Today's Message:
"I promised one more
Christmas"
By Bob Perks
If you don't like touchy feely stories you may want to
skip this one.
If you don't like tree huggers, then you won't understand
this at all.
I talk to trees, flowers and all living things. They
are as much a part of who I am as my parents.
I have a pine tree in my front yard that I raised from a
sapling. It's been a part of my life for more than sixteen
years. I found it in the shadows of another pine tree. One that
stood maybe thirty feet tall.
That tree and I go back through many a snow storm, dry
summers and wet springs. It was much too small to decorate that first
Christmas, but I draped a few strands of tinsel on it anyway.
"Next year I'll add lights!" I joked with my
wife.
Through the years it protected us from the sun as we sat
on our porch. It slowed the wind down a bit in those winter storms,
too.
We have discovered nests in the strongest of branches and
watched as birds paused in their journey to sit there awhile.
I can measure the time we've known each other by how easy
it was to place a star on top of the tree that first year it was big enough to
decorate. Soon I needed a step stool, then a ladder. Finally, I
could no longer reach the top so I settled for red ribbons and lights just
part way up the tree.
There was never a consideration to ever cut it down,
though one summer it appeared to be losing its needles.
But it survived.
This year though...this year it must go.
We are adding an addition to our home for my wife's
sake. It is standing in the way. The contractor said he would have
to remove a number of branches to get the equipment in place.
But I promised this tree one more Christmas.
I decorated it on Sunday.
"One more Christmas," I said as I stood on our
porch. "I promise."
They started digging today. When I wasn't
looking...I turned and the man had cut away so very much.
I gasped when I saw it. It was like seeing an old
friend attacked.
"You promised!" I heard it say as it stood near
naked half way up.
"Oh, no!" I shouted. "Not that many
branches!"
"You are going to cut it down, right?" he
said.
"I wanted to keep it."
"It will block your view," he said.
"That was my view. I promised it one more
Christmas."
Of course he looked at me with that look.
"My boys helped me raise that tree."
I walked over and grabbed a branch. Rubbing it
between my fingers I could smell 16 years of Christmas swimming through the
air.
"I'm sorry, so sorry," I whispered.
I gathered all the cut off branches and trimmed them down
to smaller pieces. Stacking them in the front yard, I planned on placing a
sign, "Free Christmas greens."
Then it came to me. I'll call Hill the Florist down
the street and ask if they need pine.
"Yes, Oh yes! That would be wonderful!" the owner
said.
Within minutes a small van pulled up and I helped the man
fill his truck.
Tonight as I write this the tree still stands like the
mighty pine it grew from. In the next few days I will need to cut it
down.
The only real joy I have in all of this is knowing that so
many people will get to enjoy my tree this year in wreaths, grave decorations,
and special holiday arrangements.
I am saddened, still and my heart will ache when I finally
cut it down.
I promised it one more Christmas. It will be a
glorious one indeed.
I must go now and tell it I wrote about it tonight
because..."I promised one more Christmas."
"I believe in You!"
