Today's message:
"That Happy"
By Bob Perks
On my way to the hospice office (it takes me an hour each
way) I listen to my favorite music.
I always carry a bunch of cd's but I often get tired of
the same thing over and over. So I find
myself switching radio stations.
In the early morning I listen to Public Radio,
NPR, to catch up on the news I really didn't pay attention
to on the television I was
watching while reading the newspaper I won't remember reading
later.
I'm not a morning person.
Anyway, About half way through my ride, I arrive at the
top of a mountain, not a very high one, but high
enough to cause my radio stations
to fade as I cross over and head down the other side.
After scanning the dial many mornings I discovered one
particular one that stuck with me. From what I
understand it is a nationally broadcast production called
K-LOVE, A positive Christian format that fills
the airwaves with very modern upbeat faith-filled
music. The hosts, Jon &
Sherry Rivers, a husband and wife team,
are so vibrant and cheery I
often times find myself barking back at them..."How can you be that
happy?"
It's early. I haven't had my coffee
yet.
I then listen to this station for the last 30 minutes of
my trip. Of course on my way back I hear the
station again until I hit the top of the mountain and they
begin to fade.
I've been on this roller coaster for about three months
and today it hit me.
After losing the Christian station today I actually shut
off the radio. Quiet screams at me sometimes. Other days
it's just what I need.
This journey is just like my life. I have been faced
with mountains that, at the time, seemed insurmountable.
Lost, out of touch, disconnected and near lifeless, I
still always found my way. Arriving, I looked back and buried
myself in pity, cursing the fact that I had to go through
still another thing, another challenge, and cross over
another mountain of unbearable suffering and
loss.
Every time, as I headed down the other side, the memory of
it all began to fade. The thrill of having made it to the
top and crossing over lifted my
spirits. Then the music of my life changed to the
positive once I realized I had
reached new heights.
The first part of my daily journey is filled
with the news of the world. War, famine, politics
and natural disasters
fill my mind with sadness and anger. Reaching the
top of the mountain causes me to switch over to
positive,
upbeat music of hope and faith.
Everyday of my life I choose the music that sets the pace
for how I see the world. The music of my life includes the
people I surround myself with, the strangers I encounter
and how I choose to react to them, the work I do, the faith I have,
and the attitude I embrace when facing the challenges
I confront daily.
I will face many more mountains in my life. Perhaps
if I begin each of those journeys on the positive side I won't have to wait
to cross over to be "That happy."
Whatever mountains you are facing today will one day fade
away. Beginning today choose the music of your life instead of
walking
to the beat of the world. You too, can be "That
Happy."
"I believe in you!"

"I Wish You enough!"
© 2001 Bob Perks I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive. I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish you enough "Hello's" to get you through the final "Goodbye." |
