| Mercury went into retrograde on February 14 and will return to normal (or "turns direct", as they say in the trade) on March 7. For those unfamiliar with the term, "retrograde" means that a planet appears to be moving backwards in relation to the orbit of other planets in the solar system. Retrograde periods indicate a time for reflection, completing tasks and projects to make way for something new, and planning, and are generally held to be bad times for initiating new projects. Communications and electronic glitches seem to be everywhere during a Mercury retrograde as well. This year, all three of Mercury's retrograde periods occur when the planet is
passing through the Air and Water signs of the Zodiac. This means that our emotional and spiritual states (ruled by Water), and changes in attitude (ruled by Air) are the focus. In This Issue: 1. | Trade Fair and New Arrivals |
| We spent three very interesting days at a trade fair the first weekend in February. There were many enticing items on offer, both from existing suppliers, and from new ones. We restocked some items, expanded existing ranges, and ordered items for
entirely new lines. Below we describe the new items we have already received. We're getting deliveries almost daily, so keep checking back! Jewelry - Amy Brown jewelry is always popular. However she is currently in a dispute over the rights to her designs. As a result no store can get new Amy Brown jewelry. The items we have in stock will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. Once those are gone, we will not be able to get any more until the dispute is resolved. In the meantime, we have added several new types of jewelry designs. We now have Native American, Knights Templar, and Amy Zerner jewelry, as well as more traditional (for us) styles. Figurines - While
Amy Brown jewelry is temporarily unavailable, we now have an assortment of Amy Brown fairy and mermaid figurines. We also have some Nene Thomas figures, including dragons and a fairy Bride and Groom with black wings--perfect decor for a handfasting! Books - We have added a new category in our Books section: Children’s Books. We brought back some titles from Illumination Arts with great stories. Many of them are illustrated by Jody Bergsma, who illustrated the beautiful Spirit of the Wheel Meditation deck, based on the Native American Medicine Wheel. One of Amalthea’s personal favorites is Little Ruth Reddingford, a retelling of “Little Red Riding Hood” where the Wolf is a good guy (don‘t worry, so is Red)! We have more
books in other categories on order that will be arriving in the coming weeks. Music - The Trade Fair featured live perfomances from various musical artists. While we were there we listened to one great new (to us) musician whom we really enjoyed: Scott Helland. We brought four of his CDs back with us, in a range of styles: traditional celtic, celtic rock, and "Space Age." Come in and listen. See which one you like best. Other New Arrivals - For those who asked for rain sticks or marakas, we now have those in stock. We also have in some new Feng Shui items, greetings cards, wands, and carved stones. Oh, and as I type this, we're about to
check in some new statuary from Dryad Designs!
| Sodas and Soda Parties
| Create your own sodas. We are now selling kits to make sodas at home. We have a range of flavours. You can make them regular, diet, or less sweet. If you want a different type of party, we will host a soda party for you in your home. We will supply everything for four gallons of the soda of your choice, except water, and provide about half an hour’s entertainment as we guide you through making the soda. No travel charges within 15 miles of the store. Come in or call to make an appointment. | |

Opinion: End Daylight Savings Now |
| In winter I get up at night And dress by yellow candle-light. In summer, quite the other way, I have to go to bed by day. - Robert Louis Stevenson, A Child’s Garden of Verses Incredible as it seems, by the time we send out our next newsletter, Daylight Savings Time will have started. Congress passed a law causing Daylight
Savings to start on March 11 this year. Nor will it end until November. The rationale for this is that “It will give us an extra hour of daylight.” We know Members of Congress consider themselves all-powerful, but we did not realise they believed they could control the Sun God. Simply by extending Daylight Savings, they are making the sun stay over our horizon for an extra hour each day. Of course this will not “give us an extra hour of daylight.” Nor is it likely that the claimed energy savings are any more real than any other Government forecasts. What this will do is take away an hour of daylight from the morning, and add it to the evening. Here, on the new start date for Daylight Savings, it will actually get light later than it did on the shortest day! We will have to “get up at night and
dress by yellow candlelight” longer than before. We see no reason to mandate this. With so many employers offering flexible hours, anyone who wants to start work earlier can usually do so. When Terry was growing up in England, there was a difference of something like 12 hours in the length of the day between the shortest and longest day. In winter it would get light about 9:30 a.m., and become dark by 4 p.m. In summer it was “quite the other way” indeed. It would get light about 3:30 a.m. (Terry was never awake at the actual time to check.) With the long twilight summer evenings, it was never certain just when it got dark. However, when the pubs chucked out at 10:30 p.m., it was still light enough to read outside. This is never the case for most of the United States. Certainly
here in Florida there is only a difference of less than four hours in the length of the days. We believe Florida should withdraw from Daylight Savings. The part in the Eastern Time Zone should always stay on Standard Time. If the western part, in Central Time, still wished to go on Daylight Savings, then the whole of Florida would be on the same time. Otherwise all Florida could stay on Standard Time the whole year. We think ending Daylight Savings makes sense. We welcome your opinions. Let us know what you think by emailing us at magickalystics@mindspring.com, and we will print a selection of comments in our next newsletter.
