For more about that--as well as much less stress-inducing information--keep reading! In This Issue: 1. New Arrivals 2. Carl Jung, Cartomancer? 3. Specials 4. What? Mercury Retrograde, Again? 5. | New Statuary - InSpiriters are a series of Southwestern Native-American style pottery animals representing attitudes we need to cultivate, such as Joy, Healing, and Determination. Brightly coloured, about 6 inches tall, these figurines decorate the room as well as provide a focus for channeling our feelings. Brooms and Cauldrons - In preparation
for Hallowe’en, we have extended our range of brooms and cauldrons. As requested by customers, we now have adult size besoms, as well as the smaller ones for children or altar. These are decorative or functional. Our new stock of cauldrons includes a wider range of sizes and decorations. We now have cauldrons and cast iron tea kettles with pentacle and triskele decorations. In addition, we have a new type of cast iron cauldron called a "Mayan Moon Pot" that includes a lid with a closable vent hole plus a small, removable grill that can be used to warm a cup of cider over a candle or can or sterno, or to hold dhoop (stick-less) incense. Robes and Cloaks - We want to offer clothing
suitable for a range of activities. We now have summer weight cloaks. They are lined, but in a lighter fabric than our previous ones. We will gladly custom make cloaks, robes, or Ren Fest outfits to order, for the same price as the ones on our racks. If there is a special outfit you want, please let us know and we will be glad to arrange to make it for you. Mystic Eye - We have found a new divination board. Similar to a ouija board, but with a pendulum instead of a planchette. We have one on display for you to try. Come in and ask it a question, and see what answer it will give you.
Carl Jung, Cartomancer? | Many people recognize the name Carl Jung as that of an early pioneer in psychology and some of the terms he coined—synchronicity, archetypes, and the collective unconsciousness—have long since become common parlance. However, did you know that Jung himself was familiar with the tarot and used it and other divinatory techniques to illustrate his theories? Although there is very little
in Jung’s published writings about the tarot specifically, the following quote appears in his work, The Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious: “If one wants to form a picture of the symbolic process, the series of pictures found in alchemy are good examples, though the symbols they contain are for the most part traditional despite their obscure origin and significance. An excellent Eastern example is the Tantric chakra system, or the mystical nerve system of Chinese yoga. It also seems as if the set of pictures in the Tarot cards were distantly descended from the archetypes of transformation,
a view that has been confirmed for me in a very enlightening lecture by professor Bernoulli. The symbolic process is an experience in images and of images. Its development usually shows an enantiodromian structure like the text of the I Ching, and so presents a rhythm of negative and positive, loss and gain, dark and light.” (Emphasis mine)
Later adherents of Jung’s theories (“Jungians”) expanded on his original ideas about the tarot, astrology, and other divinatory tools, and today many more books can be found on the topic. It is not known
for certain which tarot deck Jung may have referenced in his studies, but based on the limited information available, it is believed he used either the Tarot de Marseilles or the Rider-Waite deck. So if you were wondering what a Carl Jung action figure is doing in a metaphysical shop, now you know! (We also carry a wide assortment of tarot cards as well, including the Tarot de Marseilles.)
| What? Mercury Retrograde, Again? |
| Mercury officially turns Retrograde at Midnight (EDT), October 12, 2007 and will remain that way till November 1, when it goes direct. Many of you who aren't astrologically "literate" may already be familar with this much dreaded quarterly event: expect the cable to go out, lots of missed phone calls (or even downed phone lines), loss of computer data (backup EVERYTHING!), jammed copiers or printers, missed appointments, and other similar headaches. However, did you also know about Mercury's "shadow period?" Shadow periods refer to the weeks preceding and following a planet's retrograde cycle, when its influence is most
pronounced. The Shadow period starts prior to the retrograde, when the planet is in the same position where it will be when it goes direct. It ends when the planet returns to the position it was in when it went retrograde. Mercury's Shadow for the upcoming retrograde period starts on September 22 and ends November 17, 2007. While that may seem like a long time, the level of intensity of Mercury's effect will vary, gradually increasing till it reaches its highest intensity during the retrograde, then diminishing as it starts the transition towards direct orbit again. Libra and Scorpio natives willl be especially affected by this particular shadow/retrograde period, since
it not only occurs while the Sun is in both these signs, the retrograde also begins with Mercury in Scorpio and ends with Mercury in Libra (which means the shadow period thus begins with Mercury in Libra and ends with Mercury in Scorpio).
