Chapter 1: Dependence and Vulnerability
YOWBOOKS.COM, 05-January-2004
A Serialized Book by Jacco van der Worp
We
have as a society become almost completely dependent on our ever-increasing
need for energy. When looking at the monitor while writing this
you would almost take for granted that it shows the fruit of the typing,
but that takes energy. The lamp that is on to read the notes on the
side, lights because it gets power from a wall outlet. The cold
beer before calling it a night is being cooled in the refrigerator right
now that, to no surprise, runs on electrical power. The phone that
rang just now, the MP3 thats playing on the side, the radio, the
TV, the microwave, all of them need electrical energy and most of them
are common ground in almost every household in the Western world.
Just how bad has it become? Without a continuous flow of electricity
coming into our houses, our lives will come to a grinding halt; that is
how bad it has become.

As global relief efforts were still focused on the devastating 6.6 earthquake
that struck Iran last week, killing more than 30,000 and leaving some
40,000 homeless, seismologists were studying a new rash of temblors striking
the planet's "ring of fire."
In Indonesia, a powerful earthquake shook the tourist islands of Bali
and Lombok yesterday, injuring nearly 30 people and damaging dozens of
buildings. On Lombok, 22 people were injured and one elderly man died,
apparently of shock as a result of the quake, which the Meteorology and
Geophysics Agency said measured 6.1 on the Richter scale. The undersea
quake struck shortly before dawn in the Straits of Lombok.

WASHINGTON -- The earthquake that killed more than 50,000 people in Iran
was part of a normal pattern that included quakes in California, New Caledonia,
Panama, Mexico and Indonesia in the last two weeks, the U.S. Geological
Survey said on Friday.
"We are in the norm of earthquake activity," seismologist Jim
Devine said in a telephone interview from the U.S. agency that monitors
earthquakes. "We would need several more large earthquakes before
we start considering something unusual."
Asked whether any of these quakes were related, Devine replied, "The
short answer is, no they're not. The long answer is, of course the entire
Earth is always in some state of energy release. There are periods when
there is more energy release than other times."
The Earth is made up of almost a dozen plates that can collide and release
energy, that energy release is what creates the earthquake, Devine said.
But he stressed that a quake on one side of the Earth does not trigger
one on the other side.
"Ninety-five percent of the time they appear to be quite random,"
Devine said. "I haven't seen anything in this current pattern that
would indicate that it's out of the ordinary."
