  • The Secrets of Electronic Craps
  • Pssst...! Wanna know a secret?

How about the secrets of winning at electronic craps slot machines?

There are a lot of new slot machines in casinos, and a few might resemble a craps layout. These are especially popular in places where real craps is illegal - like in some Indian casinos. Technically these games are just slot machines, the casinos say, and not illegal dice games.

Wanna know how craps pros increase their winnings at electronic craps?

    Let’s find out!

The first thing you should do is look at the playing area. You will probably see no hard ways, no don’t come, and no don’t pass. You also need to read the instructions on the side of the machine, as there are two basic machine types.

The first type is like a normal craps game - You win on the 7/11 comeout and lose if a 2, 3 or 12 is rolled.

The second basic type is a "crapless" machine - You win only on the seven comeout, there are no craps numbers, and any other number (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 ,11, or 12) becomes the point. This crapless game is very bad for the player as the casino edge is higher than the regular game. If you have a choice, play the regular game rather than the crapless one.

In either case, find the chart depicting the payoffs for all the numbers. You may be surprised to find totally different odds than you are used to. In addition, the machine only pays off even dollars. Let’s look at an example.

Let’s say you normally bet $6 on both the six and eight, and for this bet you get 7:6 odds, or $7 when you win. But now you look at the chart and it says that 6 & 8 place bets pay 2.15 for 1. Wow, you think, this pays more than a regular bet! But 2.15 for 1 means 1.15 to 1, so if you bet $1 you only get $1.15. Plus, you usually get paid in even dollars and if the payoff is $1.50, you only get $1.

So, if you bet $6 you will get $7 (1.15 x $6 = $6.90), but if you bet $3 you win $3 (rounded down from $3.45). This 1.15 to 1 casino odds turns out to be a 2.3% casino advantage, compared to 1.5% in "normal" craps. Make sure that you always bet the right amount so the machine "rounds up" your win instead of rounding it down.

One advantage to playing electronic craps lies in the minimum bet - it’s usually only 25 cents. And most machines have a 25 cent minimum and a $25 maximum bet so you can test your craps systems very inexpensively!

For example, let’s look at a simple double as you lose Martingale type system. In a normal seven level $5 minimum game ($5, $10, $20, $40, $80, $160, $320) you can lose up to $635.00 . But now you can test at the same seven levels (.25, .50, $1, $2, $4, $8, $16) and lose only a maximum of $31.75 . This is a perfect way to test a new or developing system!

The other advantage to electronic craps is that the machines usually have a place to swipe your comp card. Your comps here, however, are counted as slot machine credit, not for table games. You can also use slot coupons and special slot promotions to play electronic craps.

So, the next time you see a craps slot machine, give it a try - it’s certainly worth a quarter!

Pssst...! Now you know the secrets of electronic craps!

Meet Jean Scott - The Frugal Gambler
    By Steve Bourie

I first heard of Jean Scott back in the early 1990s. I was reading an issue of the Las Vegas Advisor newsletter in which the publisher, Anthony Curtis, referred to her as “The Queen of Ku Pon.” He wrote about her ability to exploit comps from casinos and he said she was so good at it that she spent 49 out of 50 nights for free in Las Vegas casino hotels. On top of that, two of those nights included New Year’s Eve and the Super Bowl!

Of course, back then Jean was completely unknown, but that has changed through the years. In 1995 I saw her on the CBS program 48 Hours. A camera crew followed Jean and her husband Brad as they left Indanapolis for a vacation in Las Vegas and during the course of the next few days the crew followed them as they played video poker at the Stardust.

Unfortunately, the gambling Gods were not smiling on Jean and Brad, as they were down $2,000 and it looked like they would be portrayed on national TV as big-time losers. However, their video poker play earned them lots of extra entries into a prize drawing and they were lucky enough to win a new car valued at $16,000, plus $3,000 in cash.

It was the perfect ending to a near disastrous event and it started Jean on the road to gambling stardom.

PLACE BET PERCENTAGES BY ZEKE FEINBERG

If you make a lot of place bets, you might wonder what the casino advantage is, compared to the pass line's 1.4% . If you think that it's more than 1.4%, you're correct. But what if you place more than one number at a time - how does that effect the casino edge?

Let's look at one number first - the eight. As you know, there are five ways to win (2-6, 3-5, 4-4, 5-3, and 6-2) but six ways to lose (1-6, 2-5, 3-4, 4-3, 5-2, 6-1). The number of events equals the ways to win, plus the ways to lose, so we have a total of eleven possible events. When you win on the 8, you get back $7 ($6 at 7:6 odds) plus your bet of $6, for a total of $13.

If you bet $6 on the 8 eleven times, you have invested a total of $66. You will win five times for a total of $65 ($13x5) and lose $1 ($66-$65). Divide loss (1) by investment (66) and you get the casino edge of 1.515. Not bad, but still higher than the 1.4% pass line. Now lets look at placing both the six and eight together for $6 each. There are now ten ways to win (5 on the six, and 5 on the eight) but still only six ways to lose (on the seven).

We will take both bets down after either number hits, so after a win we receive back $6 (from the six) + $6 (from the eight) + $7 (from the winner) for a total return of $19. The number of events now is 16 (ten plus six) and the total investment is $192 (16x $12). You will win $190 (10x$19) so your loss here is $2n (192-190). Loss (2) divided by investment (192) now plummets down to 1.042!

Ways to win place bet 8

    = 5

Ways to win place bet 6

    = 5

    Total ways to win

    = 10

    Ways to lose (seven)

    = 6

    Total number of events

    = 16

    Investment (16 x $12)

    = 192

    Return (10 x $19)

    = 190

    Casino’s win

    = 2

    Casino’s percentage

    = 1.0417%

Placing the six and eight is clearly a more advantageous bet than just placing the six or eight. In fact, the edge for the six or eight is 1.51%. If you figure out these percentages, you'll see that placing both numbers is 45% more profitable than placing either number!
Placing the six and eight (1.04% edge) is also a better bet than the pass line (1.4% edge). Just remember to wager in units of $6 and take both bets down after either number hits. Then, wait until the next seven-out before you make another bet.

#31 - You can WIN by using a rotating field progression!

You can play the field using a rotating progression, without betting on any other numbers. For this to work, you must bet on every roll, so have your bets "on" at all times. Increase your bet by one unit on every loss and decrease it by one unit on every win. You should stop when you are four units ahead.

    # 32 - You can WIN without using a field progression!

You can also play the field using the same flat bet each time. Just wait for two non-field numbers in a row and start betting. Stop when you're three units ahead. Even if you stay at the $5 level you can make a nice profit, especially if several twos or twelves roll.

    LETTER OF THE WEEK

      Dear Larry,
I had a real good win and wanted to do something special for my favorite dealer. I asked the guy next to me and he said to do a two-way! Well, I'm not that kind of girl! But isn't there some way of tipping the dealer?
    Coyish in Kokomo

    Dear Coyish,
A Two-Way bet is a tip. Actually it's one for you and one for the dealer. So if you bet $2 two-way hard four, for example, you are betting $1 hard four for you and $1 hard four for the dealer. This way he can share in your bet - if nothing else!
    Good luck,
    Larry

    WEEKLY WORDS OF WISDOM

Finally, when you type www think of the SHOOTERS Weekly Words of Wisdom!

You can play a field progression -
If you're losing, you can press!
But when a field number hits,
You’ll win, and then, bet less!
