Mexican Lights Related to Phoenix Lights?

Unexplained phenomenon in the skies over Mexico has some wondering if it is somehow related to Arizona. A Valley man is analyzing the so-called UFO sighting.

The sighting occurred two months ago and was videotaped by pilots with the Mexican military as they flew drug patrols over the state of Campeche.

In the tape, you can hear them counting objects. Ultimately, 11 lights or "orbs" are recorded with a combination of infrared and radar technology.

Jim Dilettoso is a world-recognized expert in video analysis. He got the video from his friend Mexican journalist Jaime Mousson.

Mousson interviewed the pilots who flew that night. The Mexican military reportedly recorded this video of so-called unidentified flying objects.

"A lot of people are saying it's an alien spacecraft," he said. "Well, I'm not saying that. It could be an alien spacecraft. It could be a ... holographic projections, so we have to go measure holographic projections, get the data, compare it and see if it's holographic projections. That's a lot of work."

Dilettoso is putting a lot of work into it to learn what the objects are and are not.

"These are not airplanes, these are not helicopters, these are not balloons," Mousson said. "As sophisticated as our analysis equipment is, it can't get the license plate off these objects. What we can do it extract data and compare it to a lot of known objects and compare it to other unknowns."

The case is getting attention because it comes from the Mexican military and is being compared by investigators worldwide to the Phoenix lights.

The Phoenix lights seen across the Valley in 1997 received international attention as a set of unidentified flying objects.

Dilettoso said his analysis of that sighting and of the latest one out of Mexico have striking similarities.

"The Mexican 11 sighting, the Phoenix light sighting, Fatima and Belgium are now grouped together as examples of some really important light ball phenom that has no physical man-made technology explanation," he said.

Dilettoso isn't quite ready to say what he thinks the orbs are yet.

Later this week, he's expecting to receive the entire 37-minute sighting on tape. At that point, he can do a much deeper analysis.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to Santiago Yturria (syturria@intercable.net), as part of the investigation, the FLIR representative for Mexico, Mr. Gilberto Rocha, was interviewed by Jaime Maussan regarding the images recorded by the FLIR STAR SAFIRE II aboard the Mexican Air Force Merlin airplane during the March 5 , 2004 incident over the Campeche area.

NOTE: The comments and opinions expressed by Mr. Gilberto Rocha are his own personal points of view based on his experience and knowledge of the FLIR STAR SAFIRE II operational functions and do not necessarily represent FLIR Systems, Inc. opinion and points of view.

Question: Mr. Rocha, you just have reviewed some images recorded by the Air Force during an anti-narcotics operation over Campeche on March 5, 2004. What is your opinion about them.

Answer: These are interesting images because they are not common. I will try to explain myself. The human eye perceives certain light frequency that the sun emits. Beyond this frequency the human eye has not the capacity to perceive those images. The infrared source or the infrared rays can only be detected with the FLIR or with special cameras that can detect the infrared radiation.

The equipment that the Air Force is using has the capacity to detect visible images and infrared images. The images that we saw from the Air Force footage correspond to objects that emit temperature, they are emitting heat and they are emitting radiation to the exterior and the camera is reading this.

These images may have low resolution because of the distance that we are measuring but represent round shaped objects that can not be compared to any known object that we have been looking for in the air space.

Question: Could these have been any kind of aircraft ?

Answer. No, because the conventional aircraft have the temperature very well defined in their turbines and in the front where friction is registered therefore they could not be seen as rounded lights.

If we could have a closer image of the objects, perhaps we could have a better definition of the shape of these objects but due to the information we have, these objects are round shaped and we cannot consider them as airplanes.

Question: Any possibility for an helicopter ?

Answer: No, it's the same case: the turbine and blades would be the point of highest temperature defining the shape of the helicopter and it would be always a known shape not of a round-shaped object.

Question: If these objects are not any known aircraft what do you think they are.

Answer: In the strict sense of the word avoiding any distortion or confusion these are objects that fly and we can not identify.

Question: Is it possible that the FLIR could have been giving us false information, that these high temperature readings were non-existent?

Answer: Negative, because in the images we are seeing clouds that have a higher temperature that the ambient average temperature, and we can see the cloud silhouettes because the FLIR is detecting their infrared frequency.

The objects that we are seeing are the points of highest temperature there. Personally, I have never seen anything like this. My experience with these cameras is completely industrial, we analyze a whole variety of industrial appliances as well as the electrical industry but for me the case of the Mexican Air Force is an unsolved case.

Scientists Claim Final Proof of Global Warning

Powerful evidence for global warming has been discovered by scientists funded by the US Government, demolishing the chief argument of sceptics who deny that the phenomenon is real.

A new analysis of satellite data has revealed that temperatures in a critical part of the atmosphere are rising much faster than previously thought, strengthening the scientific consensus that the world is warming at an unnatural rate.

The discovery resolves one of the most contentious anomalies in climate science, which has often been invoked by the Bush Administration to question whether man-made global warming is happening.

While it is generally accepted that surface temperatures are increasing by an average of 0.17C (0.31F) per decade, satellites have been unable to detect a parallel trend in the troposphere ??” the lowest level of the atmosphere, extending 7.5 miles above the ground, in which most weather occurs.

This lack of tropospheric warming has long puzzled scientists, as it is predicted by all the major models of climate change. It has also been seized on by a small but vocal minority of scientists, who have used it to raise doubts about whether global temperatures are rising at all. The enigma, however, has been explained by a team led by Qiang Fu, of the University of Washington in Seattle.

His research reveals that the troposphere is warming almost precisely as the models predict it should: by about 0.2C (0.4F) per decade. Satellites have not previously detected the trend as they have been confused by colder temperatures in the atmospheric layer above.

The findings, details of which are published today in the journal Nature, provide one of the final pieces of proof that global warming is taking place, and that it is a human-induced phenomenon.

Sceptics have often argued that if temperatures are rising at all, this is down to natural variation in the climate as the world emerges from a ???little Ice Age???. The tropospheric trend, however, is precisely what scientists would expect to see if man-made emissions of greenhouse gases were causing it to heat up.

???I think this could convince not just scientists but the public as well,??? Dr Fu said.

Mike Hulme, director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research in Norwich, said: ???It will become that much harder for people to claim that the world isn??™t warming and that the warming isn??™t caused by greenhouse-gas emissions.???

In their study, the Washington team examined atmospheric temperature data collected between January 1979 and December 2001 from satellites operated by the U.S. National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration.

These satellites used instruments known as microwave-sounding units to measure microwave radiation emitted by oxygen molecules, and thus to calculate the temperature.

The raw data for the troposphere, as measured by the instruments??™ channel 2 setting, showed no pronounced warming trend.

Dr Fu realised, however, that about a fifth of the signal picked up on channel 2 in fact originated in the stratosphere ??” the higher level of the atmosphere between 10km and 50km above the Earth??™s surface. This had skewed the data, as the stratosphere is known to be cooling rapidly.

???Because of ozone depletion and the increase of greenhouse gases, the stratosphere is cooling about five times faster than the troposphere is warming, so the channel 2 measurement by itself provided us with little information on the temperature trend in the lower atmosphere,??? Dr Fu said.

His team then used measurements from weather balloons and from another channel on the microwave units to determine precisely how much of the channel 2 signal was coming from the stratosphere.

Once this stratospheric error was eliminated, the remaining data showed that the troposphere had indeed been warming, by about 0.2C (0.4F) a decade.

???This tells us very clearly what the lower atmosphere temperature trend is, and the trend is very similar to what is happening at the surface,??? Dr Fu said.

The new tropospheric data does not suggest that the pace of global warming is increasing or decreasing. The research was funded by the U.S. Government, through the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation and NASA.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates that global temperatures will rise by an average of between 1.4C and 5.8C by the end of the century.

Dr Hulme said that while the results further confirm the overwhelming scientific consensus that man-made global warming is a proven phenomenon, he would be surprised if it were accepted by critics.

???I??™m under no illusions that it will knock down the critics altogether,??? he said. ???In some quarters, people hold almost fundamentalist beliefs that are immune to carefully reasoned argument. A new paper that seems to take the legs away from one of their critiques may unfortunately not make much difference to their arguments.

???It is the totality of the evidence that has convinced the vast majority of experts that the planet is warming: surface temperature recordings, rises in sea level, retreating glaciers, shifting species domains.

???The compendium of evidence from all these different sources means the overwhelming majority of scientists feel justified in warning society about this.???

Lord Hill-Norton 1915 - 20 17643/32970_Hill-Norton.jpg /uforeview.tripod.com/cjimages/Hill-Norton.jpg" title="" alt="" style="width: 255px; height: 300px;" hspace="50" vspace="20" align="right">
I'm sorry to have to report that Lord Hill-Norton died on Sunday, aged 89. Admiral of the Fleet The Lord Hill-Norton G.C.B. was a former Chief of the Defence Staff and Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, who in his later years became greatly interested in the UFO phenomenon.

His long and distinguished naval career included active service on Arctic convoy duty during the Second World War, command of a destroyer during the Suez Crisis, and a later posting in command of the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal.

His interest in UFOs came after his retirement, and he wrote forewords to a number of Timothy Good's books, including Above Top Secret and Unearthly Disclosure. He was particularly interested in the Rendlesham Forest incident, and worked with Georgina Bruni on this. He asked her to draft some questions which he subsequently tabled in Parliament, trying to elicit an official response to what he felt were a number of important defence and national security issues raised by the events.

I briefed him on several occasions, which could be quite challenging. Many staff officers and journalists found him difficult, especially if they didn't quickly get to the point. He was passionate about the Royal Navy, UFOs and a wide range of other subjects. When I called on him last summer, on my way back from a holiday, I found him as lively as ever.

He had taken an interest in a UFO sighting involving military witnesses on HMS Manchester and had asked me to update him. He told me that despite the frustrations, he intended to remain involved in ufology for as long as he was able.

Lord Hill-Norton appeared in several UFO documentaries and was frequently quoted on the subject in the media. Again, he
could be quite outspoken and was often highly critical of the Ministry of Defence's policy on the UFO phenomenon. Those
list members in the UK will be able to see what I believe was his last TV interview on UFOs next Wednesday evening, on
Channel Five's new documentary, The British UFO Files.

Lord Hill-Norton was a great friend to ufology, where the active support of someone of his rank was without precedent. He
will be sadly missed.

- MYSTERIOUS DEATHS DEPARTMENT -

Editor of Infinite Energy 17643/32973_mallove.jpg tp://uforeview.tripod.com/cjimages/mallove.jpg" title="" alt="" style="width: 160px; height: 200px;" hspace="50" vspace="20" align="right">
NORWICH, CT -- Dr. Eugene Mallove, the tireless spokesperson for integrity and honesty in cold fusion research, whose persistent efforts finally persuaded the U.S. Department of Energy to give the phenomenon a second look after 15 years of denial and stonewalling, was killed in Norwich, CT on 14 May 2004. Few facts are known, but preliminary information appears that it may have been a robbery or possibly a landlord-tenant dispute. Local police are still investigating. There is no word on the identity or motives of the assailant(s) and there is no evidence currently of a political connection to his murder.

Dr. Mallove's contributions to Cold Fusion and new energy research cannot be overstated. His passion for integrity and relentless search for the truth goes back to 1989 where he resigned from MIT over manipulation of MIT's test data (to replicate the Pons-Fleischmann experiment) specifically to discredit Cold Fusion.

More than anyone, Dr. Mallove was the public face of Cold Fusion proclaiming at many public appearances the existence of overwhelming peer-reviewed scientifically based evidence for Cold Fusion. Gene, as he was known to his friends and colleagues, was courageous when he stood face-to-face against numerous vocal detractors and skeptics from the mainstream scientific establishment for over a decade. He tirelessly knocked down every hollow argument put forward by skeptics with hard data, logic, and solid research results.

The author of several books, in 1991, he published Fire and Ice, which helped rescue the field of cold fusion from oblivion when it was publicly banished in the public relations scandals after Pons-Fleischman's announcement of Cold Fusion in June 1989.

His greatest accomplishment and legacy will be the 52 bi-monthly magazine issues of Infinite Energy that he founded and edited. Infinite Energy magazine is a compendium of scientific research into all branches of unconventional energy research from contributors around the world. Many of the authors simply couldn't get published elsewhere, but had the courage and foresight to get most papers peer-reviewed before they were published. His magazine has thousands of loyal subscribers from over 40 countries including Russia and China. See www.infinite-energy.com.

Gene traveled to dozens of international conferences, most of the time at great personal sacrifice simply to network with energy researchers and benefactors from around the world. He knew nearly everyone in the unconventional energy community worldwide. Gene has been a champion of cold fusion for many years highlighted by his organizing last summer's successful (International Conference on Cold Fusion) ICCF-10 held in Cambridge, Massachusetts from 24- 29 August 2003. Gene's presence has been the rare voice of scientific reason in a field filled with many phony claims and charlatans. See the web page with the experiments at http://www.lenr-canr.org/Experiments.htm.

Equally significant but perhaps not as well known is the New Energy Foundation, which he founded with the help of a generous wealthy anonymous benefactor. The New Energy Foundation has become a science-based clearinghouse for generating much needed funds for promising energy research leading to commercialization.

His latest triumph was to reverse over a decade of ignorance at Department of Energy by presenting compelling evidence of anomalous reactions of Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR). DOE's decision to review the files on LENR aka Cold Fusion could possibly open a new area of scientific inquiry that has been closed since 1989. This was a triumph not just for Gene personally, but for every scientist who spoke as lone voices in large auditoriums. Gene's voice gave courage to those brave individuals who toiled in their laboratories, struggling to survive with virtually no funding, yet many developed innovative ways produce low energy nuclear reactions. Researchers often put their careers in jeopardy and only approached this field when retirement was assured.

Gene tirelessly climbed every mountain with courage and grace articulating truth in a field meriting serious scientific investigation of anomalous energy phenomena despite constant criticism from ignorant skeptics who refused to examine even the best peer-reviewed data. One of the best examples of his battles was when he reviewed Professor Bob Park's book "Voodoo Science." This bloody battle was over paradigm shifts in science revealing the complete ignorance of Bob Park by his refusal to consider any peer-reviewed data.

"Gene's vision was of a world with abundant energy produced without fossil fuel or nuclear waste. It is now up to us to fearlessly make that vision a reality," is the sentiment of his colleagues who remain.

Police investigate Norwich slaying of N.H. man By Associated Press

NORWICH, Conn. (AP) Police are investigating the killing of a New Hampshire science writer who championed cold fusion.

Eugene Mallove, 56, of Pembroke, N.H., died late Friday night after being assaulted at a house owned by his parents, police said. The family rented out the house.

Mallove died of injuries to his head and neck, the Norwich Bulletin reported Sunday. The office of the chief state's medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.

Mallove was discovered at the house after police received a report of an injured person. An initial investigation indicated a robbery and a fight had taken place, police said. Several unidentified items were taken and Mallove's minivan was missing.

His 1993 green Dodge Caravan was found early Saturday in an employee parking lot at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket. Police were looking for anyone who saw the minivan after 7 p.m. Friday. It had several large bumper stickers on the back, including one advertising his magazine's Web site: www.infinite-energy.com.

Mallove, who moved from Norwich to Bow, N.H., in 1987 and to Pembroke three years ago, was president of the Concord, N.H.-based New Energy Institute and editor-in-chief of its magazine, ''Infinite Energy.''

The magazine's managing editor, who worked with him for six years, called Mallove the ''most caring and giving person I probably have ever known a very successful, brilliant man.''

''It's hard not to love the things he loves because he's so passionate,'' Christy Frazier said. ''He touched the lives of everybody he came in contact with.''

Mallove, who earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. from Harvard University, was chief science writer at the MIT news office until he left to champion cold fusion. He also taught science writing at MIT and Boston University.

He was the author of several books, including one on cold fusion that was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize: ''Fire and Ice: Searching for the Truth Behind the Cold Fusion Furor.''

Mallove believed the infamous Pons and Fleishmann announcement in 1989 that they created nuclear fusion by running an electrical current through a jar of water was not ''voodoo science,'' but a glimpse into an interesting topic worth investigating.

That belief was partly vindicated earlier this year when the U.S. Department of Energy ordered a panel of scientists to review existing research on cold fusion to see whether it is worth pursuing.

''They are now going to do the right thing. It's over 10 years late, no doubt about that, (and) should have been reviewed a long time ago ... but this is a breakthrough,'' Mallove said in a recent interview with The Telegraph of Nashua, N.H.

''There is a huge body of positive evidence'' for low-energy nuclear reactions, he said. ''We have measured tritium (a byproduct of fusion), measured heat multiple ways. ... There are thousands of papers, hundreds of which are bulletproof.''

Mallove's parents, Mitchel and Gladys Mallove, followed him to New Hampshire in 1988. His father died last year after a long illness, but he was still caring for his mother, who has Alzheimer's disease, Frazier said.

He also was survived by his wife, Joanne; a daughter, Kimberlyn; a son, Ethan; and one grandson.

Italian Doctor Says Three Cloned Ba 17643/32971_clone.jpg http://uforeview.tripod.com/cjimages/clone.jpg" title="" alt="" style="width: 300px; height: 215px;" hspace="50" vspace="20" align="right">
ROME - Maverick Italian fertility doctor Severino Antinori said Wednesday at least three babies had been born from cloned embryos in reproduction experiments he had collaborated on.

Antinori, who has made cloning claims in the past, is viewed with skepticism by many scientists and has never produced any evidence for peer review in the area.

In May 2002, Antinori said three women were pregnant with clones, one in her 10th week, one in her seventh and one in her sixth.

In November of the same year, he said a woman pregnant with a cloned embryo was due to give birth in January, but declined to give details about where the birth would take place. He has since refused to talk about it.

When asked Wednesday about the cloning attempts he was involved in, he said: "At least three went well.

"Three were born from nuclear transfer. Nuclear transfer has worked," he said, referring to cloning using an egg cell and an adult cell from another human in much the same way Dolly the sheep, the world's first cloned mammal, was created.

Antinori said he only acted as an "advisor" during the cloning.

"I confirm the facts. I have had information that it happened and I am repeating it," he told a news conference in Rome to announce a congress on reproductive technologies.

Antinori declined to say whether they were multiple births by the same mother or separate births. He said the topic was "too taboo" to talk about.

The doctor gained notoriety in 1993 when he helped a 62-year-old woman give birth using a donor egg after giving her fertility treatment.

Antinori has also worked with U.S.-based fertility expert Panos Zavos who said in January that he had transferred a cloned human embryo into a woman -- news that was greeted with skepticism by the scientific world.

Last year the Raelian movement -- a cult that believes life on Earth was engineered by visitors from outer space -- said it had produced the world's first cloned human, without providing any evidence.

Researchers at Advanced Cell Technology of Massachusetts are the only researchers to publicly show that they have cloned a human embryo to the 16-cell stage.

Teleportation Gets a Quan 17643/32972_teleportation.jpg foreview.tripod.com/cjimages/teleportation.jpg" title="" alt="" style="width: 300px; height: 214px;" hspace="50" vspace="20" align="right">
Teleportation always used to seem so simple. All it took was a quick call to Mr. Scott, and Star Trek's Captain Kirk would be beamed up from the cheap-looking scenery of some alien planet and materialize on the Starship Enterprise.

These days it's all about lasers, subatomic particles and quantum physics, say Australian and Canadian researchers, who have teleported information to more than one place.

They predicted their research would bring unbreakable codes and super-fast computers a step closer.

The Australian National University (ANU) and University of Calgary researchers published their work in a recent issue of the journal Physical Review Letters.

Ping Koy Lam and his team securely teleported a signal to a network of recipients that only a majority could reassemble. Any fewer and the signal could not be reconstructed.

Earlier work at ANU had achieved teleportation. But Ping described the latest work as "a much more complex form of information teleportation in the sense that it involves multiple recipients."

Teleportation is the production, disembodiment and successful reconstruction of a signal. In this case the signal was a high frequency sound to three participants. In the future, the message may be spoken or typed.

The researchers used crystals, lenses, mirrors and lasers to produce a pair of "entangled" particles that can affect each other from afar. These particles are then used to carry fragile information in the form of quantum states.

"These quantum states cannot be measured or copied, making eavesdropping impossible," Lance said. "The transmission of the light beams constitutes a secret communication scheme with guaranteed security."

The process of secret sharing is said to be a fundamental part of present-day telecommunication, computer and banking practices.

"Such network communication can be enhanced using the laws of quantum physics to protect the information, a process called quantum state sharing. The benefit of this technology is that the encrypted message can only be decoded by a majority of recipients.

"For example, if an encrypted message was sent to a spy network containing 15 individuals, a minimum of eight agents would be needed to access the message, limiting the chances of the message being infiltrated or deleted by a double-agent."

Film Crew Documents Tuscola Chief's Big B 17643/32974_thunderbird.jpg /uforeview.tripod.com/cjimages/thunderbird.jpg" title="" alt="" style="width: 250px; height: 83px;" hspace="50" vspace="20" align="right">
FINDLAY, Illinois -- The large "Thunderbirds" return every 27 years to steal away the children of the Cherokee people, according to legend.

On Sunday, Chief John "A.J." Huffer returned to the lake where he claimed to have filmed two such Thunderbirds almost 27 years ago.

Were they really the monstrous predators of Cherokee lore, or were they just turkey buzzards basking in the warmth of summer?

Huffer believes in the former. But a film crew from Canada is trying to separate fact from fiction, and, perhaps, entertain young viewers of the non-fiction show "Mystery Hunters" in the process.

After all, entertainment follows closely behind Huffer, a Tuscola resident and chief of the Illinois Cherokee Band.

"It takes a Cherokee to film a Cherokee legend," said Huffer, 69.

In a deep yet gravely voice, he narrates the story like someone who has told it a thousand times. He probably has.

"I think I have photographed a living legend," he said.

Thus, he boarded a canoe Sunday with 16-year-old Araya Mengesha, one of two "reporters" on the documentary show aired by networks of Discovery Communications Inc.

With a cameraman, sound man, director and production assistant in tow, Huffer and Mengesha paddled across Lake Shelbyville while the chief recalled his tale.

A host of Internet Web sites and books describe how, in the summer of 1977 in Lawndale, a large bird swooped down and momentarily grabbed a young boy by the name of Marlon Lowe.

And rumors soon took wing that the Thunderbirds of old were back again. Of course, a sizeable reward was offered for pictures of them.

Huffer, who had learned to use a 16 mm camera with the U.S. Marine Corps, set out with his son, Jason, on the morning of July 26, 1977.

As they entered a cove near the Findlay marina on Lake Shelbyville, they spied two large birds in a tree. Huffer turned on his camera, the noise of which scared the birds into flight.

He shot about 100 feet of color film. Copies have since been purchased by television producers all over the world.

Huffer estimated the jet-black birds had wingspans of 18 feet and 14 feet, respectively.

Almost 30 years later, the story caught the attention of Montreal-based Apartment 11 Productions, which produces the children's show "Mystery Hunters."

"We're doing legends and myths," said Serge Marcio, director of the Thunderbird segment. "We're into ghost stories."

Mengesha and the rest of the Canadian crew also spent time Sunday in Normal with an Illinois State University professor and bird expert, Angelo Capparella.

After viewing Huffer's film, the professor told the young reporter that the birds probably were just turkey vultures, according to Cassie Fifer of Sullivan, the crew's production assistant, who was recruited for the Illinois shoot.

Marcio said "Mystery Hunters" will leave it up to the viewers to decide.

"There are pros and there are cons," he said. "That's what makes a mystery ??” there are no definite answers."

- TINY BUT MIGHTY DEPARTMENT -

Claim Made For New Form of 17643/32977_nannobacteria.jpg /uforeview.tripod.com/cjimages/nannobacteria.jpg" title="" alt="" style="width: 250px; height: 187px;" hspace="50" vspace="20" align="right">
Doctors claim to have uncovered new evidence that the tiny particles known as "nannobacteria" are indeed alive and may cause a range of human illnesses. The existence of nannobacteria is one of the most controversial of scientific questions - some experts claim they are simply too small to be life forms.

But U.S. scientists report they have now isolated these cell-like structures in tissue from diseased human arteries. Their research is described in the American Journal of Physiology.

The team, led by Dr John Lieske at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, conducted an analysis of calcified and non-calcified arteries, arterial plaques and heart valves collected as surgical waste from two U.S. hospitals.

In the lab, they stained the specimens and examined them under a high power electron microscope.

The team found tiny spheres ranging in size from 30-100 nanometres (nm - billionths of a metre), which is smaller even than many viruses.

When the tissue was broken up, filtered to remove anything more than 200nm and the filtrate added to a sterile medium, the optical density - or cloudiness - of the medium increased.

This, the researchers argue, means the nanoparticles were multiplying of their own accord.

"I think we've taken a systematic approach to evaluating the participation of these potential nanoparticles, nannobacteria - whatever you want to call them - in human disease processes," co-author Dr Virginia Miller, also of Mayo Clinic told BBC News Online.

The particles are also recognised by a dye for DNA and absorbed uridine, a key chemical component of RNA, which the researchers argue is evidence the particles are constantly synthesising nucleic acids.

Viewed with electron microscopy, the particles also appeared to have cell walls.

The nano-scale objects showed up in tissue from patients with calcified arterial aneurysms but not uncalcified samples.

Nannobacteria have been implicated by some scientists in the formation of kidney stones and psammona bodies - calcified (mineralised) structures in ovarian cancer.

But many other scientists dispute that they are actually life forms.

"I don't see any convincing evidence for nannobacteria or DNA [in this study]," Dr John Cisar, of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, US, told BBC News Online.

"If you know you're dealing with a life form, you can use the staining techniques [they used]. But there are false positives in these types of techniques."

Dr Cisar said in research he had conducted, nanoparticles had tested positive with a stain for nucleic acids. But when he and his team tried to extract these nucleic acids, none had been found.

Previous research carried out by Jack Maniloff of the University of Rochester in New York has shown that to contain the DNA and proteins it needs to function, a cell must be a minimum of 140nm across.

"One of the questions we always get back is: 'well, how do you know it's alive if it doesn't have a unique DNA sequence?' This is true," Dr Miller explained.

"But if you go back to how we defined life prior to our knowing about DNA, our criteria was that things multiplied in culture. This is what we have."

In 1996, nannobacteria came to the attention of the world's media when scientists announced they had found fossils in a Martian meteorite of what appeared to be nano-sized bacteria.

Scientists are now involved in efforts to isolate DNA from the nanoparticles. Dr Miller said it was also important to investigate their role in other diseases.

The research is also reported in this week's New Scientist magazine.
