(John 10:10a, NIV) Let's consider how we might catalogue our lives. If we are "typical," as is often described by writers and teachers, then we men would start by listing our business involvements and accomplishments, while the women among us would count their relationships, perhaps leading with their family ties. Of course, as our lists progress, men would start to layer in family and friends, and women would include their participation and achievements in business or community. In other words, each of us could show that we have "a life." But quite distant from that might be to show that we have "life." When Jesus announced that He had come to bring us life, there is no doubt that He meant something clearly different from "a life." All around Him, each person had "a life"—as fishermen, tax collectors, soldiers, farmers, priests, prostitutes, mothers, brothers, sisters. They could label their positions and describe their days. That is, they were a lot like us. Jesus was saying something in complete contrast to that. He was saying, in essence, "I have come that your life might have meaning." Meaning is assuredly different from materialism—a word here not defining the pursuit of earthly things, but rather the broader concrete existence of what we call "a life." In fact, it is the difference, as some have written, between a "human being" and a "human doing." We might say that human beings stand on their own two feet, while human doings collect in their own two arms. Jesus came to make us human beings. And our being, our living, is to be in Him. When we make that so through faith in Him, He provides—for He is the Living Water and the Bread of Life. He also illuminates—for He is the Light of Life and alone offers the words of life. He guides—for He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. And He saves—for He is the Resurrection and the Life. These titles are not poetic devices invented by Christian writers down through the ages; they are there in the gospels spoken from Christ's own mouth. To live life, rather than "a life," is to believe on these things and reset our course in life by them and by Him. -- Jeff Hopper January 12, 2007 Copyright 2007 Links Players International The Links Daily Devotional appears Monday-Friday at www.linksplayers.com.
