Today's Message:
"Fall...in Love!"
by Bob Perks
They say the best thing you can do is to face a challenge
head on.
Decide what it is that bothers you, impacts you, limits
you, and then
do something about it.
Change it.
That's it, I'll change it.
The leaves have begun falling in my back yard. These
golden yellow flakes of
summer time shade, pile up quickly.
It is that time of year to remember. Remember
the warmth of summer and
the joy of living in the sun and shade when
necessary.
It was early yesterday morning when I got up before my
wife. The dogs always
wait until the first movement in our bed. I
often lie there fighting the urge to stretch
out because I know Ricky will see me and think it's time
to get up. Lucy follows
quickly behind.
But I needed to get up early today. Marianne needed
to sleep in a bit longer.
It is our regular routine to fumble down the steps in the
dark, open the back door
and let the dogs out. Normally I go into the kitchen
and make coffee while
watching them through the small window over the
sink.
I was too tired. I didn't even try to make
coffee. I decided instead to join them.
I walked into the cold morning air, still deep in
darkness, and found myself standing
in my driveway, ankle deep in fresh fallen
leaves.
It was then that a cold chill rushed over me.
I wrote about it two years ago and shared it with you a
few days ago. "The most
difficult thing for me to write about."
The memory of that moment flushed through my mind sending
me deep into a
sadness I knew all too well.
But, it is different this time. It's two years later
and she is free of her cancer, but still
in the battle.
Kicking the leaves around a bit and turning slowly toward
the door, I shook off the feeling
and went on about my day.
Still flashes of that moment stayed with me all
day.
I needed to do something about it.
Mid-morning I headed back out into the yard, grabbed the
lawn mower and began to
mulch the leaves that somehow held fear in my
day.
Enjoying the brisk air and the thought of taking control,
I went about the long task of
clearing the entire yard.
Then suddenly it hit me.
Robert Schuller would say, "Turn your scars into
stars!"
And so I did. A little creativity and a whole
lot of love and I cleared all of the leaves
but for one huge center spot in the upper
yard.
That I cut into the shape of a heart.
I recorded a video message on my phone for my wife to see
when she comes home
tonight.
"Marianne, you won't believe this! I came out to
mulch the leaves and it was a sign from
heaven. All of the leaves from the tree fell to the
ground in the shape of a huge heart! I
see it as a sign from God telling you..."Bob really loves
you!" But I also know that it says
"Don't ever "leaf" me because I have "Fall" in for
you!"
I wish I could share that video with you.
You can see the heart if you go to my Gallery page
http://www.bobperks.com/Gallery Look
under "pictures related to Bob's stories."
It's right there on the first page any way.
Now the rest of the story. Thinking this was a
clever idea, I used my cell phone to take a picture
to share with you. Immediately after that photo,
Ricky and Lucy came by to see what I was doing.
They both walked into the middle of the heart and...well,
you know...relieved
themselves on the leaves.
If I wasn't laughing so hard I would have taken that
picture, too.
Yes, when faced with a challenge take it head on and
change it.
If that doesn't work...have your dogs pee on
it.
"Fall...in Love" this weekend.
