International Students Club Newsletter
October/November 2005

ISC wants to welcome all internationals to the ASU campus and to the Phoenix area.  We welcome you to participate in any or all of our
activities!

The ISC table will be on the Cady Mall, outside Memorial Union, from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM, Monday through Friday (except holidays).  Come by if you need help of any kind.  This is also a place to get information, practice speaking English, get acquainted with others, and to sign-up for ISC activities.

ACTIVITIES

Cookout and Recreation
Saturday, October 1
Daley Park, Tempe
Meet at the park at 4:30 PM or come to the Muse parking lot (corner of Orange St and Terrace Rd) at 4:30 PM for transportation.  The park is very close to ASU---south on College Avenue,  just past the railroad tracks.  We will have lots of good food (including something for vegetarians), and lots of fun recreation including softball, volleyball, soccer, and possibly horseshoes and badminton.  Phil and Joanne Brown's home is right next to the park, and they have a pool, so you could also do some swimming!  _*Cost:  $5*_.  Please sign up at the ISC table so we know how much food to prepare.

Colors Hike in Oak Creek Canyon
Saturday, October 15
Hike with us in this beautiful canyon just north of Sedona.  We will enjoy the trees turning autumn colors as we walk an easy trail up the canyon along a mountain stream.  We will leave from the Muse parking lot (corner of Orange St and Terrace Rd)  at 8:30 AM.  _*COST:  $8*_ for transportation and parking.  Bring your lunch or money to buy fast food in Sedona.  Wear good hiking shoes and bring a light jacket or sweater.  It is good to bring water as well.  The weather will be much cooler than Tempe.  Most of us will return home  for dinner, though some may choose to eat dinner in Sedona on the way home.  Please sign-up at the ISC table so we can know how much transportation will be needed.

House Painting

Saturday, October 22
Phil and Joanne Brown, who have hosted the summer Bible study and several activities at their home, need help to paint their house.  This is the day!   If you are willing and able, please let them know you can help.  Call them at 480-557-9704.  You could come for just part of the day, you don't have to stay all day.  Whatever time you have they would really appreciate!  They will provide the paint and brushes.

Square Dance and BBQ
Saturday, October 29
Square Dancing is an American western group folk dance---LOTS OF FUN!!  We will all learn together with the help of professional instructors.  If you have western clothing (blue jeans, cowboy boots or hat), please wear them!  _*Cost:  $10*_, which includes the instructors' fees and the BBQ dinner.  We will have some vegetarian food as well.  We will leave from the Muse parking lot at 5:30 PM and be back about 10:30.  You may also want to bring a light jacket.  Please sign-up at the ISC table so we know how much food to prepare.

Trip to the Grand Canyon
Saturday and Sunday, November 12 and 13

Join us as we tour one of the wonders of the world!  Friday, November 11 is a holiday, so there will be no classes.  Study that day so you can go with us on this two-day trip.  _*Cost:  $80*_ which includes transportation on a very comfortable bus, entrance to the Grand Canyon, IMAX movie, motel (3 people in a room with 2 beds) and continental breakfast (pastries, doughnuts, oatmeal, yogurt, juice & coffee).  You will need money for other meals.  If you want to reserve a room for only two people, the trip cost will be $90 per person.  If you want your own private room, the cost will be $115 (reserve in advance).  There will be time to hike part-way down the canyon if you want to do so.  To reserve your place for this trip you must sign up at the ISC table and pay a $20 deposit.  This deposit will be NON-REFUNDABLE if you cancel less than a week before the trip.  The weather will be cold (with the possibility of snow!), so bring a warm jacket, and gloves and hat if possible.  We will  leave the Muse parking lot at 9 AM on Saturday, Nov. 12 and return to ASU about 10 PM on Sunday.  One other option some people like is a 30 minute helicopter ride over the canyon which costs $100 per person.  You can decide on that when we get there.
