(Psalm 116:6, NIV) A select group of last year's winners are looking to get off to a fast start on the PGA Tour this week. They will be joined by many more next week, all with the same desire. A nice check early in the year can take a good chunk of pressure off in the weeks to come. But every player knows there is little sense in jumping into the competitive fire without reasonable preparation. For a professional golfer, that means physical and mental conditioning, as well as practice on the course and on the range. What does preparation mean for you and me? How do we get ready, for instance, for a new year? We might be reminded of our best preparation through the lyrics of an old gospel favorite: "Take the Lord 'long with you everywhere you go." On the surface, this seems like a quaint principle, or an obvious one. But if we begin by first admitting that we need the Lord along with us everywhere we go, we will have taken one of the most important first steps in any journey, no matter when it begins or how long it lasts. That step is the humble recognition of our need for a Savior and Provider. In his book Humility: True Greatness, C.J. Mahaney writes convincingly of our need to establish the daily practice of telling God plainly, "I need You." It may sound like a simple prayer, almost infantile. But it is no less true for its elementary status. And, come to think of it, when was the last time you told Him this very thing? Maybe the very fact that we have avoided saying these plain words is a sign of pride. Maybe we really think we have things under control. For all the plans you may have laid already this year, for all the resolutions you have made, don't forget that more important than all your preparation is the set of hands into which you place those plans. Make them God's hands, and you will see just what He does with your year. -- Jeff Hopper January 5, 2007 Copyright 2007 Links Players International The Links Daily Devotional appears Monday-Friday at www.linksplayers.com.
