"I Believe in you!"
A message of Hope...stories from the
road.
By Bob Perks
************************************************
Hello, my Friend!
I had set out to raise half of what Keith needed to
try one more time to have a child. ("One day in
April")
The total cost would be around
$9,000.
My goal, $4,500. I offered a copy of my "In this
day" poster for any
gift sent and you responded both in gift and in
prayer.
The total, as of Monday, was $2,079.62 from 42 friends
I've never met.
I humbly thank you, again from my heart. I have sent
out every poster
and responded personally to each of you. If for some
reason you have
not yet received your poster, please let me know. I
sent the last ones today.
I am planning on finalizing my commitment to my son, by
offering myself
for a speaking engagement. I am working on the
details.
I must tell you my daughter-in-law was stunned by your
generosity and heartfelt
comments.
I am forever in debt to you all.
Love, Bob

Today's message:
"The last shall be first!"
By Bob Perks It was to be a fun day. Until now Billy never participated in such an event. He was small for his age and although he was old enough last
year, his parents felt he wasn't
ready. But this year he would take part in the great
"Easter Egg Hunt."
Each year community groups banded together to raise money to buy enough candy for the big event. Small wrapped chocolate eggs were
spread across the field next to
the town hall. Larger chocolate bunnies and special
baskets were on hand for the top
prizes to be given to the lucky children who found the
winning numbers inside their eggs.
Billy's Mom didn't want him to do this. Having grown up in this town, she remembered how frightening it was for her. At the blast of a siren
hundreds of children dash onto
the field. She remembered being knocked down and pushed as
she struggled to
keep up with the others. Now that she was a Mom, she
feared the same thing would
happen to Billy.
But Billy was ready. He had been talking about this for weeks. As they lined up on the edge of the field, Mom stood nearby anxiously waiting
for the whole ordeal to be over.
"Billy, be careful!" she shouted. "Don't get hurt!" The other parents around her smiled and sympathized with her. Just before the siren was to signal the start, quiet fell over the crowd. "Billy, don't get your pants dirty!" Mom yelled. The crowd burst into laughter. Billy held his head down and whispered, "Oh, Mom." They were off and running. Hundreds of kids dashed across the field diving for the eggs. The crowd of onlookers cheered and shouted in
support of their efforts.
Mom darted back and forth along the boundary roped off for spectators. She could see him one minute and then lost him in the crowd.
"There he is!" she yelled. Then suddenly he fell. He stood again trying desperately to continue. One of the children nearby pushed him to the
ground again. But Billy rose to
his feet. Again and again he fell on his face. The bigger
kids mocked him, "Don't get your
pants dirty, Billy!" as they pushed him down.
"Where is he?" she wondered. "Billy, Billy!" she screamed. Then as fast as it started it was over and the children all headed back to the prize area. Mom rushed over to get a glimpse of Billy.
"I hope he's not hurt," she said to herself. Scanning the crowd she could not see him. Now panicking in fear that something awful happened, she ran onto the field in search of Billy.
Looking through the crowd she could
not find him. Then suddenly she turned and there out in
the middle of the field she found
him crying.
She rushed to his side and falling to her knees, she held him in her arms. "That's okay, Billy," she assured him. "I knew I shouldn't have permitted this." Billy looked up at her and said, "Mom, I'm sorry I did get my pants dirty." "Oh, Billy that's okay. I'm just sorry you didn't get any Easter eggs." "But, Mom. I did get one. That's how I got dirty. I couldn't keep up with everyone, but I kept trying. The last time I fell I was about to give up. When
I rolled over, I found this egg
underneath me. I got one Mom, I got one!"
"Good for you, Billy. I'm proud of you. Now let's go home and change," Mom said. "Attention please!" An announcement came over the speaker. "We want to thank everyone for their participation. We have given out all of the prizes except for the top prize. Please check your chocolate
eggs. We are looking for the
number one hundred."
Billy and his Mom were crossing the field when suddenly he stopped. "Mom, wait I didn't look. Maybe I have that number," Billy said. He reached in his pocket and pulled out the egg. It was flattened, broken and covered with dirt.
"Billy just throw that away. I'll buy you another...." "Mom!" Billy shouted. "I have it! Look! This sticker says #100!" The huge crowd was still gathered in the prize area. "Do we have a winner?" the announcer asked. From behind the crowd a little voice was heard. "Yes, I did it! I won!" Everyone looked to see who it was. "Where are you?" the man said. Billy made his way to the front holding his crushed egg high above his head. The man grabbed his hand and lifted him up onto his shoulders. Checking the number he yelled, "We have a winner!"
Billy had fallen down so many times, but there in the end, the littlest one came out on top. The moral to this story? Where you stumble and fall, there lie your treasures. It is in falling down we learn to rise to the challenges in life.

© 2001 Bob Perks I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive. I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish you enough "Hello's" to get you through the final "Goodbye." |
