Welcome to the April edition of Magickalystics Newsletter. Our store is now fully operating, with an expanding inventory, and an ever-increasing number of satisfied customers. If you have not visited us recently, please do so. You may be surprised at how much has been added since your last visit. We try to find new items that will appeal to our customers. As well as completely new lines, we have added additional titles to our range of books, and new varieties of herbs are now available. Since you asked to be on our newsletter list, you found something you liked when you saw us before. There is bound to be even more you will like now. Furthermore, we try to keep our prices at a reasonable level: enough for us to stay in business, but low enough so our customers can continue to find value for your money. If nothing else, it is worth buying something just to see us do the “Cash Drawer Dance”, as we try to leap nimbly aside from the path of the spring-loaded cash draw as it shoots open when we click the Total And Print button.

New Arrivals

Etched Crystals -   We now have in stock etched crystals. These are blocks of transparent lead crystal, about 1 - 3 inches a side. Lasers are used to etch 3D pictures in the centres of the blocks. Each crystal comes with a hard-case, lined box, suitable for gift-giving. We have a range of designs. We have whimsical ones, such as a cat helping a mouse to get airborne; mythical ones such as fairies and plants, or dragons, including one guarding the eggs in its nest; magickal ones such as a wizard; symbolic ones such as Celtic crosses; and also other designs. Some of these we have put on stands that shoot different coloured lights through the crystals, highlighting the designs. So you can see these properly, we will be glad to turn out the store lights for you, if this will not inconvenience other customers.

Other New Arrivals -   We have added eight new selections to our expanding bulk herbs section, including patchouli, scullcap, and orris root powder.  All our bulk herbs are available by the ounce, so you get only the amount you need!

Symbol of Satan?

We were recently talking with a woman who had run a New Age store. She told us about a woman who saw an item in her store with the Ohm symbol on it. The customer got quite upset, claiming it was a Symbol of Satan. When the store owner tried to explain that the Ohm was a very ancient symbol that pre-dated Christianity, the customer said, “It’s not in the Bible, so it is a Symbol of Satan.”

There is one very common symbol that is not in the Bible, and which Christian purists have long believed is indeed a Symbol of Satan. In 1603, Elizabeth I, Queen of England, died. Her successor was James VI, King of Scotland. As he made his way from Edinburgh to London to take up his new position, he was met on his way by many people wanting to influence the new government. Among these were some Puritans, who wanted James to abolish bishops, which are mentioned in the Bible, and this symbol, which is not. James refused. His attitude towards the Puritans caused them to move to the New World where they could enforce their own narrow theocracy. Recently, a former Archbishop of Canterbury used this symbol as an example of the differences between his church and Puritans. He said that so long as something is not banned by the Bible, and is harmless, then his church has no objections to its use. Puritans, on the other hand, take the view that unless something is specifically mentioned in the Bible, then it can not be allowed.

This Symbol continued in use, across the world and throughout the centuries. Leaders of Jewish kibbutzim in Israel tried to ban its use, but people insisted on using it. Both of us wear it proudly and openly, every day. What is this “Symbol of Satan” that is displayed so much, but which Puritans hate so passionately?

The wedding ring.

Beltane

Celebrated on May 1 - 2, Beltane is the third Greater Sabbat of the Celtic calendar, the Wheel of the Year. Named for the sun god, Bel (also called Belenos), it is also one of the Fire festivals, where the “Bel fires” are lit. It celebrates both the strengthening sun as it moves towards Summer--indeed, Beltane marks the beginning of Summer, as Litha marks Midsummer--and fertility. In the British Isles, farmers walked their livestock through the smoke of the Bel fire to ensure health and fertility. Women and girls jumped the flames to ensure their own offspring would be healthy, strong, and many! (Any farm family will tell you that lots of strong hands and backs are needed to sow, tend, and harvest the crops.) A woman--married or single--might take the man of her choice--who might or might not be her husband--out to the fields to mate. This served as a sort of ritualistic “sowing of the seed“, but might also have allowed married women whose husbands were infertile or impotent the possibility of having a child. In Wales, it is still considered impolite to question the parentage of a child whose birthday indicates s/he was probably conceived during Beltane.

Today, this holiday is a favorite for many Wiccans and other Pagans, and marks the beginning of “festival season“, when Pagans gather at various campgrounds for weekend (or weeklong) gatherings to celebrate, connect, and learn. However, many of the traditions and symbolism of Beltane (now more commonly called “May Day“) are observed by non-pagans, both in the British Isles and North America. The May Pole, which may have been introduced to Britain by the Romans, involves a tall pole topped with a wreath of flowers and festooned with colorful ribbons. Men and women hold the ends of the ribbons, dancing in and out until the ribbons are completely woven around the pole . A May Queen and King are still chosen to re-enact the sacred marriage of the God and Goddess of Nature. The Green Man appears in several guises during Beltane, including the Fool (Trickster) and John Barleycorn, the spirit of the growing grain. The Hobby Horse--a mysterious character whose roots are unknown--is a common sight in England in May Day parades and is most likely the precursor of the Pantomime Horse. Morris Men (and Women) with bells on their legs perform the same ritualized dances with sticks, swords, and even handkerchiefs, as they have for centuries.

Blessed Beltane Everyone!
