Today's Message:
"The Last Mile"
By Bob Perks
"Where will you be on that last mile?" I
heard.
I didn't turn to look. I didn't wonder where it was
coming from. It was, you know, that Voice.
We often times refer to life as a journey. It is a
path we take, a road to somewhere that all began the day we were
born.
I read somewhere that we average about 5,000 steps a
day. That's about 2.5 miles. It's a journey alright. Any less
than that and you really aren't doing much for yourself physically they
say.
The last few weeks here have brought rather warm
temperatures for this time of year. Better weather brings out the walkers
and runners. I'll admit it right now. There are some Saturday
mornings when I look out the window and see those happy, healthy people passing
by that I yell at them..."Show off!"
I moan a bit and sit down to a bowl of Sugar Smacks and a
cup of coffee.
I'm in the business of hope. I'll leave fitness to
others.
But then again this thought of the last mile came
up.
"Where will you be on that last mile?"
I thought about it for awhile and came up with a few
choices.
I hope that I am either on my way to or coming from
helping someone who needed me.
I would wish I was walking hand in hand with my wife along
the shore. Then sitting down to watch a magnificent sunset, I stay up long
enough to see it rise one more time.
I would like to be standing at the end of my journey
waving goodbye to my family after a wonderful day together.
Maybe walking out of the gates of the Bloomsburg Fair,
closing night.
Walking away from the table after a big turkey dinner with
all the trimmings.
Or knowing it was the last mile and writing one more story
for you so I could say "Goodbye" and not leave you wondering "what ever happened
to Bob?"
I want to be doing, being, trying, living, laughing,
loving, and smiling. I don't want to go quietly, peacefully unaware.
I don't want to think I am at the end, but at the very beginning of still
another journey. I don't want to see the road ahead coming to an end, but
curving slightly, teasing my curiosity. I want to feel like a young child
eager and waiting to run ahead to get a glimpse of what lies there beyond the
horizon. I want my pulse to race and my heart to beat like they do
each time I see my wife walking toward me. I want to be planning, plotting
and mapping out still another "grand idea" that will save the
world.
"Where will you be on that last mile?"
Still, if this be it, I humbly thank God that I have spent
it with you, my friend.
"Where will you be on that last mile?"
"I believe in You!"

I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive. I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish you enough "Hello's" to get you through the final "Goodbye." |
