December21, 2004 - [TOI-alerts] Tali Fahima - with a call to write letters from WOFPP) >> |
|
A call from Women for Female Political Prisoners (WOFPP) to write protest letters about Tali Fahima, now already months behind bars without having been found guilty of anything in a proper trial: Tali Fahima is an a-typical peace activist -Not a member of any exisiting peace group -Not a child of European ("Ashkenazi") immigrants, but Oriental -She started all alone an intensive dialogue in the Jenin "lions' den" -She is treated by the General Security Service as a ticking bomb The media created an atmosphere of "if the Shabak (GSS) suspects her, then probably something is wrong with her." For us, her fate symbolizes in how narrow a space we peace activists operate - God forbid when somebody not "embedded" starts thinking for herself; and doesn't behave the routine way (participating in coordinated activities, shouting a bit through the internet) but really wants to hear the other side's story. ------- Forwarded message follows ------- From: "Susanne Moses" <susanne.moses@gmx.ch> Subject: Urgent action for Tali Fahima Date sent: Mon, 20 Dec 2004 14:50:09 +0100 Women`s Organization for Political Prisoners (WOFPP)<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> P.O. Box 31811, Tel Aviv Tel : +972-3-5227124 E-mail: havakell@012.net.il 20 December 2004 Dear Friends, We send you [hereafter] the report by the lawyer of Tali Fahima. The interrogation methods used against herinclude: sleep deprivation, food deprivation, painful handcuffing to a chair for long periods and sexual harassment. After 28 days of intensive interrogation, no evidence was found against her. She was not released but transferred to administrative detention in Neve Tirtza prison for 3 months. During this period of arrest (fromSeptember 5, 2004 to December 5, 2004) Ms Fahima was kept separated from the other prisoners. She was allowed access to only a limited number ofbooks, and deprived of the right to make phone calls, except to her lawyer. She was repeatedly punished with solitary confinement and denial of visits, cigarettes and prevented from buying basic needs in the prison??™s cantina. On Sunday, December 5, 2004, Ms Fahima was transferred again to GSS interrogations compound for 12 days, in spite the face that GSS representative admitted at court that there is no reliable evidence to put her on trial. In a meeting with her lawyer Ms Ben Nathan dated December 7 she complained about: 1. Interrogations lasting long hours where she is tightly handcuffed to a chair, behind her back. During visit time she was also held tightlyhandcuffed and signs were clearly visible on her wrists. Despite therequest of her lawyer, the prison guard refused to release her hands, arguing that "those are the orders". It should be remembered that an IsraeliSupreme Court decision 5100/94 (The Committee Against Torture in Israel vs. TheState of Israel) forbade the tying of prisoners and tight handcuffing asmethods of physical punishment or mean of interrogation. 2. Tali Fahima was denied access to the toilets during the interrogationsfor hours on end. Her interrogators, including one code-named "Gil,"said to her that the Israeli Security Services instructions allow denial ofaccess to the toilet. 3. In spite of the long interrogation periods lasting late into the night, she was asked to wake up at dawn. When she refused to do it, she deniedaccess to cigarettes for 4 days. 4. Ms Fahima is moved within the interrogation compound with her eyes covered so tightly that the red signs resulting from the pressure are clearly visible on her brow, according to her lawyer. 5. The interrogators and male prison guards come into close physical contactwith her. Tali was let to understand that the harsh conditions and methods are usedagainst her because she is exercising her right to remain silent. Ms. Fahima is only exercising her legal right, which in no way entitles the authorities to punish her, physically or in any other way. ~~~ # http://www.geocities.com/keller_adam/TheOtherIsrael_speakers.html Billboard for Israeli peace activist speakers abroad --you would like to make a speaking tour? --you are going abroad and have still place for more invitations? --your itinerary is final and you want people to know where you will speak? --you need an Israeli speaker for your peace organization?
