"I need not ask God "how am I doing?"  Just the fact that
I am surrounded by love and more friends than I can count
tells me I must be doing something right.  Don't count things
when you want to know your value in life.  If you can count God
in what you value most, you are by far the wealthiest of all."

Today's Message:
"Do I make you proud?"

In my career I have spoken to large corporations, small churches and
everything in between.

I have had the opportunity to share my thoughts in person with as few as
one and as many as several thousand.

Do I get nervous each time?  Yes!  I hope I always do.  I never want to feel
so confident about what I'm about to do that I fail to be concerned and at
my very best.

But the most challenging presentation is always when I speak to young people.

I did just that on Wednesday.

I was introduced and as I began to walk toward the stage, everything appeared
to move in slow motion.

You see, I was not only speaking to a group of fifth grade students, but I would
be standing on the exact same stage I stood on during my high school years.

I took my place at the podium, looked down to my left and found myself looking
into the eyes of all our tomorrows.

I said a few words and then looked to my right.  There in the audience were their
parents, grand parents, a few teachers and other loved ones.  They were looking at me
wondering what I was about to say to their children.  Would they agree?  Would my
words undue anything they spent years trying to formulate in their children?

I'm not that radical.  Still, I felt the obligation to stay within certain boundaries.

I asked the entire fifth grade class to stand up and turn to their left.

"Now, let's give your loved ones a round of applause for the terrific job they have
done raising you."

It was thunderous.

I felt then that I could almost say anything because I took the time to recognize the
important role the parents played in all of this.

As I continued with my talk, I happened to mention that I graduated from this very
school back in 1968.  I told them that I had sung and danced on this very stage.

As I said that, I glanced to my right and back toward the very spot I stood in my teens.

It was really just a glance, but the moment played in my heart like an old movie.  Flashback
images of myself at that age moved slowly through that place in my mind where I store all
the good things I want to think about again when faced with thoughts of failure.

I could see myself happy, free and completely oblivious to what was about to happen from 1968
until 2006.

2006?  I had absolutely no thoughts of 2000 anything.

I have never been to an official class reunion.  That is until that evening.

I went back there and saw all my friends standing there on stage with me.

I went on to share my heart with these incredibly beautiful and gifted 5th graders.

Of course, I closed my talk with my "I wish you enough" and as I stepped down off the stage Marianne
was standing there waiting for me.

A perfect way to return to reality.

It was a defining moment for me.   Even though it was a small venue, it was an incredibly
huge event in my life.

As we walked up the aisle to the back of the auditorium, I took one last glance back.

Oddly enough, I thought of the final show of "American Idol."

Taylor Hicks did his song and then stood center stage to face the judges.

This was my moment.  I went back in time.  I went home and although I didn't get to sing for them,
Taylor's winning song played in my soul.

Then I asked the question...1968 Class of Wyoming Valley West..."Do I make you proud?"

Here are the lyrics and a link to where you can watch Taylor sing the song:

"Do I make you proud?"
American Idol, Taylor Hicks

I've never been
The one to raise my hand
That was not me
and now that's who I am
Because of you
I am standing tall

My heart is full
of endless gratitude
You were the one
The one to guide me through
Now I can see
And I believe
It's only just beginning

This is what we dream about
But the only question with me now
Is do I make you proud
Stronger than I've ever been now
Never been afraid of standing out
Do I make you proud

Everybody needs to rise up
Everybody needs to be loved
To be loved

"I wish you enough!"
written by Bob Perks (c) 2001

"I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough "Hello's" to get you through the final "Goodbye."
