At Magickalystics, we're more than ready for spring and hope you are too!  Mercury has got itself back on track again, so now it's time for us to move forward, too!  Here we go...

The Wolves Are in the Store!

We felt it cruel to leave the wolves at the door, so we invited them into the shop. They are now on top of one of our bookcases, howling at a star lantern. We have added furry animals to our range.  We would have liked to offer ones made with fur substitute, but could not find a suitable manufacturer.  The ones we have are made with goat or rabbit fur. We have a variety of animals: cute, realistic, mystical, and mythical. Come and see if any call to you to adopt them.

Other New Arrivals -   We've just stocked our shelves with yet more books as we received two shipments of new and restocked titles!

Calling All Goths - Great Discount!

We have found a supplier of Gothic items. They have some very interesting items: Sacred Heart Pendants, Romanticide Razor items, chokers in many different designs, bats, skulls, snakes, Wyverex Dragons, chalices, glass and candle holders, tankards, purses, handbags, backpacks, cutlery, and chess sets, to name only a few. We are currently reviewing their offerings to decide what to order. If these items interest you, please stop in, look at the catalog, and tell us what you want. Web customers, please email us about any items in which you are interested, and we can email you pictures and prices. If you place a pre-paid order for any items totaling at least $50, we will give you a 10% discount on top of the discounts listed later in this newsletter. Offer expires 4/15/07. This is an excellent opportunity! These items are of the highest quality, and priced accordingly. Now you have the chance to own the best at a 30% discount.

Ostara

In pre-Christian Germany, the arrival of spring each year was greeted with a major festival, called Eostre (or Ostara), after the Teutonic Goddess of the Dawn. Wonderful meals were prepared that included lamb, rabbit, sweet treats, and--of course--eggs. Some were boiled, dyed through to the “whites” and then baked (whole, minus the shell) into delicious bread braids. Often hollow egg shells were brightly painted and hung from trees or in houses as decorations. Children put out “nests” for the Eostre Hare to leave decorated boiled eggs in. They took the eggs out to the hillsides, where they tossed them up in the air. The longer it took to break the shell, the better that season’s harvest would be.

For those a little older, this was a time of courtship and the beginnings of love as the reborn God and Goddess were once again reunited after the harsh winter. Girls wore their best dresses and decorated their hair with flowers while boys engaged in contests to impress them. Large wooden “sun wheels” were built and burned at night on the hilltops, an invitation to the Sun Goddess to return and shine down Her light, warmth, and blessings on the land. Some Germanic communities in the new world still light bonfires during Easter.

While the precise timing of the original festival is not certain, it is believed by most scholars to have been celebrated in early April. Today, Wiccans, Asatru, and other pagan faiths celebrate Ostara at the Vernal (Spring) Equinox, which this year falls on March 21. The Vernal and Autumn Equinoxes mark those days when the light and dark are of equal duration in a 24-hour period.

Have a happy and blessed Ostara.

Easter

To get tribes to accept Christianity, the early church kept existing celebrations of that tribe, but gave them a Christian meaning. As a result, many Christian celebrations take place at times of the year other than when they probably happened. Easter is different. Easter commemorates the death of Jesus and his resurrection. This is the core of Christianity. Christians believe that Jesus was the Son of God, that he died as a man, and then conquered death by rising bodily from the dead. This is both the most joyous of all Christian celebrations, since it signifies victory over death, as well as a time of renewal and regrowth. It therefore was a natural to be celebrated in springtime, linked to the Ostara celebrations. Yet this is also the actual time of year. Christ’s crucifixion took place at the time of the Jewish Passover. If we knew for certain which year it occurred, the date could be fixed with great accuracy. As it is, it is known that it took place in the spring. Eastern Orthodox churches require Easter to be in April, but Western churches allow it to take place from mid-March to mid-April. This year it is on April 8, and thus is the same date for both churches. Happy Easter.

May the peace of the risen Christ be with you.

Classes and Workshops

Several people have asked us about classes or workshops. We are thinking about what to hold. Please let us know if there are any classes you would like to attend. Possibilities include information about Wicca, astrology, auras, and crystals. Classes would probably be held 7:30 - 9 p.m. on weekends. Cost would likely be about $10 a class, but the actual cost would depend on cost of materials.
