LINKS DAILY DEVOTIONAL A ministry of Links Players International COMPELLING LOVE "So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her." (Genesis 29:20, NIV) While his career shows he is anything but an overnight sensation, Vijay Singh has certainly caused golf's overnight buzz since his win on Sunday afternoon in Hawaii. It was Singh's 30th win on the PGA Tour, which he did not join until 1993, when he was 30 years old. Since his 40th birthday, not quite four years ago, Singh has now won a record 18 events, one more than fellow Hall of Famer Sam Snead after that age. Just when Vijay was being dismissed by some of golf's most respected writers--"too old, it appears," they were saying--the Fijian is back, off to a victorious start after a 2006 season that featured only one win, which was a paltry figure in light of his three previous seasons, including his nine-win 2004 Player of the Year campaign. And what did it for Vijay? Well, if you know anything about the man's legendary workout regime, you would be quick to say "practice." And indeed, Singh himself confesses to an on-the-range off-season, hitting about 400 balls a day. But behind such practice, there must be a compulsion. For Vijay Singh, without a doubt that compulsion is the love of the game, and more particularly, the love of winning at the game. Just yesterday, we peered into Jesus' statement that "no one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God" (Luke 9:62). The man or woman who follows Christ does so rightly with a set determination. Focused on the eventual outcome--joining Christ on His throne (Revelation 3:22)--we gain the drive that takes us forward. Do you love Christ? Do you love the hope of joining Him for eternity? These are the traits that will compel us to serve Him. Our response to Him is the result of letting His love invade us--first the love He has for us, then the love we have for Him. As Jacob worked lightly for his beloved Rachel, so we work for the Lord: with determination born of love. What a tireless joy it is to labor for the One who gave us all we have! -- Jeff Hopper January 9, 2007 Copyright 2007 Links Players International The Links Daily Devotional appears Monday-Friday at www.linksplayers.com.
