Scandal in the third grade
Tom Segev - Haaretz - "Living Together in Israel," by Ophira Gal and Shira Goodman, is a very good book, perhaps a final attempt to save Israeli society from itself, beginning in third grade. The political scandal that erupted this week revolved around one sentence in the [schoolbook`s] Arabic version: "The Arabs call the war `Nakba,` that is, a war of disaster and loss, while the Jews call it the `War of Independence.`" The true scandal lies in the fact that this sentence is not included in the version intended for Jewish students, as though the Nakba is merely part of Arab village folklore. Jewish students who use CET textbooks will come across the term for the first time in ninth grade.

 IDF company suspended following the shooting of a Palestinian civilian
By Efrat Weiss/John Smith - Y-Net/IMEMC - Maj. Gen. Gadi Shamni, head of the Israeli army Central Command, ordered the company involved in the shooting of a Palestinian bystander on Thursday be suspended from active duty. A Military Police investigation has been launched into the incident.

 Leftist arrested for `crossing line marked on floor`
Yoav Friedman - Ynet - Police officers dispatched to the checkpoint told the activist, Yifat Doron, that the checkpoint commander had complained she was getting in the way and must therefore accompany them for questioning at the Ariel police station. After the woman was questioned, the police agreed to release her if she promised not to arrive at the checkpoint for 15 days. Doron, however, refused to do so and was arrested. She spent the night at the Neve Tirza Prison for Women.

 Israel to select which stranded Gazans could go home
Ghassan Bannoura & John Smith - Associated Press/IMEMC/Y-Net - Instead of opening the Rafah Border Crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, some (but apprently not all) of the Gazas who had long been stuck on the Egyptian side will be allowed to go home by a long and roundbout route via Israeli territory (and with the Israeli authorities deciding who will and who not be allowed in).

 Abbas and Hamas respond positively to unity call by Arab leadership in Israel

Dina Ezzat - Al-Ahram - According to one informed Egyptian diplomat, "at this stage and maybe for some years to come Israel is only willing to talk about ways to administer its occupation of the Palestinian territories and not about potential political solutions to terminate this occupation." Speaking on conditions of anonymity, he added that the two Arab foreign ministers were basically going to Israel with a message for Israeli public opinion and the US administration rather than on a mission almost-impossible to commit the Israeli government to start final status talks on the Palestinian track.
