Subject: Our Feelings of being Powerless and Expensive Buying

News - Information - Resources and more...

(This Issue Main Presentation)

THE INTRODUCTION: Not all of us have the money and attitude to spend when we are in a state of feeling powerless. After all, having money and the urge to spend it, is a form of power at work. And that is not being powerless. But there is another side to this dilemma. Please see what the researchers have to say below.

QUOTE: The High Cost Of Low Status: Feeling Powerless Leads To Expensive Purchases.  In a study that may explain why so many Americans who are deeply in debt still spend beyond their means, authors Derek D. Rucker and Adam D. Galinsky (both Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University) found that research subjects who were asked to recall times when someone else had power over them were willing to pay higher prices for status-symbol items.

"This increased willingness to pay for status-related objects stems from the belief that obtaining such objects will indeed restore a lost sense of power," write the authors.

In three experiments, the authors asked participants to either describe a situation where they had power over another person or one in which someone had power over them.

“Unfair bank practices threaten to shred the safety net of Social Security for older Americans”

As AARP reports this week that bankruptcy among older Americans has doubled since 1991, and as banks raise their overdraft fees and make it easier to hit their account holders with multiple charges, we release findings on how unauthorized overdrafts strip fees from Americans 55 and older at the level of $4.5 billion per year. Nearly $1 billion of that comes from people who are heavily dependent on Social Security income.

CRL’s June 18, 2008 report also finds that debit cards are the most frequent trigger for overdrafts even for people 55 and older – these debit card overdrafts are both extremely costly and easy to prevent if the banks were interested in discouraging them.

Some of us are very realistic and know that not all people believe in religion and the Christian religion in particular. Many do not like the “religious belief” about heaven and hell after their present life has past. But for those who believe, it is a great comfort for their souls, minds and emotions.

Now according to a recent report, there are a growing number of people in the USA who are making the distinction between heaven and hell – choosing which they like more and believe in.
