It rapidly became obvious this year that the very backbone of our 21st
century society is being disgracefully managed and in many cases beginning
to crumble.? I am not talking oil or share markets but electricity, the
only single invention from which every other piece of technology that
we depend on has its roots.? Take away this network and we are literally
plunged back into the dark ages.? You should be concerned to learn that
governments are gambling with this grid for profit, and they have slaughtered
it to the point of degradation that we are now experiencing and paying
for from our wallets and quality of life.

Sun
'Mega-Flare' Was Largest On Record
The
massive solar flare that erupted from the sun this week has been classified
as the largest in three decades of monitoring, the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration's Space Environment Center said Thursday.
The previous record holder
occurred on April 2, 2001. An active region of sunspots on the solar face
has spawned a number of powerful flares over the last two weeks, including
the most powerful one on Tuesday and third largest salvo on record on
October 28.
"Just as solar scientists
were ready to start breathing normally again, active region 10486 blasted
off yet another mega-flare," Paal Brekke of the European Space Agency
said of the November 4th flare. ? "This
one saturated the X-ray detectors on the NOAA's GOES satellites that monitor
the sun."

It's
Official, That Was an X28 Flare
It has just been announced
that the massive solar X-ray flare which occurred on 4 November was, at
best estimate, an X28. There is still a small chance this will be revised
by a small amount, but it is now official: We have a new number 1 X-ray
flare for the record books, the most powerful in recorded observational
history.
On Tuesday, 4 November
2003, this flare saturated the X-ray detectors on several monitoring satellites.
The associated coronal mass ejection (CME) came out of the Sun's surface
at about 2300 kilometres per second (8.2 million km/h). Only part of the
CME is directed towards Earth, so we expect the Earth will receive only
a glancing blow, since the source region is pointing away from us on the
right on the limb of the Sun as seen from Earth.

The Moon: America's
Renewed Focus In Space Exploration
Testimony of Dr. Paul

Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee hearing on "Lunar
Exploration"

Mr. Chairman and members
of the committee, thank you for inviting me here today to testify on the
subject of lunar exploration and the US space program.
I want to discuss a new
destination for America in space - the Moon. Although we conducted our
initial visits to that body over 30 years ago, we have recently made several
important discoveries that indicate a return to the Moon offers many advantages
and benefits to the nation. In addition to being a scientifically
rich object for study, the Moon offers abundant material and energy resources,
the feedstock of an industrial space infrastructure. Once established,
such an infrastructure will revolutionize space travel, assuring us of
continuous, routine access to cislunar space (i.e., the space between
and around Earth and Moon) and beyond. The value of the Moon as a space
destination has not escaped the notice of other countries - at least
four new robotic missions are currently being flown or prepared by Europe,
India, Japan, and China and advanced planning for human missions in many
of these countries is already underway.
Editor's Note: So why is the congress talking about going back to the
moon given the deficit and an increasingly expensive war?
