| The Wheel turns and the weather also turns... colder! Even here in Florida we occassionally need to jack up the heat! We're not the only ones who prefer it warm, either. This past week we discovered we had a new store mascot: a little brown lizard (about finger-length) has come to stay with us. He (or she; it won't let us get close enough to check) greets customers at the door when he's feeling particularly brave! We don't know if it is getting enough food here in the store and Laura has hopes of catching it and letting it outside now that it's warming up again, but our tiny Florida dragons are rather quick on their feet. In This Issue: 1. New Arrivals 2. Yule 3. Specials 4. Holiday Operating Hours 5. Directions and Hours 6. Next Issue 7. Information and Credits

Yule | Some 5000 years ago, maybe longer, a series of complex barrows were created at what is now called New Grange, Ireland, to house the bones of the dead. The entrance to the burial chamber of these barrows was reached after an abrupt turn in the passage leading down to them. This passage was positioned specifically to direct the first rays of the Winter Solstice sun into the chamber, flooding it with light for that one day each year. Although most of the Yule (and Christmas) traditions we are familiar with today originated in pre-Christian Germany and Scandinavia, the ancient
Celts also recognized the Winter Solstice. They celebrated this time when the light makes its return to conquer the long darkness of winter. Life, having laid dormant beneath the snows and the interminable night, begins to stir again. However, the “victory” wasn’t always a sure bet as far as the Celts were concerned and special rituals were sometimes deemed necessary to tip the scales in their favor. Families and friends gathered for comfort as well as companionship during this uncertain time. As Christianity found its way to the British Isles, the early church leaders, who often kept themselves apart from the villagers outside of services and festivals, would join them. Wiccans and other modern Pagans celebrate
Yule both with festive parties and with quiet night vigils ending in sunrise rituals to welcome back the newly reborn Sun. Traditionally, all candles that have been used for rituals and workings during the year are burned down through the night. These will be replaced with new ones at Imbolc (Candlemas). Merry Yule, everyone! | |
