DRIVE
"Jesus replied, 'No one sets his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.'" (Luke 9:62, NIV)

Some golfers are nine-holers. A couple hours on the course is all they need to satisfy their pleasure in playing the game.

I'm not one of these. And I know many others like me. If we're going to head to the golf course and take the time it takes to get there, we're playing all 18, come what may.

I guess that makes us driven, which relates to a curious question my wife asked me this week. I was in the middle of working on a list of projects when she stepped into the office and asked, "Are you driven?"

She had helped proofread the upcoming 2007 Links Letter magazine in recent days and she was thinking about the many golfers whose stories she now knew. She gathered from her reading that they have one thing in common: they are driven. Indeed they are. You can be the last player on a tour's money list and yet you still would qualify as one of the world's best players. No one can wear a label like that without extreme commitment to the sport.

But I found my wife's question to be incomplete. "Driven to do what?" I asked her.

You see, drive without focus is nothing more than a train wreck waiting to happen. Our drive--gut-tough as it might be--must come with a target in mind. For the Christ follower, that target is the throne of Christ. That's right, you and I can aspire to the throne of Christ. Look: "'To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne'" (Revelation 3:21).

When a man came to Jesus and stated he would follow the Rabbi, he added a condition. "I'll go first and say goodbye to my parents," he told Jesus. Jesus saw the condition attached to the man's proclamation and He seized the man's attention. Jesus communicated flatly: "Here's how it's done: Set your hand and go forward."

Forward.

That's the way of a farmer in the field, setting his line on the end of the row. And that's the way of service in the kingdom, where our eyes guide us to the throne of Christ and our hands set themselves to the task.

Drive is only as good as where it is taking us. But once that purpose is rightly set, let us be as driven as God allows.
