Today's Message:
"Do the right thing"
By Bob Perks
"Do the right thing," he said.
"But..."
"Do the right thing!"
"You're not much of a help," I said.
"You'll see," he replied.
Sounds so simple. There's no great words of wisdom in
those words to
make one pause and sigh at the value of it all. It
was
just one of those logical things. Those pieces of
advice you
ask for and never really find great value in.
Like, "Every time I eat that I get a headache," I told my
doctor.
"Don't eat that," he replied.
Logic. I hate logic.
"If you must choose between being right or being kind,
always
choose kind." Dr. Wayne Dyer.
Now there's wisdom in that. If you think about it,
being kind might
avoid an unnecessary conflict. You know, you
are having a discussion
with a friend and he insists he is right but you know
better. Being kind means
you'll let it go and hope he discovers he's wrong
later. Nothing life threatening,
or incredibly important to prove. Just a
disagreement.
Choose being kind.
But doing the right thing is difficult. I mean
sometimes you have no idea what
the "right thing" to do really is. If it was a moral
judgment or an ethical
decision you were about to make, the right thing is the
logical thing to do.
I chose to do the right thing recently.
A person I really admire called me a few months ago and
asked me to speak
at an awards event for 5th graders. I was honored
that she thought of me. Her kind
and generous words made me blush.
"Yes, I'd be honored to do it," I said.
Recently she called to remind me. I confirmed once
again that
I was happy to do it.
That evening I mentioned it to my wife.
"When is it?" she asked.
"May 31st.," I said.
"It can't be! That's the night we are going with the
family to the circus.
You know we have been doing this
every year since Keith's cancer.
It's his 10th anniversary being
cancer free. This year more than any other..."
"Yes, you're right. I know, I know...I forgot.
What am I going to do?" I said.
I thought for a moment.
"The presentation at the awards ceremony wasn't a paid
event.
I mean you had no contract," my wife said. "There's plenty of time
for them to find someone else. Maybe you could ask a
friend."
"But...I gave my word," I said.
We both continued watching the news.
I'll admit that I was going to try and find a way
out. I couldn't
possibly miss this year's event. The six of us together ten years
after his last chemo would mean so much.
"Do the right thing," the Voice said.
Yes, I heard you.
Later that night I told my wife that I'd have to miss the
circus.
She knew I would. My wife always teased me about
this need to do what's right. Her joke is,
"If you found a dime on the highway you'd call the
governor and turn it in!"
Well, that's a bit extreme. Maybe a
quarter. Just before going to bed I emailed my friend to confirm
our
conversation and I mentioned my dilemma.
"No matter what I will be there," I wrote. "What time do I
speak?"
All night long it bothered me. Of all the
years I'd miss, this one
was the most important one.
The next morning I got an email from her.
"Bob, I am so sorry. The event starts at 6:00 and
you could be out
of there before 7:00" she
wrote.
I chose to do the right thing and tell my friend the
truth. It worked out that I
can still speak at the ceremony and get to the show a
little late.
Perfect!
Oh, yes. There was a bonus. On top of it all I
will be speaking from the stage of the old
high school I attended. It's now an
elementary/middle school. I performed on
that stage in chorus. I was in at least two musicals
there. My high school memories
began rushing through my head.
Can you imagine what it will be like for me to return
after all these years and stand there
once more?
Awesome! I have chills right now. I can't wait
to write that story!
"Do the right thing" and the right thing will always be
returned.
"I believe in You!"

RE:"Dreams do come true"
Bob,
How Awesome! You got to meet her.....Did you ever meet
him?
(or was the time you missed the only time you would have?)
...I
loved his books(we were in Amway and they were suggested
reading....along with other famous people...Napoleon Hill
...
Dale Carnegie etc...so much to learn! ) I know the names you
mentioned...except for one ...Gove isn't familiar...what
is the
first name? Isn't it great all these people...and
YOU....share?
Have a beautiful day!

Oh Bob,
What a wonderful trip down memory lane for me, as well.
Thank you!
I was introduced to Og Mandino's work many years ago, and have
never been the same. I've given his books as gifts, and
his words as hope.
Now, with the internet, I realize my book time has taken a
back seat.
Fortunately, I have a quite acceptable substitute, although I
dare call you
a substitute. You are an extension of the man Og Mandino
was, and a
tribute to his shared gift. The messages of Og, and you,
warm my soul,
delight my imagination and keep my spirits
aloft. Bless your heart, and
thanks for reminding me to stop by a bookstore
today.....
Sue
p.s. What a wonderful inspiration Bette must be and how
fortunate you
are to have added her friendship to your lengthy
list.
Dear Bob, I just read this message today. I absolutely LOVE your
messages,
but this one got to me. I think I have read all or almost all of Og
Mandino's books
and was sad and disappointed that I would never get a chance to meet
him. I missed
out on hearing him speak at a convention too. What an exceptional
experience for you.
Bless you for all you do for your friends you have never met and thanks for
giving of
yourself! Phyllis B.
