Hello, my friend!
There is a midweek lull.?  I like a break like this once in awhile.?  But always anxious to get going again.
It is a busy week ahead though.
I do hope this finds you well and excited about life.
Today's story is just a simple one that will remind you of the innocence of childhood and perhaps put a gentle smile on your face.
Love always and all ways,
Bob and Marianne

Today's Message:
"Peas"
By Bob Perks

I can remember when I was a child that I didn't like mashed potatoes.?  My father would make me
sit at the table until I ate the entire thing.?  I would play with it, mush it around and taste it every
time my father would pass by.?  I finally learned to spread them around my plate until they looked
like I had eaten most of them.

The year before my father passed away, I finally confessed a little secret.?  We had an old marble
box with a lid on it.?  Although it was designed to hold cigarettes, no one smoked in our house.?
When no one was looking I would put my mash potatoes in the box and empty it later.

He laughed about it.?  Had he discovered it back then, I would have been in big trouble!

Oddly, whenever my Aunt Helen and Uncle Al would visit from New Jersey, he would tease me at dinner about eating them.

"Pass the mashed potatoes, but don't let Bobby have them," he'd say.

Of course that made me want them more.?  I had seconds, too.

Now, I absolutely love potatoes.?  Fry them, mash them, smash them, bake them, or anything
else you want and I'll eat them.

So what could possibly bring up that old memory?

Peas.

A friend of mine told me his granddaughter hates peas.?  It seems every time he is over her house for dinner they have peas.?  He finally caught on.?  It appears his daughter was hoping grandpa could get her to like peas.?

"I was successful at it with my daughter," he told me.?  "But this one...this one is a real challenge!"

I shared my mashed potato story with him hoping it would inspire him to give it a try.

"No, I've given up on her," he said.?  Then he started to laugh.?  "She just doesn't like peas and I believe she never will."

The laughing increased to a point where he was almost in tears.

"What happen?" I asked.

"They just got a new puppy over the weekend.?  My granddaughter was stuck with the peas again at dinner.?  I begged her.?  I ate some myself in front of her.?  I did everything I could short of bribing her.?  I walked out of the room to tell my daughter it was useless.?  Agreeing that we should finally tell her she didn't have to eat peas any more, we returned to the kitchen and..." He couldn't finish.?  He started laughing again.

I sat patiently waiting for him to calm down.

"What happened?" I asked.

"We caught her feeding the peas to the puppy.?  He loved them.?  But my daughter was upset with her doing that," he continued.

"She went on about not feeding the? new puppy? "people food" and that because he was a puppy she might make him sick."

Calming down a bit for a moment, he looked at me and said,?  "When we asked her why she did it she simply said,?  "Mommy, it's okay to feed him this.?  These are "Pup Peas!"

RE: "Courage"
Hello Bob,
So many definitions of courage....the obvious ones of physical strength and heroics are easy to recognize.?  The others that require?  strength of spirit are more difficult, only because they usually happen without much fanfare or recognition.?  Courage has as many definitions as "love."?  Soldiers.....yes, I have to whole-heartedly vote for that one.?  My youngest daughter, a recent college graduate, has just been accepted by the Army for officer candidate school.?  Since her civilian training is in the medical field, that is where she will be used.?  She will most certainly be deployed, and her decision to serve in this way, to travel this path, knowing that she did not have to make this choice, but did anyway, makes me so proud that it takes my breath away.?
Courage to you and Marianne......I think you have finally reached a clearing in the forest.....
Linda
Bob,
Thank you Bob for your story of courage.
RoseMarie
Dear Bob and Marianne,
That was a beautiful list of definitions for courage!?  A friend of mine ends all of his emails with the following sig, which I believe deserves to be included, as well:
"Courage is fear that has said its prayers."
Love and God bless,
Sharon
Dear Bob and Marianne. Thanks for the letter entitled Courage. Beautiful message and words. I am so glad Marianne is doing well. She is in my prayers so often. I will continue to do so--remember you and your family. Thanks for the emails. Some of them are so encouraging to me also. Love and Prayers, Vista
Bob,
These are two of my favorite quotes and I keep them in mind when I can.?  I too am a cancer survivor, but I find courage the pivotal human quality in all things.
Courage is the first of human qualities because it is the quality that guarantees the others. - Aristotle
One isn't necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential.?  Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency.?  We can't be kind, true, merciful, generous or honest. - Maya Angelou
Every step I take, every day I live, I am reminded that all things hinge on courage.
God bless you both today!
kgs
Thank Lord for your servant Bob who has been gifted with words to encourage and strengthen those in need like myself.
Thank you Bob for you and Marianne who are a testament to courage and faith.
I pray for many who are? lost or seeking the Lord to be brought to Him through your wisdom and strength that has been given to you by the Lord in order to reach his people. Amen.
Sue (Qatar, Middle East)
Bob,
When I think of courage, I think of Marianne ... and you my friend.
And all the others who are battling ... and those that share the? journey with them.?  Particularly those that battle alone.
I think of my friend Michael, who has just discovered that he has advanced prostate cancer ... and thank God that I have walked that way before him and can now encourage him.
It's just a small step from courage to encourage.
You do that each day for us all, Bob.?  Thank you.
Kind regards,
David & Faye
Melbourne, Australia.
wow, bob
what a startling list
Being a missionary is courageous too.?  Being away from the familiar doing what you know to be honest and true, that takes courage.?  I think of the medical personnel in the New Orleans airport - they are courageous.?
I think you and Marianne are courageous too.?  You face life head on - that takes courage - there have been days when pulling the covers over the head and staying in bed would have been easier - but you did not - you blessed the world with your presence - that took courage.?
Thanks for the lesson...?
Fran

"I wish you enough!"
written by Bob Perks (c) 2001

"I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough "Hello's" to get you through the final "Goodbye."
