrote.

Want to end the boycott? End the occupation
Yosef Gorali - Maariv - We seem to have forgotten that there is a condition to membership in this prestigious club, the Family of Democratic Nations: Namely, to be truly a democracy. Does Israel fulfil this condition? Are we truly a democracy?

 Moving toward moment of truth
Jerome Segal - Ynet - Rather than allowing the next Palestinian elections to be about personalities, or corruption, or economics or good government, Israel should strive to have them be about peace and the two-state solution. (...) The strategy that is needed requires going in the direction that Condoleezza Rice advocates, but going much further. (...) The next Palestinian elections should be a referendum on an end-of-conflict offer from Israel.

Leaving the Zionist ghetto (Avraham Burg interview)
Ari Shavit - Haaretz - [Burg:] "Herzl`s Zionism can`t work anymore. To define the State of Israel as a Jewish state is the key to its end. A Jewish state is explosive. It`s dynamite. We have to leave Herzl behind and move to Ahad Ha`am."

and a few selected from earlier days:

Ali Al-Azhari - Despite the despair among Palestinians and in the Israeli `peace camp` of ever reaching a solution that will end occupation, or perhaps because of that despair, I cannot, as a person and as a Palestinian, remain indifferent to these voices, loud and clear, coming from today’s South Africa. After all, who can tell us better than the citizens of South Africa, black and white, about the efficacy of the boycott in fighting tyrrany and oppression? And who hopes and yearns for it to be applied more than the Palestinians?

Benny Gefen - Yisraeli - Let us hope that these boycotts arouse our consciousness before they cause our economic collapse.

Hank Silver - I am neither a self-hating nor anti-Semitic Jew. I am proud of and know a good deal about my Jewish religion and culture. The dream of a “Jewish homeland” was a driving force in my family’s life. But I am unalterably opposed to, and for the past several years have actively worked against Israel’s occupation, inhumane treatment and killing of Palestinians.
