There are some simple conclusions I have reached throughout the years after observing literally hundreds fall into this trap: 1. We cannot find happiness by doing something to someone we would not like them to do to us. 2. Hiding only creates inner conflict. 3. All of us, our spouse, our lover and we ourselves, deserve something better. 4. This almost always ends in pain for all involved. 5. Inner peace is very difficult in such situations. 6. We are usually seeking to satisfy our needs for "freedom" and "affirmation." Are we really freer and more worthy because we have a lover? 7. The lover is usually interesting, accepting and affirming of us simply because we do not share the daily life and responsibilities we do with our spouse. If we were to divorce and marry our lover, we would soon feel the need for a new lover. 8. Lying and cheating seldom bring happiness. 9. We lose much more physical and emotional energy. THE SEA, THE WAVE, THE FOAM When we are focused on the sexual level, we tend to see others around us as bodies. We see them as sources of pleasure, or perhaps if they are contenders, as threats to our pleasure. We seldom see the other as a fellow soul who needs our love and support. So many young people have been pushed into marriage by their sexual attraction only to find out in the end that they have completely different personalities, goals, and interests in life. Many of us have felt the powerful excitement of erotas gradually subside as life becomes responsibilities and routine. It is usually at these moments that we seek out new extra-marital relationships in order to reclaim that feeling of excitement, youth, joy, or pleasure. But erotas passes like the big wave that grows bigger and bigger, gaining momentum, creating an orgasmic flurry of foam, before it slowly disappears into the sea. It was nice, but it ended. Love is like the sea: deep, steady, unchanging, uniting all. The sea is love, the wave is erotas, and sex is the foam on top. The foam is short lived, the wave survives somewhat longer, and the sea is forever. All are, however, forms of water or the need for unity. THE PROBLEM OF ENERGY DRAIN Each individual has only so much energy with which to sustain his balance and his health while simultaneously coping with his responsibilities and problems. When one person enters into sexual union with another their auras, or energy fields, intermix. There is momentary blending of their emotional and physical energies. If they are spiritually attuned, there can also be an uniting of their spiritual energies, which is a truly beautiful event. When we engage in sexual contact with another person several times, there starts to build up between us a linking of emotional channels that make one very open emotionally to the other. Identification and attachment result. Emotional dependencies and expectations start to develop and we become more vulnerable to the other's energies. We can be easily hurt and disturbed, and can more easily lose our peace of mind when things do not go well with the other person. This is draining enough, emotionally, mentally and spiritually, when we have only one sexual relationship. Imagine what happens to our emotional, mental and spiritual reserves when we have more than one relationship. We become torn, drained, depleted of clarity and unable to reasonably fulfil our responsibilities to any of these relationships. The various psychological atmospheres of our relationships continuously affect us. LEVELS OF INTERCHANGE Sexual energy and sexual orgasm are perhaps our most powerful experience of universal cosmic energy at this stage of our evolution. Perhaps in a thousand years, we will have evolved to the state where the energy and excitement now generated by sex and power today will eventually be generated by music, nature, love, service and eventually contact with the Divine. We would then get the same orgasmic pleasure through simply loving, serving, or feeling unity with another or with the Divine in all. OUR POLARITY As long as we are in these physical bodies, our sexual polarity is a reality. We are like electrons and protons with opposite charges. We are naturally attracted to each other, yet we are more conscious than the electron and proton. We have the ability, through conscious inner work, to harmonize the male and female within and thus lessen the differential of these opposite charges. This means developing the qualities that are missing from our being. A man is attracted to the woman for the qualities she has that he has not. A woman, in turn, is attracted to a man for the qualities that are not yet incorporated in her conscious self. As souls, however, we are neither male nor female. We are both and yet neither. As we develop into whole human beings - not so polarized into our programmed role models - our charge will not be so opposite. Our love will then be expressed more purely toward all without being distorted by sexual needs or infatuation. We will not give greater importance or power to the opposite sex or have feelings of antagonism toward it. This wholeness and harmony of male-female characteristics has been exemplified by saintly souls who embrace a wholeness comprised of love, sensitivity, peacefulness, flow, understanding, wisdom, detachment, passion, determination, strength, and the courage to fight. THE TRANSMUTATION OF SEXUAL ENERGY It is known in many circles of esoteric philosophy that the sexual energy can be transmuted into spiritual energy for greater creative power or for the purpose of enlightenment. It must be understood, however, that transmutation does not mean suppression. When we suppress a feeling or need, it just remains stored up, building pressure within us. If we learn to transform it, it becomes something subtler and is eventually expressed in another way, such as through writing, dance, music, art, social service, meditative states, etc. It should be noted that the art of transmutation of sexual energy is often dangerous and requires a spiritual teacher, and, of course, a suitable consenting marriage partner. Even more important, it requires great self-control and discipline, years of vegetarianism, meditation, abstention from drugs of any kind and impeccable control over the movements of the mind. Otherwise there are dangers to the body and mind. ONE UNIVERSAL SPIRIT The key to the process of transmutation of sexual energy is the transformation of our perception of the world. We need to see our loved one as an incarnation of the Divine. We also need to experience everyone as a manifestation of the same one universal consciousness of which we are a part. When this ceases to be an idea and becomes an experience, our energies will finally be transmuted and everything we do will be divine. Thus, what is really necessary is a transformation of our perception to grant us freedom, giving exclusive importance to the illusion of these temporary bodies - ours and others'. We need to remember that bodies and personalities we desire so much and believe we «need» are temporary formations of earth that will some day become earth again. It is natural to love, appreciate and care for our and others' bodies and minds, but we have much to gain by also focusing on the spirit within that is eternal and without gender or personality as we know it.
