Subject: [TOI_Billboard] Barak, don`t come to the rally! - November03, 2007

Barak, don`t come to the rally!

Here follow the November 3, 2007 press picks from what was published recently by different sources - posted by TOI-staff on Occupation Magazine. (We do the updating on Saturdays, but OM is updated daily, each day of the week by a different editor.)

Barak, don`t come to the rally!
Moriah Shlomot - Barak is a ticking bomb, mentally fixated, completely devoid of ideology or moral values. Barak is not Rabin`s successor, and I am deeply disappointed that this year he would get to mount a podium which should have been reserved for true people of peace.

Ex-Minister Aloni: Barak should be tried by UN
Ronny Shaked - Yediot Aharonot - "Collective punishment is an inhumane move. Ehud Barak is the most dangerous person in the State of Israel, because of his character, because he’s a man of war, and because of his arrogance. He does all those extreme things because he thinks that he’s beating Bibi (Netanyahu) that way” said ex-Education Minister Shulamit Aloni.

 Soldiers on the roof
ISM - Six soldiers began occupying the roof of the house of the Ewawy family in the old city of Hebron, while only a 14 year old girl, who had just returned from school, was at home. The girl began screaming for help, and neighbors called for international human rights workers to come.

 Hebron update 15-21 October 2007
CPT - The Israeli young man began speaking with the settler boy, to deter him from harassing the Palestinians. More settlers arrived, and one man, wearing a kippa (skull cap), began to pick olives from the tree. Israeli police arrived, followed by members of Breaking the Silence, one of whom advised Amro to file a complaint against the settler picking olives (who left shortly thereafter.) The Palestinians and internationals finished harvesting, drank coffee, and departed.

 “Welcome To Gaza!”
Kris Peterson - Palestine Chronicle - It is clear that life continues with gusto in Gaza. Conscious of Gaza’s deteriorating circumstances, Palestinians consistently declare "Welcome to my country! My beautiful country!" followed by an overly enthusiastic handshake. Still, whenever Mona shrugs and says, “This is Gaza!”, whenever Raji offers a wry smile, whenever Khalil laughs sarcastically, whenever I speak with anyone here, I detect an ounce of some profound melancholy lingering in the eyes of my colleagues.

 Gazans` place at Annapolis
Terry Walz - Palestine Chronicle - The core issues of borders, settlements, refugees, and Jerusalem have been put on the back burner. The situation in Gaza is left unattended. This is peace processing, not peace making.

Abbas prays with Hamas leaders, PA security arrests Hamas activists
Rasheed Hilal/Ali Waked - IMEMC/Y-Net - The startling news of senior Hamas leaders invited to share Friday prayers with President Mahmud Abbas (Abu Mazen) in Ramallah is immediately followed by news of PA security forces raiding and arresting Hamas militants on the northern and southern ends of the West Bank. (Ed.)

 No `Israelis` in Israel?
Aviram Zino - Ynet - There are currently over 132 different nationalities recognized by the State of Israel for use in registering for an ID card but `Israeli` is not one of them. [If it would be possible to fill in "Israeli" this would avoid identification of ethnicity... - ed.]

Court orders Jewish town to set aside land for Arabs
Jack Khoury - Haaretz - The couple, Ahmed and Fathina Zvidat, graduates of the archaeology department at Jerusalem`s Bezalel College, tried in 2006 to find a place to live in northern Israel. When the two wanted to move to Rakefet, they were required to undergo a "suitability test"... etc.

Boston solidarity with beleaguered Sabeel conference
"Attacking and demonizing someone like Archbishop Tutu by calling him an Anti-Semite because he criticizes Israeli human rights abuses doesn`t change the fact that the occupation is wrong," stated Martin Federman, co-chair of the Boston chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace.
