LINKS DAILY DEVOTIONAL A ministry of Links Players International BEFORE THE LORD "Cush was the father of Nimrod, who grew to be a mighty warrior on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; that is why it is said, 'Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord." (Genesis 10:8-9, NIV) I'm still waiting for the day when someone says, "Like Jeff, a mighty golfer before the Lord." I know, I know, my chances of attaining the "mighty golfer" tag are well past me. And I must admit I never really loved to practice enough, even when I was young and had the time. What I'm hoping is that I can still break through to play the game "before the Lord." It is easy, of course, to posit that every moment of our lives are lived before the Lord. That is altogether true--from His perspective. But equally true is that we are quick to forget that fact from our standpoint. We go about too great a portion of our days blind to the presence of God. Soon after this genealogical reference to Nimrod in Genesis, we see what happens when inattention to God reaches the nth degree. The people of the ancient world came together on the plain of Shinar and settled there. After a time, they decided to build a city and a tower. Their reason? "So that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth." The opposite of living before God is living for ourselves. We can make a name for Him, or we can try to make a name for us. The first approach is honored, noted in a man's time and noted in his legacy. The latter approach we will carry with us to God's judgment--and the result, as it was for the people at Shinar, may be the exact reversal of our desired fortune. So here's what we resolve: we must see God. We must see Him in our homes and in our offices and on the golf course. We must see Him in our shopping malls and city parks and on our freeways. We must even see Him in our churches. Only when we see Him, when we become increasingly aware of His enduring presence through the discipline of remembering Him, will we recognize how our lives must change. We will become people who live before the Lord. -- Jeff Hopper January 4, 2007 Copyright 2007 Links Players International The Links Daily Devotional appears Monday-Friday at www.linksplayers.com.
