| An Important
Victory For Clean Water |
For years, the South Florida Water
Management District has pumped billions of gallons of polluted water
directly into Lake Okeechobee -- the state’s largest surface drinking
water supply. The district had no permits to do this, and the results
were massive toxic algae blooms, dramatic declines in fish and wildlife
populations, and poisoned drinking water for communities that rely on
the lake.
Earthjustice started fighting
this problem in 1997, and on December 11th a federal judge in Miami
ruled that pumping such as this, without the required Clean Water Act
permits, is illegal.
The decision has national implications. The court was clear: you need a
permit to transfer polluted water. And that permit, of course, is going
to have to impose pollution limits that meet Clean Water Act standards.
Thanks to Vawter "Buck" Parker, Executive Director,
Earthjustice for providing this information to our readers. |

Putting Passion Into Practice |
Join DU Volunteers in Memphis
on March 9-10, 2007 for our National Leadership Conference. Ducks
Unlimited’s volunteers come from all walks of life, but they share a
common passion for waterfowl, wetlands and habitat conservation. It’s
that passion that allows DU to conserve thousands of acres every year.
Thanks to people like you, who put your passions into practice by
volunteering for DU, we’re able to conserve critical habitats.
As the volunteer leaders of Ducks Unlimited, we want to celebrate your
success and arm you with the latest tools and information you need to be
better volunteer leaders in your states.
Turning Your Volunteer Visions into Reality
Primos founder and CEO Will Primos will share his story of how he put
his passion for the great outdoors into practice as an industry-leading
game call business. We’ll also hear from international best-selling
author and noted authority on leadership, Mark Sanborn, who will share
with us how to become better leaders through dedication, passion and
creativity.
Network with Other Volunteer Leaders
Recruitment goals, success stories, tools you can use and this year’s
Volunteer Celebration Day scheduled for August 4 are some of the things
you’ll hear at this year’s conference.
Learn About Our Conservation Achievements
and Challenges
Conservation is what fuels all our passions. Join us in Memphis to learn
what our conservation team is working on throughout North America and
how to pass this on to your local volunteers. We’ll also hear the latest
on Wetlands for Tomorrow, DU’s ambitious comprehensive campaign for
conservation.
Recreational Opportunities
Tour DU’s National Headquarters
Friday, March 9 - This year’s Leadership Conference
brings us to the heart of the Mississippi Delta and the home of DU’s
National Headquarters (otherwise known as NHQ). If you’ve never visited
the famous NHQ, this is your chance to tour the center of DU’s
operations. DU’s Federal Duck Stamp collection, wildlife art and
sprawling lake are a sight you don’t want to miss.
Try Your Luck in Tunica
Saturday, March 10 – Whether you enjoy golf, gambling or shooting,
Tunica, Mississippi, has it all. On Saturday, join your DU friends for a
short bus ride to Tunica and try your luck at one of the city’s 10
sprawling casinos, or head to the Grand Casino to test your shooting
skills at the famous Willows Sporting Clays & Hunting Center.
A nominal fee will be collected at the registration desk for

Incomplete Event Tickets |
| A number of event tickets
come in with the attendee's name only. These tickets showing name only
with no additional information will create the following problem. A
current attendee will not have their membership renewed because the
ticket can not be matched with an existing file in the database or a new
member will not have a membership file set up. Remind everyone to
completely fill out their event ticket. What may seem like a time saver
up-front is actually suppressing the overall process and developing
problems on the backside. |

|
Insurance Certificate |
| Your event is coming up and
you have your venue booked. Does the venue need a certificate of
insurance? You may want to check with the business to see if they need
this. You can call in or email
Walter
Brooks 800-496-7640 with the location name, address, city, state,
and zip. Include email address or fax number if you need the turn around
time faster. |
|
| Is
Your Email Address Correct |
| Florida Area Chairs and
Senior Volunteers are asked to ensure that your email address is kept
current with the Regional Directors, State Volunteer Chair, and the
State Recruiting Chair. Correct email addresses ensure prompt
communication among everyone as we continue our conservation goals.
Remember, if you change your email address, let everybody know, and
don't forget to change it here at the DUcknet, you wouldn't want to miss
this now would you? |
