A Former employee of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration reveals how NASA covers up and erases UFOs from satelite photos. But first a little bit about this former employee:

Donna Tietze Hare, formerly of NASA, female slide technician, the recipient of numerous space awards including 1969 Apollo Achievement award from the National Aeronautics & Space Administration, 1973 Skylab award, a medallion for success on the Skylab-Suez Test project, numerous other awards for her skill as a technical Artist, honors, awards and a 1994 recommendation by Texas Governor Ann Richards to the Advisory Committee of Psychology Associates.

Donna Tietze has spent most of her professional life involved in the Space Program as a technical illustrator. She drew lunar maps, landing slides, she worked in the photo lab, Precision Slide Lab, reducing art work to one inch by one inch drawings. She drew launch sites, landing sites and was employed as a sub-contractor to NASA for over 15 years. She worked on flight manuals for astronauts & has the wonderful ability to put words into images but uniquely, learn to do everything backwards, including mathematical computations, the writing of words, to put it simply, this woman has seen just about all the different kinds of images one could see that are used in Space Programs.

The following is a partial transcript of a radio talk show that occurred 5/6/95 on WOL-AM in Washington D.C. which is simulcast on WOLB-AM in Baltimore Maryland. The show is broadcast every Saturday night at 12:00am. The show is called "UFOs Saturday Night".

Elaine Douglass (ORTK) host of the show: Elaine Douglass: This is Elaine Douglass, WOL News-Talk Network, our show is UFOs Saturday night and here in the studio with Keith Morgan and our topic is the Face On Mars. We have a new guest on the air with us, Donna Tietze. Donna, you are also with three scientists who are on the air with us and that would be Stan McDaniels from California, Erol Toron from the east coast and Dan Drason whose in Colorado.

The reason that I asked Donna to come on the show, Donna is in Houston, Texas and kind enough to join us tonight to tell us some very interesting things she observed while working at NASA. Donna is an educator and she is working on her Masters in Education. In the past Donna, as I understand it you held a position for 15 years with a contractor at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston. You were a photo technician?

Donna Tietze: Correct!

E.D.: Donna welcome to UFOs Saturday Night. Tell me and tell everyone the incident that you recall as they say in the law court, did there come a time when you walked in a photo lab and someone told you something quite astounding? What happened that day?

D.T.: Yes Elaine, that's true. During the Apollo mission I worked at NASA throughout those Apollo missions and I did leave NASA at the time the space shuttles began. I worked in building eight in the photo lab. I had a secret clearance so I thought I could go anywhere in the building. And I did go into one area that was a restricted area. In this area they developed pictures taken from satellites and also all of the missions, the Apollo missions, flight missions. I went in and I was talking to one of the photographers and developers and he was putting together a mosaic which is a lot of photos, smaller photos into a larger photo pattern. And while I was in there I was trying to learn new methods and new things about the whole organization and I was looking at the pictures and he directed my attention to one area, he said, Look at that. I looked and there was a round oval shaped, well it was very white circular shape of a dot and I, it was black & white photography, so I asked him if that was a spot on the emulsion and he said, well I can't tell you but spots on the emulsion do not leave round circles of shadows

E.D.: So there was a shadow on the ground?

D.T.: Right, a round shadow! And I noticed that there were pine trees, now I don't know where this area was or what, you, pretty close to the ground what I saw but I didn't see outline of the continent. But I did notice that there was shadow under this white dot and I also noticed that the trees were casting the shadows in the same direction as this shadow of the circle of this aerial phenomena because it was higher than the trees but not too much higher than the trees but it was close to the ground and it was spherical but slightly elongated, not very much but slightly. I then said, is it a UFO? And he said, Well I can't tell you. And then I asked him, what are you going to do with this piece of information? And he said, well we have to airbrush these things out before we sell these photographs to the public. So I realized at that point that there is a procedure setup to take care of this type of information from the public.

E.D.: Now Donna there is another matter that you learned about when you were there at NASA. I believe this was through a third party, a person that you were spending some time with who was a fellow NASA employee?

D.T.: Right, in fact after we talked, I thought about another incident with a guard that I would like to convey too that's very important. This man that I had dated was in quarantine with the astronauts when they had come back from the moon and I had talked to him about seeing this saucer (satellite photos) and asked him if he had heard anything about that and he told me that every astronaut, every moon trip had been followed by craft, by saucers, that every one of them, every astronaut that went to the moon, now I don't know about other sites but they all had seen it and all had been told to keep quite about it and they were threatened with jail and their whole retirement, everything taken away from them. They were also, this told me that if I ever told that he said it, that he would deny it, that he would never admit that he told me all of that.
 
E.D.: Yes and I believe that Donna you related to me, you friend came to believe that the UFOs were instrumental in getting Apollo 13 that was, ah, our disable mission to the moon, was it 13?

D.T.: Right, well he said that it shouldn't have come back, I mean, there was no, ah, they had help. And that's was all he would say.

E.D.: All he would say?
 
D.T.: He said it was impossible for that craft to have gotten back home.

E.D.: Donna you said that there was another matter that you wanted to relate to us.

D.T.: Yes, something that I didn't talk to you about earlier. When I had quite work, I had an office, I was doing illustration work a another office, in another part of town. And a man that had been a guard at NASA during the time came into my office and he had a large gash scar on his forehead and he told me that he was a guard at NASA and that he was burning a lot of photographs of UFOs. That was his job.

E.D.: Really? (surprised)
 
D.T.: And he said he stopped to look at one too long and one of the other, I gathered it was some type of military man, hit him in the head with a gun butt and knocked him out.
 
E.D.: What?(shocked)

D.T.: Because he had looked at one of the photographs too long, he did describe the photograph
to me which I tend to believe was an accurate photograph.

E.D: Oh, my god!

D.T.: He explained that it was a craft on the ground and it looked like, it was like a regular saucer with like little bumps all over and he said it was like it was burnt. He said cows in the field all had their tails stuck straight up. At the time he said he didn't know when cattle were frightened, that their tails would stick straight up. And he described this to me and since then, I did describe it to someone that I thought might have looked at some of these photos, possibly and they did look kind of frightened that I shouldn't know about that one.

E.D.: The second part of her account had to do with the stalking of our space mission by UFOs of our space missions to the moon and so on. She even said that they apparently helped in
one case by bringing the Apollo 13 back, that was the impression that she got and..
 
D.T.: yes but they (aliens) also didn't want that craft to investigate the part of the moon that they was going to, so they may have caused some of it too, but it was supposed, we were told not to go but we ignored it. Now that's what I've heard, that some of the stuff he was
telling me.

E.D. Did he say that, your direct contact?
 
D.T.: Yes!
 
E.D.: That the United States was told not to go to the moon?
 
D.T.: To that certain place on the back side of the moon.
 
E.D.: And did he know why we weren't supposed to go there?

D.T.: I guess they didn't want us to see something back there, I don't know, I don't know that part. (interview winds down a few minutes later and the show is out of time).

It's been called the longest-running hoax in history - an 800-year-old religious riddle that's taken in popes, scientists and believers from all faiths.

The Turin Shroud has been either worshipped as divine proof that Christ was resurrected from the grave or dismissed as a fraud created by medieval forgers.

But new evidence suggests the shroud might be genuine after all.

As Mel Gibson's film The Passion Of The Christ rekindles interest in Jesus, stitching on the shroud which could have been created only during the messiah's lifetime has been uncovered.

At the same time, tests from 1988 that dated the shroud to between 1260 and 1390 have been thrown into doubt.

Swedish textiles expert Dr Mechthild Flury-Lemberg, who discovered the seam at the back of the cloth during a restoration project, says: "There have been attempts to date the shroud from looking at the age of the material, but the style of sewing is the biggest clue.

"It belongs firmly to a style seen in the first century AD or before."

Her findings are being hailed as the most significant since 1988, when scientists controversially carbon-dated the 14ft-long cloth to medieval times, more than 1,000 years after Jesus died.

Yet experts now say the team unwittingly used cloth that had been added during a 16th-century restoration and it could have been contaminated from handling.

Mark Guscin, of the British Society for the Turin Shroud, says: "The discovery of the stitching along with doubt about the carbon-dating all add to the mountain of evidence suggesting this was probably the shroud Jesus was buried in.

"Scientists have been happy to dismiss it as a fake, but they have never been able to answer the central question of how the image of that man got on to the cloth."

Barrie Schwortz, who in 1978 took part in the first scientific examination of the shroud, says: "I was a cynic before I saw it, but I am now convinced this is the cloth that wrapped Jesus of Nazareth after he was crucified."

The history of the cloth - which bears the ghostly image of a bearded man - is steeped in mystery.

The first documented reference was in 1357, when it was displayed in a church in Lirey, France. The cloth astonished Christians as it showed a man wearing a crown of thorns and bearing wounds on his front, back and right-hand side.

He also had a wrist wound, which confused some pilgrims who thought Jesus was nailed to the cross through his hands. Scientists have since discovered the wrists were used as the hands could not support the body's weight.

Before it arrived in France, it is thought the shroud was known as the Edessa burial sheet, given to King Abgar V by one of Jesus's disciples.

For the next 1,200 years it was kept hidden in the Iraqi city, brought out only for religious festivals. In 944 it is thought to have turned up in Constantinople, Turkey, before being stolen by the French knight Geoffrey de Charny during the Fourth Crusades.

It soon became Europe's most-revered religious artefact, although it was scorched in a fire in 1532. In 1578 it was moved to Turin in northern Italy and was frequently paraded through the streets to huge crowds.

Yet while the shroud attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims when it goes on display, it was not photographed until 1898. The photographer, Secondo Pia, was amazed at the incredible depth and detail revealed on the negative.

There were even rumours that the shroud had healing qualities after the British philanthropist Leonard Cheshire took a disabled girl to see it in 1955. After being given permission to touch it, 10-year-old Josephine Woollam made a full recovery.

But it wasn't until 1978 that scientists were allowed to examine the shroud for the first time.

The Shroud of Turin Research Project spent 120 hours examining the cloth in minute detail but was unable to explain how the image had got there. Barrie Schwortz, the project's photographer, says: "We did absolutely every test there was to try to find out how that image had got there.

"We used X-rays, ultra-violet light, spectral imaging and photographed every inch of it in the most minute detail, but we still couldn't come up with any answers.

"We weren't a bunch of amateurs. We had scientists who had worked on the first atomic bomb and the space programme, yet we still couldn't say how the image got there. The only things we could say was what it isn't: that it isn't a photograph and it wasn't a painting.

"It's clear that there has been a direct contact between the shroud and a body, which explains certain features such as the blood, but science just doesn't have an answer of how the image of that body got on to it."

A second study was carried out in 1988, when scientists cut a sliver from the edge of the shroud and subjected it to carbon-dating.

Carbon has a fixed rate of decay, which means that it is possible to accurately measure when the plant materials that formed the basis of the cloth were harvested.

The announcement that the shroud was a fake was made on October 13, 1988, at the British Museum. Scientists compared those who still thought the shroud was authentic to flat-earthers.

It led to the humiliating spectacle of the then Cardinal of Turin, Anastasio Alberto Ballestrero, admitting the garment was a hoax.

The Catholic Church also accepted the scientists' findings - an embarrassing admission given that Pope John Paul II had kissed the shroud eight years earlier.

But experts now say the carbon-dating results are wrong. Ian Wilson, co-author of The Turin Shroud: Unshrouding The Mystery, says they were flawed from the moment the sample was taken.

He says: "What I found quite incredible was that when they had all the scientists there and ready to go, an argument started about where the sample would come from.

"This went on for some considerable time before a very bad decision was made that the cutting would come from a corner that we know was used for holding up the shroud and which would have been more contaminated than anywhere else."

Marc Guscin, author of Burial Cloths Of Christ, believes the most compelling evidence for the shroud's authenticity comes from a small, blood-soaked cloth kept in a cathedral in Oviedo, northern Spain.

The Sudarium is believed to have been used to cover Jesus's head after he died and, unlike the shroud, its history has been traced back to the first century. It contains blood from the rare AB group found on the shroud.

Mark says: "Laboratory tests have shown that these two cloths were used on the same body.

"The fact that the Sudarium has been revered for so long suggests it must have held special significance for people. Everything points towards this cloth being used on the body of Jesus of Nazareth."

Yet despite the latest discoveries, there are still many sceptics.

Professor Stephen Mattingly, from the University of Texas, says the image could have been created by bacteria which flourish on the skin after death. "This is not a miracle," he says. "It's a physical object, so there has to be a scientific explanation. With the right conditions, it could happen to anyone. We could all make our own Turin Shroud."

Another theory, put forward by South African professor Nicholas Allen, is that the image was an early form of photography.

However fierce the controversy, the shroud is still a crowd-puller. When it last went on display in 2000, more than three million people saw it. Many more visitors are expected when it next goes on show in 2025.

Mark believes the argument will rage on. He says: "The debate will go on and on because nobody can prove one way or another if this was the shroud that covered the body of Jesus. There simply isn't a scientific test of 'Christness'.

"But there are lots of pointers to suggest it was."

Sometimes modernization can uncover pieces of the past, as when construction projects uncover archaeological sites.

But in the case of the Mendocino County Courthouse in downtown Ukiah, California, a new security system is apparently revealing the presence of some long-time residents of the building who have a mind of their own despite their lack of an earthly body.

In other words, they're ghosts.

New, high-tech, motion-detecting cameras are revealing to security and janitorial staff that something is moving about the courthouse's gloomy halls in the still hours of the night.

Something best described as a "mist" has repeatedly appeared on the cameras moving back and forth across the courthouse's lower hallway where the jury selection department is located.

A janitor who saw the tape said this ghostly apparition can also be seen floating up in front of the light that hangs down in this hallway, causing the light to be partially obscured.

This janitor also said that a "little box lights up" when motion is detected, "and you can see the box light up and then it lights up somewhere else."

New metal-detecting machines at the courthouse entrances have also gone off without a soul -- or at least a soul combined with a body -- to be found, according to some of the security personnel.

To the janitors and some of the long-time employees in the building, these occurrences are something of a vindication.

"We've known there was something here for years," said the janitor "informant," who, like everybody else, would prefer not to risk ridicule from skeptics by providing his name. Many talk of how "spooky" the building gets once it gets dark and cleared out of (living) people.

Many in the building refer to the supernatural occurrences in the building as belonging to a spirit named "George," and this name has been passed down through the years through generations of employees.

The courthouse is comprised of two different sections, one built in the 1920s and one built in the 1950s. But parts of the building also comprise remnants of an earlier courthouse from the "Wild West" era which itself had replaced an earlier courthouse.

Just a brief review of some of the incidents that occurred in one version of the courthouse or another supply ample evidence that the site has some dark history.

The only execution that took place in Mendocino County history occurred on the courthouse roof, in the days before executions were moved to San Quentin.

A judge was also shot and killed by an irate defendant during a trial. The man made his escape from the courthouse but a posse brought him back and they were in the middle of hanging him on the street when a lawyer made an impassioned speech calling for the rule of law, so the man was taken to San Quentin.

The county jail was also located on the site of old, and evidence of jail bars are still to be seen in some areas of the existing building. Apparently one of those incarcerated in the jail committed suicide.

As for the janitor the Daily Journal spoke to, he didn't know how to connect to any historical tale the apparition he and another janitor witnessed one night about 10 p.m. as they were sitting in a janitor's closet.

"Someone came walking down the hallway and we didn't think much of it," he explained. "The door was open and I caught out of the side of my eye a dress walking by and high heels. After it went past the doorway, it only went about five more steps and then it stopped."

He went out in the hallway to see who it was, but nobody was there. "There was nowhere for this person to go in five steps," he said. "It either would have had to continue on down the hallway or turn left down another long hallway." The latter direction would have taken the ghost directly to the area that the motion cameras have been picking up strange imagery.

In addition, this janitor and his colleagues -- along with other members of the courthouse administration who spoke with the Daily Journal -- have witnessed the elevator traveling up and down the various levels of the building with no one in it, and always at night.

"One time the elevator started up from the ground floor and we could hear it stopping on every floor," the janitor said. "When it got to the top, it turned around and did the same thing back down. And then I had to get into the thing and go up and clean the top floor."

MOFFETT FIELD, Calif. -- The building blocks of life pervade the solar system, and probably the universe, locked up in planetary polar ice caps, crouching in the interstices of ancient volcanic rocks, zooming around on comets and meteorites, drifting between galaxies in interstellar space, or wafting gently down in cosmic dust.
 
"The universe is hard-wired to form a lot of the compounds that make life," says astrophysicist Scott A. Sandford of NASA's Ames Research Center. "But that doesn't mean it's happening. There may be a lot of places where the process gets frustrated, and since we haven't seen it on any planet except our own, it's just a story."

But it is a story that scientists take ever more seriously. This year, especially, the study of possible life forms elsewhere in the universe has taken on a new shine, brightened by the spectacular success of the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity in discovering the first physical evidence that liquid water once rested on the surface of a celestial body other than Earth. Water, a fundamental requirement for life as scientists can imagine it, is known to be ubiquitous in the universe, but actually finding physical evidence of its past presence on Mars has nevertheless had a galvanizing effect.

Last week, 700 scientists and engineers showed up for the Astrobiology Science Conference 2004 at the Ames center, bringing together researchers whose interests ranged from building DNA in the lab to listening for radio signals from intelligent beings far, far away.

"People take different paths," said astrophysicist Mario Livio of NASA's Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. "A lot of people look at Earth and draw analogies. Astronomers look at the solar system, meteorites and comets, or they look for extra-solar planets" orbiting distant stars.

The Mars rovers have offered scientists a chance to move from speculation to more practical questions: If there is life elsewhere, what form will it take? What should we look for?

"It will be microbial," said University of Colorado molecular biologist Norman Pace. "It will be a bunch of different microbes in a community-based environment. The rules of the game will be different, but there will be a suite of organisms designed to cope with their geophysical situation."

Depending on the scientist, however, there were varying views about even such basic questions as when something becomes "life." Livio described "a simple something able to replicate and pass on information." Sandford said he would look for "an accumulation of functionalities" -- the organism would "know its inside from its outside" and be able to "drag electrons around" to form different compounds.

But regardless of the definition, the rationale behind the search for microbes on Mars or elsewhere in the solar system appeared to be a no-brainer among the researchers: "More than 85 percent of the history of life on Earth is exclusively the history of single-celled organisms," said Ames research scientist David Des Marais, a member of the Mars rover team. "On Earth microbial life runs the place. It's going to be the easiest to find."

Also, noted Ames astrobiologist Jonathan Trent, microbes have demonstrated remarkable ability to endure in hostile environments. "We find them in near-boiling sulfuric acid, in ice, growing in high levels of radiation," he said. "If you find me a microbial life form somewhere else in the solar system, I think it will be very similar to what we have here. To look for anything else in our solar system is absurd. Beyond our solar system, of course, all bets are off."

To exist and prosper, microbes (the generic term for microscopic organisms) have a couple of chemical requirements, chief among them liquid water. "There might be another solvent," Sandford said. "But water is one of the most abundant substances in the universe," and it also has the priceless ability to act as a medium for the formation of the complex, yet stable, carbon-based organic molecules that make up living organisms. Scientists say there is little doubt that carbon, which on Earth is contained in more compounds than all other elements combined, will serve as the raw material for life forms on other worlds.

"Carbon can form multiple chemical bonds, and fold and bend in the presence of water," Sandford explained. "There's nothing like it."

And like water, carbon is everywhere. Mars's atmosphere is composed mostly of carbon dioxide, and its polar caps contain dry ice as well as water ice. Comets spew carbon compounds such as methane, methanol, ethane and formaldehyde from their tails, and planets like the "gas giants" Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are cloaked in gaseous hydrocarbons, too.

Having conditions necessary for life does not, however, mean that life has to happen. Cornell University's Stephen W. Squyres, lead scientist for the Mars rovers team, acknowledged in a conference lecture that Opportunity's discovery of what may have been a salt sea on the Martian surface was evidence "of what was once a habitable environment," but he took care in subsequent remarks to note that "I have no idea" whether organisms ever lived there.

And besides the necessary chemicals, there are a host of other circumstances that may have to align perfectly before life can develop. Many of the extra-solar planets so far discovered have elliptical orbits, so they travel both too far from and too close to their stars. Venus, almost the same size as Earth, has a circular orbit, but is 26 million miles closer to the sun. Is it too hot for life to form?

Livio noted that the moon stabilizes the Earth's axis, preventing wobbling that could perhaps cause catastrophic climate change. And, he asked, what effect could the bombardment of other planets by asteroids or comets have in causing mass extinctions like those that occurred on Earth? Or how important is it for a planet like Earth to have a molten iron core to create a magnetic field that fends off potentially lethal radiation?

"You have to remember that we only have one case so far," Sandford said. "In a situation like that, anything we take as a starting point has the possibility of being fundamentally flawed."

As far as life on Mars, proof -- if it is there -- will probably have to wait for the next trip, scheduled for 2009. Spirit and Opportunity were designed to search for water, and in coming weeks and months they may gather new information to enable scientists to make better guesses about the extent of water on the Martian surface, and how long it was there. But the rovers are not equipped to identify the presence of organic compounds, and so will leave scientists tantalized but unsatisfied.

Of particular interest are the so-called blueberries, tiny spherical grains that contain significant amounts of iron oxide likely to have been formed as minerals that crystallized in water around a central core, then dropped out of the parent rock when it eroded. Opportunity has found blueberries everywhere as it explores Mars's Meridiani Planum.

"The blueberries are more than a third or even more than half hematite [an iron-oxide], but there's also a component we haven't identified," said Ames's Des Marais. On Earth, such pebbles often conceal the fossil remains of microorganisms. Des Marais acknowledged that "that's on the list of possibilities," but it appeared certain that the origin of the blueberries will not be resolved during the current mission. But he agreed with Squyres that Meridiani Planum would be a great place to come back to.
