EVERYONE CAN ACHIEVE- EVEN THE HANDICAP In one of my University of Baltimore classes, a homework assignment I gave to students was to visit offical building in Washington D.C. to see how their architectural style were highly influenced by Ancient Greece. Sounds like a lofty project, but it gave reason for students to visit our nation's capital which under normal circumstances, they may not have done, and this was a Western Civilization class. Students became excited as they prepared for their trip which was not far, since Washington D.C. is only 35 minutes from Baltimore. But not all was well. One student felt left out, and was quite indignant about my choice of this homework project.Bob was handicapped. The trip would be too much for him and at that time, there were few handicap facilities. In the beginning this student rebelled, and said he should be omitted from the project but still get a grade for it. Well that did'nt go over well with me. We finally decided he could do some research which did not require him making the trip. A few weeks later when students turned in their written part of their project, Joe also turned in his. I was amazed. He had taken four major government buildings and designed in each, handicap facilities. In order to do this he had approached some government offcials, told them of his plans and in turn they sent him interior architectural designs of each building, starting from the Library of Congress, to a state building and then the U.S.Capitol, to an embassy. Well not only did Joe receive a good grade for his project but had gained a prestigious position as an architect for the government. Some of his handicap ideas and designs he introduced are being used today. And he did all this in a wheel chair. Yes, Joe made it because he was determined to succeed and did not allow his handicap get inhis way. Actually, his handicap in a way served him well.WHAT HOLDING YOU BACK!website-http://howtosucceedmanual.com or contact me millerrosiland@aol.com and let me know if you liked this story. |
