Bush`s credibility
deficit (Palestinian reactions to the proposed `Regional
Conference`)
Khaled Amayreh - Al-Ahram - (...) the kind of state the
Palestinians have in mind would include 100 per cent of the occupied
territories, with East Jerusalem as its capital. They are unlikely to trade that
vision for a territorially disconnected state lacking sovereignty and authority,
whatever the blandishments offered in the remaining months of the Bush
presidency.

Israel and Palestine: an invitation to
negotiate
Daniel Levy - Guardian - [Bush`s] speech represented more
of the same failed policies with even less chance of success. (...) What I
propose is a jujitsu move that leverages the expectations created by the speech
toward achieving a constructive, if unlikely, outcome.

Seven
wounded in Bilin`s nonviolent demonstration
IMEMC - Seven nonviolent
protestors were wounded in an anti-wall protest in the West Bank village of
Bilin. Among the injured were Israeli activist Jonathan Pollack and Palestinian
activist Ibrahim Bournat who was hit in the head with a rubber-coated steel
bullet and had to be taken to a local hospital.

A
racist Jewish state
Editorial - Haaretz - Every day the Knesset has
the option of passing laws that will advance Israel as a democratic Jewish state
or turn it into a racist Jewish state. There is a very thin line between the
two. This week, the line was crossed.

Blair holds first meeting with Quartet/Zahhar: sidestepping
Hamas will destroy his credibility
IMEMC/PIC - Former UK Prime
Minister Tony Blair met with the diplomatic Quartet in Lisbon for the first time
yesterday, in his new role as the special envoy on the Middle East. Senior Hamas
political leader Dr. Mahmoud Al-Zahhar belittled hopes attached to the mission
of Tony Blair, warning the new envoy that any attempt to marginalize Hamas
Movement will cost him his credibility.

Israel releases 256 prisoners
IMEMC -
Israel is releasing 256 Palestinian prisoners - in a move calculated to bolster
the government of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

High Time of Cynicism
Adam Keller - The Other
Israel - The governments of Israel and the United States are already for years
on record as supporting a Two State Solution — and nevertheless Israel`s actual
military occupation of the territory, now entering upon its forty-first year,
has rarely seemed so far from coming to an end.

Fatah leaders call early elections `a crazy step`
IMEMC/PIC - The
central council of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) concluded a
two-day meeting yesterday with a largely symbolic endorsement of President
Mahmoud Abbas` plan to hold early elections. Calling an election would be a
risky move for Abbas; his popularity is low, as is that of the Fatah party, and
there is no guarantee that he would win the presidency again.(...)A number of
prominent Fatah leaders has described the call for early elections without
national harmony as “a call for early civil war”.

`All
the dreams we had are now gone` (Wolfensohn on his time as M-E
envoy)
Shahar Smooha - Haaretz - You need to have a secure Israel,
which is very clear, and you need to have a Palestinian community that feels it
can have hope. The polls show that Israelis and Palestinians have such a balance
- they`d like to come to a deal on borders, they`d like to reach a situation in
which each can get on with their lives and live side by side for centuries. I
think the average person, whether it be Hamas or Fatah, or religious or not
religious, would love to settle down and live.

`I think you`d have to find some way to talk to
Hamas`

interview

another two of earlier
days:
Yes, Bush is naked, what of
it?
Tony Karon -
TomDispatch - The U.S. demanded that, prior to any progress in the "peace
process," President Arafat would have to cede control over Palestinian finances
and security forces to the democratically elected legislature as well as the
cabinet and prime minister it picked. Then Arafat died and the U.S.-favored
Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas became President. Sharon promptly declared Abbas
too weak for peace, a prophecy he helped fulfill by showing the Palestinian
electorate that Abbas would achieve nothing through patient, plaintive
conversations with Washington. Still, those dopey Americans didn`t seem to get
the joke; so, perversely, they pushed for Palestinian elections, which Hamas
duly won.

U.N. Warns of Possible Gaza Collapse
Steven Erlanger -
NY Times - "Gaza is full of vegetables and flowers grown for export markets that
are being sold cheaply or are rotting."
