"I Believe in you!" A message of Hope...stories from the road. By Bob Perks ************************************************ Hello, my Friend! You have no idea how much I missed you! I have been trying to send this message for more than a week. My service had tech problems and I could not contact anyone on my list. I sent it four times, three times in one day...nothing. Marianne asked. "Just hanging around," I replied. "Upside down?" "I used to do this when I was a kid." "You're still a kid," she said. "Then this is okay to do," I said. I was lying on my back on the bed with most of the upper part of my body hanging upside down off of the side. I used to love to do this when I was a child. I loved to see the room upside down. I would imagine walking on the ceiling. I'm 56. Why would I still want to do this? It helped me find Hattie's Hatpin. What? My brother subscribes to a really great magazine called "Reminisce, the magazine that brings back the good times." The stories, pictures and feature articles all reflect back to things of the past. When he's finished with an issue, he passes it along to me. Some remembrances are too old for me, some are unfamiliar but, oh the things I do connect with! There's a feature that challenges the reader to find the hidden hatpin. They place it somewhere in the magazine and you try to spot it. It's not easy, but it is good mental exercise. The December issue was driving my wife and I to the edge. "It's not in there," I said. "Maybe they forgot it," she added. "Maybe we just can't find it!" I actually looked through it more than a dozen times. I finally declared "This is the last try!" Then, four more tries later, I came up with a new idea. "I hate when I can't solve something. After looking at this so many times, it all looks the same. Kind of like being in a boring job. Nothing ever changes." I needed to see things differently. I turned the magazine upside down. It was amazing. It seemed like I was looking at every picture for the first time. I was seeing things fresh. I was shocked. In just a few minutes I found it. I told Marianne about it and she insisted on seeing it for herself. Actually she threatened me if I didn't show it to her. Yes, we were both obsessed with finding it. It was later that evening she found me hanging upside down on the bed. So, what's the lesson here? Are you bored with your job, your life, who you are? Find another way to look at it. Two people looking at a painting see it differently. The way you see it, the way they see it and then it's the way it really is. Who is right? Both. Ask someone, a very close friend, to describe how they see your life. Ask them to be honest and then expect some surprises. You might be better off than you think you are. There is an old story of a man dragging a cross through the streets. He moaned and complained about the size, the weight, and how much of a burden it was. A man standing nearby heard his cry. "My friend, let me take that from you. I have a collection of these inside. I'll let you choose another you might see as more fitting your circumstances." The man walked into the room and tried several crosses. One was too long, another too heavy. Still others were made of a different wood, old, splintered and much more a challenge than he thought he had already. Finally, in the corner just inside the door he found the one he wanted. You know where this is going, don't you? That's right. Without realizing it, he chose the one he had before. After trying all of the others, the one he had originally wasn't as bad as he thought. He continued on his journey with less to complain about because he saw his challenge differently. You don't have a perfect life. No one does. You just need "another way to look at it."
