Today's Message:
"Is your refrigerator
running?"
By Bob Perks
She is a joy immeasurable and a gift only a miracle could
bring.
My daughter-in-law, Sarah, is so full of life. The
day after she married my
son Keith, she called my house. All I heard was "Hi,
Dad!" and I began to weep.
I had always wanted a daughter and was blessed with two of
the greatest sons.
Her sweet voice melts my heart. Her sometimes silly
ways and her joy-filled laughter
make me smile even on days when smiling wasn't in the
plans.
"Is your refrigerator running?" I asked when I called
yesterday.
"Yes, it is," she replied innocently.
"Well, you better go catch it!" I said.
There was a pause and suddenly she broke into this deep,
very real laugh.
"That's an old joke," I said.
"Well, I never heard it!" she replied and continued
laughing.
Their refrigerator broke down the other day. They
just returned from
vacation, spending all their
hard earned money along the shores
of South Carolina. This expense would hit hard
so my wife sent me
over with a few dollars to help out.
They finally delivered the new one and I just wanted to
make sure
they were happy with it.
"I realize having to buy a new refrigerator isn't the most
exciting
thing in the world," I said.
"No it isn't. I didn't like shopping for one.
But it's something we
needed to do," she said.
Then it came to me. One of those thoughts I have
about seemingly
unimportant things in life.
"Do you realize that is the first big purchase for a
new home you'll have one
day," I said to her.
"I guess," she said.
"No, really. Think about how significant this
is. You can't see it now. I mean
everyone has one, but this one is a part of your
future. One day little hands
will be reaching to grasp onto those door handles.
Your children will stand in front
of it and their little fingers will go searching for all
those special things you'll keep
for them inside," I said.
I hesitated for a moment. Their plans for children
have been put on hold for now.
It's not that they don't want them, it's just that those
little miracles and the procedure
they need costs far more than new
refrigerators. Sometimes God's miracles costs
big bucks.
"Let's also think about the holidays where that new fridge
will certainly be filled
to the max with all your favorite things. Birthday
cakes, ice cream, leftover
Thanksgiving turkey, and all the trimmings. Ice cold
pops for terribly hot summer days
and milk for those hot chocolate chip cookies you love so
much, just to name a few."
By now I think she was sorry she answered the
phone.
"Wait a minute. Did you put all the pictures
back up?" I asked.
"Yes, I did. In fact, we need new ones of you and
Marianne."
"I don't want to spoil your appetite every time you go to
get something to eat!" I said.
Of course she laughed again. My heart
smiled.
"Look how important that new appliance really is!" I
said.
"Okay, I get it. You should write a story about it,"
she said.
Every little thing plays a big part in life.

I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive. I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish you enough "Hello's" to get you through the final "Goodbye." |
