Today's Message:
"Hope is a rock"
by Bob Perks
"Every time I walk out that door I see hope." I told
my friend.
"Well, you should. That's what you do! I mean
isn't that your job?" he replied.
I stopped and thought about what he said. Can you
imagine for a moment that your job was to see hope?
Think about
doing that for a living. Oh, yes, I suppose you can
say that's
what clergy do. But shouldn't we all?
"What do you do for a living? I look for hope," I
said jokingly.
He smiled and said, "Am I wrong?"
"Now, wait a minute. It is my job to write and speak
about hope. I do cover
despair and hopelessness, too. I tell my own
personal stories of loss and
grief as well as failure."
"Yes, but you use those stories to reach people. You
talk about all of that
but end up giving them hope."
"I try, but that's not even where I was going with all of
this," I said.
Now, standing before him waving my hands as if I were
painting a picture,
I said, "When I walk out my
back door I really do see hope. There is a small
rock on the edge of the deck near
the pond. We bought it a few years a go
because the word "Hope" was carved
into it. Over the last few years it began to fade.
So, Marianne painted the rock black and the word hope in
white. In contrast to
all the others the rock really stands out
now."
"So, literally when you walk out the door you see
hope."
"Yes."
Quietly looking at each other for a moment, I smiled and
said,
"I guess you can say, I see hope. It is my rock and
the beginning
of the foundation of each new day."
It's true. I can't head into my day without seeing
hope. It catches my eye,
brings the word, the idea, the feeling of hope immediately
into my thinking.
Are there days when I try to ignore it? Yes!
Why? Because I am choosing
to be hopeless. I am consciously deciding right then
and there that hope has
no place in my day, that day.
Don't we do that all the time?
We choose not to be happy.
We choose not to be loving or even loved.
We choose to fall into failure simply by not choosing to
try at all.
We choose to hate instead of learning to
understand.
We choose to fight instead of choosing to
compromise.
We choose to put down instead of lifting up.
I found out that no matter what I choose to see each
morning when
I walk out that door, I always see hope. It is my rock and the beginning
of the foundation of each new
day." Why not find a rock, paint "Hope" on it and put it
somewhere you'll see it
every morning.
If you can see "Hope" in the beginning of each day, you
will see hope in
all things.

I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive. I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish you enough "Hello's" to get you through the final "Goodbye." |
