HEAVEN, OUR GOAL
"And He shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there shall no longer be any death; there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away." (Revelation 21:4)

Here is a great trivia question: What is the best year ever by a professional golfer on the PGA Tour?

Maybe Hogan in 1953 or Nelson in 1945? How about Tiger Woods in 2000?

These have merit, but here is my choice as the best year ever by a professional golfer: Payne Stewart in 1999. He won the U.S. Open and went to heaven in the same year. Think about that for a minute. Payne left a winner and is now enjoying the incredible benefits of peace and prosperity with our Father, "where there shall no longer be any death…mourning, or crying, or pain."

The start of a new year is likely to be filled with promise and challenges and hope. The professional tours will soon begin, filled again with promise and challenges and hope. Everyone starts even. I like that about golf. You don't get paid for what you did last year. It is all related to how you perform today.

One of great goals of the Christian journey is to finish well. God willing, we will spend 2007 realizing this goal. To do that, we have to keep asking ourselves: What is my relationship with Jesus today? We are saved by Christ's grace, but Scripture also tells us that we will be rewarded in the end for how we have served Him.

Our church here in Texas just completed an inspirational series on heaven. It made me think about how all of earthly life for the Christian is about going Home. C.S. Lewis once said, "If you aim at earth, you may get nothing. If you aim at heaven, you get earth thrown in."

My good neighbor and fellow Links player, Sam Gonzales, gave me a book for Christmas. It is Heaven, by Randy Alcorn. I recommend it highly. Sam wrote a brief note on the inside cover which read, "Since this is our final destination, I thought it would be good to learn more about it." Yes, that would be a good goal for all of us this year.

Lewis, who always has a way of directing our thoughts through words, is quoted in the book. He said, "There have been times when I think we do not desire heaven, but more often I find myself wondering whether, in our heart of hearts, we have ever desired anything else." God has placed this one highest goal in hearts. Let's go get it!

Our goal is to continue doing God's work now in preparation for what He has planned for us later. Our goal is to finish well here and enjoy the eternal peace and truest prosperity to come.

Aim at heaven in 2007. You will get earth thrown in during the process!
