In professional sports, where multimillion-dollar contracts and huge egos seem to dominate the news, being a good sport isn't always the norm. Even players and coaches in amateur sports occasionally show their dark side. I had one personal experience as a kid that taught me just how important it is to conduct yourself with class on and off the playing field, when or lose. They were part of a huge volunteer effort in the 2005 Special Olympics Summer Games held at the Catholic University of America. Copyright 2004, Disabled Sports USA. All rights reserved. Lindsay Nielsen recently became the first woman amputee to complete an Ironman Triathlon. In September, she competed in the Madison, Wisconsin event where she completed the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and 26.2-mile run in 16 hours, 32 minutes. Over 1600 athletes competed in roller skating, running, walking, swimming, bowling, and many other sports. An Oklahoma Chapter of Disabled Sports USA will host its 6th annual Endeavor Games June 9-12 for athletes with physical disabilities. Some of the athletes competing are soldiers recently injured in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Read about the Games in our next "Spotlight". Now that summer is approaching, it's time to examine once again the potential dangers of exercising in the heat.
