"Cracked and Chipped"
By Bob Perks

Cracked.  Chipped.

I ran my finger full circle around the edge of the plate.

Smooth on top.  Chipped on the bottom.

Still, when I placed it on the table it looked different than the rest.

It sagged.  It sat lower than the others.

I stacked them all back up again.

No two alike.

I never noticed this before.  Although I purchased these dishes
all in one set, they didn't match.

Oh, the colors...well no, the colors were slightly different, too.
Shades of earthy tones, each blending one into another.  The
outer rim on one plate was lighter than the next.

How could this be?  Did I buy seconds?

I went to the outlet store to find a replacement for the one plate
I recently chipped.  Standing in front of the display which held our
particular style, I noticed the same thing.  One dish had a slightly
higher rim than the next.  The color variation on one was slightly
darker on some.

"Excuse me," I said to the clerk standing nearby.  "Are these all seconds?"

"Oh, no sir.  We don't sell seconds."

"Why are they all different?"

"That's what makes them special.  Each dish is unique.  It gives
that hand made look and feel," she said smiling.

"Then I didn't need to replace my old set?" I asked.

"Oh, I don't know..."

"I bought an entire set of eight so that I would have a beautiful matching set."

"Great!" she replied.

"But none of them match."

"Correct."

"So, I didn't need to replace the old set you see.  I had five of one
kind, four of another, three big dishes and one odd sized one.
By your standards I had a set."

"Well, they weren't our brand.  Our brand is more valuable because
they are different, unique," she said smugly.  "What kind did you have before?"

"E. S. A."

"I never heard of E.S.A"

"Early Salvation Army. They matched my kitchen set by Goodwill.
But they lasted longer than yours."

She huffed and snorted, then walked away.

I stood there looking at the display.

I was paying top dollar for things that were imperfect, because
they were imperfect.

Kids buy jeans that are already torn and faded and pay extra
for them.

You can pay top dollar for baseball caps that are ripped on the
brim and sneakers that are already broken in.

We buy new planters and garden items that already look green
from mold and red from rust.

Two end tables in my living room came with nicks and tiny holes
to make them appear aged.  They cost me more.

We pay extra for natural food because nothing is added. they don't do anything to it
so we pay more for it.

Yet, when it comes to people we find little value in old age.  We go
under the knife to remove wrinkles and pay someone to make our
natural color unnaturally youthful.

We pay top dollar for items that look different, but reject people
because they are.

We will spend extra to buy something that is one of a kind, but find no
value in our own uniqueness.

I come to this computer keyboard everyday bringing with me all my
imperfections.

I am cracked from too much pressure and chipped from mishandling.
I have worn spots on my head and my hair is varied in color.  Stacked up
next to others I sag in the middle and I don't sit well.

So, next time you and I feel worthless, old, worn, cracked and chipped...let's
go to the outlet dish store, we'd be worth a small fortune there.

"I Wish You enough!"

I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough "Hello's" to get you through the final "Goodbye."
