Secret Pentagon Cell Briefed White House on Iraq's 'Imaginary'
Al-Qaeda Links

A Senior Pentagon policy maker created an unofficial "Iraqi intelligence cell" in the summer of 2002 to circumvent the CIA and secretly brief the White House on links between Saddam Hussein and al-Qa'eda, according to the Senate intelligence committee.

The allegations about Douglas Feith, the number three at the Department of Defence, are made in a supplementary annexe of the committee's review of the intelligence leading to war in Iraq, released on Friday.

According to dramatic testimony contained in the annexe, Mr Feith's cell undermined the credibility of CIA judgments on Iraq's alleged al-Qa'eda links within the highest levels of the Bush administration.

The cell appears to have been set up by Mr Feith as an adjunct to the Office of Special Plans, a Pentagon intelligence-gathering operation established in the wake of 9/11 with the authority of Paul Wolfowitz. Its focus quickly became the al-Qa'eda-Saddam link.

On occasion, without informing the then head of the CIA, George Tenet, the group gave counter-briefings in the White House. Sen Jay Rockefeller, the most senior Democrat on the committee, said that Mr Feith's cell may even have undertaken "unlawful" intelligence-
gathering initiatives.

The claims will lead to calls by Democrats for the resignation of Mr Feith, the third-ranking civilian at the Department of Defence and a leading "neo-con" hawk. "Tenet fell on his sword," said one Democrat official, "even though it's clear that he was placed under tremendous pressure to come up with the 'right' intelligence product for the administration on Iraq.

"The testimony to the committee on Feith and other Pentagon officials shows just what kind of pressure was being exerted. And when that didn't work, the Pentagon was just coming up with its own answers and feeding them to the White House. And on al-Qa'eda they got it all wrong."

Last night a senior Pentagon adviser confirmed that Mr Feith was being targeted by senators unhappy that the administration has so far escaped censure for its use of intelligence.

"There are senators who are clearly gunning for Douglas Feith now. This is turning into a classic conspiracy investigation. They want to get Feith and see if, through Feith, they can go up the ladder to even bigger fish."

Mr Feith's role is to be examined further in the second phase of the Senate committee's investigations, which will deal with the Bush administration's use of the intelligence it received. The report by the Republican-dominated committee lambasted the CIA for intelligence failures while concluding that there was no evidence that the Bush administration tried to coerce officials to adapt their findings.

Yet the annexe - written by three leading Democratic senators - contains the strongest evidence yet that Pentagon hardliners sought to sideline the CIA during a drive to talk up a connection between Saddam and Osama bin Laden.

After the September 11 attacks, tension had grown between Pentagon officials and CIA agents, who suspected the Department of Defence of relying too heavily on dubious testimony from Iraqi defectors in order to justify a war against Iraq.

The CIA's investigation of links between Iraq and al-Qa'eda was almost the only aspect of the agency's intelligence-gathering to escape severe censure in the 511-page report. Sen Rockefeller, the senator for West Virginia, said: "Our report found that the intelligence community's judgments were right on Iraq's ties to terrorists. There was no evidence of the formal relationship, however you want to describe it, between Iraq and al-Qa'eda, and no evidence that existed of Iraq's complicity or assistance in al-Qa'eda's terrorist attacks."

Pentagon officials who appeared before the Senate committee testified that Mr Feith and others believed that the CIA was not sufficiently aggressive in its investigation of links between Saddam and al-Qa'eda. During the summer of 2002, administration hardliners believed that evidence of a connection between Iraq and the terrorist organisation would provide a clinching argument for war.

After the publication in June 2002 of a cautious report by the CIA entitled Iraq and al-Qa'eda: A Murky Relationship, Mr Feith passed on a written verdict to the defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, that the report should be read "for content only - and CIA's interpretation should be ignored".

In August 2002, Mr Feith's cell gave a briefing to Mr Rumsfeld and his deputy, Paul Wolfowitz, which included a stinging condemnation of the CIA's intelligence assessment techniques.

In sharp contrast to the Senate intelligence committee's criticisms of "over-reaching" and "exaggeration" by CIA agents, the Pentagon briefing criticised the agency for requiring "juridical evidence" for its findings and for the "consistent underestimation" of the possibility that Iraq and al-Qa'eda were attempting to conceal their collaboration.

In another incident, Mr Feith's Pentagon cell postponed the publication of a CIA assessment of Iraq's links to terrorism after a visit to CIA headquarters at which "numerous objections" were made to a final draft.

In particular, Pentagon officials insisted that more should be made of an alleged meeting between the September 11 hijacker Mohammed Atta and an Iraqi official in Prague in April 2001. The CIA judged reports of the meeting not to be credible, a verdict vindicated on Friday by the Senate committee report.

Most remarkably, on September 16, 2002, two days before the CIA was to produce its postponed assessment, Mr Feith's cell went directly to the White House and gave an alternative briefing to Vice-President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, and to the National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice's deputy.

The briefing contained the section alleging "fundamental problems" with CIA intelligence-gathering. It also gave a detailed breakdown of the alleged meeting between Atta and an Iraqi agent.

The following week, senior Bush officials made confident statements on the existence of a link between Saddam and al-Qa'eda. Mr Tenet would learn of the secret briefing only in March 2004.

Expert: Video of UFO Lights in Mexico Not Fake

Well, the analysis is done and the conclusion on the Mexico 11?

It's not a fake.

The Mexico 11 is a video showing a number of mysterious lights in the skies over eastern Mexico.

One of the world's foremost videotape analysts lives in Phoenix and says what you see in the video tape are unidentified flying objects.

Jim Dilettoso spent more than two weeks with the videotape.

Dilettoso studied the tape "frame by frame" studying each orb to find what he calls the "absolute center."

"So the first thing I did was to enhance the major passages of the video looking for any kind of structure because lights that bright, even on an infrared image, were going to, even for a fleeting moment, cast a light or make heat happen on some kind of structure," he said. "No evidence of structure at all."

The pilots who captured the sighting saw no structure either. In fact, they never saw the lights with their own eyes. They only appear on tape -- recorded with radar and infrared technology.

The pilots, on drug patrol over Campeche, counted 11 bright lights that appear to be flying along with them. When the video was released, some said the lights must be a phenomenon called "ball lightning" -- glowing spheres that result from a lightning strike.

"I've been collecting data in this area for 38 years and I have never heard of anything like this that's related to ball lightning," said Robert Golka, a world-recognized expert on nuclear science and ball lightning. He said what's on the tape is not ball lightning.

"Ball lightning has been seen to bounce on the floor and get smaller each time, each bounce, and then go off with a pop," he said. "Sometimes the whole thing goes at one time in an explosion which can damage things in a room. So if it were that type of phenomenon, I would say yes that would be ball lightning, but this is totally different. These things appeared, disappeared, followed the plane, were invisible to the human spectrum. This has got to be something different or a strange type of ball lightning that we've never heard of before but I kind of doubt that."

Dilettoso begins every project with the idea in mind that such occurrences could be a hoax, and then tries to rule it out.

"We have a number of frames where the light goes off, appears in another spot, moves, and then comes back and locks on again in the same place," he said. "This is happening while traveling at about 200 mph, while the plane is moving at about 200 mph and it's going on for over 30 minutes."

Dilettoso analyzed every frame of the 30-minute tape.

A computer model shows that the mysterious lights are three-dimensional, moving under their own or someone else's control, illuminated from the inside and like no other aircraft known to man.

"It's not like the dome of a car light or a headlight that's flat with light or slightly curved," he said. "This comes out in a complete half circle. That's the primary thing we found. It is kind of weird."

And, it's an unidentified flying object.

Chapel Visitors Are Welcome. Just Don't Expect the Grail

ROSLIN, Scotland - People who work at Rosslyn Chapel have heard it all: how the Ark of the Covenant is concealed in a pillar; how the mummified head of John the Baptist is buried in the floor; how invisible energy lines link the chapel to the site of England's biggest outdoor rock festival.

"I recently had a half-hour conversation with a man from the States who said he had spent some years studying how a particular carving in the chapel aligns with certain planets," said Stuart Beattie, project director for the Rosslyn Chapel Trust. "He was very focused on the theory, though I suspect that he is the only one."

Built in 1446, its walls and ceiling covered with hundreds of exquisite stone carvings, and rich with Christian, pagan and Masonic images, Rosslyn Chapel has always drawn legions of visitors eager to share their creative interpretations of its hidden meanings. But this summer there is a new breed of pilgrim: readers of Dan Brown's theory-spinning "Da Vinci Code," many of them apparently inspired by the book's notion that the chapel hides a secret sign that, if you are very clever, can direct you to
the Holy Grail itself.

These tourists have helped boost visitor numbers to the Episcopal chapel, in the rolling hills of this hamlet six miles from central Edinburgh, by 56 percent in the last month, compared with the same period last year. About 37,000 people came in 2003, and the 6,000 more so far this year appear to rest almost entirely on the runaway success of "The Da Vinci Code," which has remained at or near the top of American best-seller lists for more than a year.

For reasons unknown to the people at Rosslyn (the chapel and the town use historically variant spellings), many of the new tourists seem not only inclined to take "The Da Vinci Code" literally, but also to have read it without proper attention to detail. It does not in fact place the Grail in the chapel, but in another secret location that the hero visits. (A hint for Grail-hunters concerned about
buying plane tickets to the correct European city: Read the epilogue.)

"They come looking for the Holy Grail," said Simon Beattie, who was selling Milky Way bars, Rosslyn Chapel plum jam and books about the Knights Templar alongside copies of "The Da Vinci Code" in the chapel gift shop the other day. "Obviously, it's not here."

Hannah Storie, a co-worker, said she was frequently asked about the alleged Star of David sign in the chapel floor, which Mr. Brown describes as being a crucial clue to the Grail's whereabouts. Perhaps, persistent visitors insist, it is concealed under a carpet.

Nope, Mr. Beattie said at the gift shop. It is not under the floor, and not by the door. "We tell them that the book is a work of fiction, meaning that it isn't true," he said.

Visiting the chapel the other day, Anthony Lewis, a 35-year-old engineer from Bristol, England, certainly hoped it was true. What, he wasn't sure. But something.

"I think there's a code in there," said Mr. Lewis, who says he believes that the Holy Grail explains the mysteries of death and is broken into small pieces that are scattered in sacred hot spots around the world. "Something is probably hidden in there somewhere, and whoever cracks the code will find it."

Mary Fairfield, visiting from Huntington Beach, Calif., said she recently read not only "The Da Vinci Code," but also a book positing that the Knights Templar craftily hid the Ark of the Covenant inside the chapel.

"You never know, in an old building like this, what could be buried here," said her boyfriend, Doug Hart.

Mr. Beattie, the Rosslyn project director, is an old hand at all this. Even before the "Da Vinci Code" tourists arrived, the chapel was a magnet not only for medieval and religious historians and lovers of its extraordinary architecture, but also for a motley crowd of New Age spiritualists, Freemasons, paganists, conspiracy theorists, Knights of Templar fanatics, esoterics tracing the world's hidden energy sources, and people intrigued by its carvings of what appears to be North American corn.

Those carvings are believed to have been made, in true "Chariots of the Gods" fashion, before Columbus set sail and provide grist for a popular local theory that a Scottish nobleman traveled to Nova Scotia early in the 15th century.

"We must enjoy people's ranging views on the chapel," Mr. Beattie said. "We mustn't become too eager to deflate or disabuse them of those views." His indulgence has a hint of the mercenary since the chapel is going through a £4 million refurbishment project, and visitors pay an entrance fee of £5 (about $9). In the chapel, it seems fruitless to argue with visitors bolstered by sheets of runes, geometric diagrams, mathematical formulas, and inside information they say links Rosslyn to everything from Mary Magdalene to the planet Saturn.

"This place is a bit of a hobby of mine," said Peter Snow, an English teacher from Edinburgh, who produced a diagram showing that a giant Star of David could plausibly be constructed by drawing imaginary lines connecting certain points in the chapel to one another. He mentioned with
excitement the cavernous vault containing bodies and sacred treasures that, supposedly, exists under the chapel and has no way in and no way out.

Mr. Snow said he found some the theories in "The Da Vinci Code" intriguing and others annoying. Others take a sterner view. At the University of Edinburgh, Gary Dickson, a reader in history, said he had refused on principle to read the book, intimating that it had contributed to a situation where, as he said, "Rosslyn Chapel, one of the treasures of Pre-Reformation Scotland, has unfortunately become a Mecca for medievalizing fantasists."

As for Mr. Beattie, he sees "The Da Vinci Code" as simply the latest in a series of books that focus attention on the chapel, and is thus inclined not to make too much of it. "I thought it was very well written," he said, "until the end." That part deals with Rosslyn and its link to the Grail.

Speaking of Mr. Brown, Mr. Beattie said his book seemed to end too abruptly. "It was as if he said, 'It's 11:30 now, and I want to go bed,' and then just finished things up."

 - STRANGE CREATURES FROM TIME AND SPACE DEPARTMENT -

Mystery Creature Lurks In Baltimore County Maryland

A Glyndon man found a way to secretly record the beast while it grazed in his yard. For a while it was just lurking in the woods watching the Wroe family until the Wroes started watching it.

Jay Wroe: "My truck was parked here, started getting in my truck. I kind of saw it there where the sunlight is and said what in the world is that?"

Jacob Wroe: "It looked so weird to me. I didn't know what it was."

Wanting to get a better look at the beast stalking his family, Jay Wroe put technology to work for him.

Jay Wroe: "The next day, I hooked up just portable motion detectors, and put them down back in the woods there."

The trap worked.

Jay Wroe: "Very bizarre. I went and got my father and cousin and they came and looked at it and their reactions were pretty much the same -- what in the world are we looking at?"

More than a month after the first sighting, the creature has become a neighborhood regular and showing up often.

Kim Carlsen: "It comes to our house. It's been up in the woods for a while and it comes up through the bottom of our yard and eats our cat food."

Despite the fact it's lurking in these woods and no one knows when or where it will come out, no one here seems afraid of it.

Jacob Wroe: "I don't know, it doesn't look like it's going to harm anybody."

Even the other neighborhood animals like Bullwinkle the dog next door seem okay with the beast.

Kim Carlsen: "It's not afraid of the cats and the cats seem to get along with it fine."

The beast is not shy, and visits most often under bright sun. While no one here knows what it is, they do have a name for it -- the hyote, a combination of a hyena and a coyote.

There may be more than one mystery animal running around Maryland -- there are pictures from a sighting in Harford County.

At the Mathis family's rural home in Joppa, they're used to animals, but not this kind.

"I looked out the window and I saw something drinking out of the water trough," said Lisa Mathis.
"It looked like something out of Lord of The Rings."

"I couldn't figure out what it was," Mathis said. "I though it was a dog and then I looked closer and then I got the camera and pulled it in closer just so I could show the rest of the family."

Mathis's sighting occurred about a year ago. They didn't think much of it until last week when home video of a very similar looking beast appeared on 11 News.

"I saw it and immediately though of this picture that my wife had taken," said Jon Mathis. "(It) looked exactly like the same animal."

On their Harford County land the Mathises have seen all kinds of foxes and other animals running around, but never one like this.

"I'm from New Jersey so I immediately thought it was the Jersey Devil," said Jon Mathis. "In New Jersey folklore, it's a wild beast -- sort of like the abominable snowman."

"My first impression was this was a red fox with sarcoptic mange," said Paul Peditto from the Department of Natural Resources.

With theories running wild, Maryland's Department of Natural Resources says it's very likely a fox, but even they can't be certain.

"We can't discount the possibility that someone had some type of exotic mammal as a pet and released it for whatever reason," said Peditto.

But even with maybe more than one so-called hyote running loose, DNR is going to leave the beast or beasts alone for now.

"We would respond if we knew we had a public safety situation developing," said Peditto. "If we had an animal that was acting in a way that would put people in danger, we would respond immediately."

The only way to find out what the animal is would be to trap it, but DNR says it would only do that if the animal were seen as a threat.

- IS IT HOT IN HERE OR WHAT DEPARTMENT -

The Truth About Global Warming - It's The Sun That's to Blame

Is this the reason for Global warming? The Earth is getting hotter because the Sun is burning more brightly than at any time during the past 1,000 years, according to new research.

A study by Swiss and German scientists suggests that increasing radiation from the sun is responsible for recent global climate changes.

Dr Sami Solanki, the director of the renowned Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Gottingen, Germany, who led the research, said: "The Sun has been
at its strongest over the past 60 years and may now be affecting global temperatures.

"The Sun is in a changed state. It is brighter than it was a few hundred years ago and this brightening started relatively recently - in the last 100 to 150 years."

Dr Solanki said that the brighter Sun and higher levels of "greenhouse gases", such as carbon dioxide, both contributed to the change in the Earth's temperature but it was impossible to say which had the greater impact.

Average global temperatures have increased by about 0.2 deg Celsius over the past 20 years and are widely believed to be responsible for new extremes in weather patterns. After pressure from environmentalists, politicians agreed the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, promising to limit greenhouse gas emissions between 2008 and 2012. Britain ratified the protocol in 2002 and said it would cut emissions by 12.5 per cent from 1990 levels.

Globally, 1997, 1998 and 2002 were the hottest years since worldwide weather records were first collated in 1860.

Most scientists agree that greenhouse gases from fossil fuels have contributed to the warming of the planet in the past few decades but have questioned whether a brighter Sun is also responsible for rising temperatures.

To determine the Sun's role in global warming, Dr Solanki's research team measured magnetic zones on the Sun's surface known as sunspots, which are believed to intensify the Sun's energy output.

The team studied sunspot data going back several hundred years. They found that a dearth of sunspots signalled a cold period - which could last up to 50 years - but that over the past century their numbers had increased as the Earth's climate grew steadily warmer. The scientists also compared data from ice samples collected during an expedition to Greenland in 1991. The most recent samples contained the lowest recorded levels of beryllium 10 for more than 1,000 years. Beryllium 10 is a particle created by cosmic rays that decreases in the Earth's atmosphere as the magnetic energy from the Sun increases. Scientists can currently trace beryllium 10 levels back 1,150 years.

Dr Solanki does not know what is causing the Sun to burn brighter now or how long this cycle would last.

He says that the increased solar brightness over the past 20 years has not been enough to cause the observed climate changes but believes that the impact of more intense sunshine on the ozone layer and on cloud cover could be affecting the climate more than the sunlight itself.

Dr Bill Burrows, a climatologist and a member of the Royal Meteorological Society, welcomed Dr Solanki's research. "While the established view remains that the sun cannot be responsible for all the climate changes we have seen in the past 50 years or so, this study is certainly significant," he said.

"It shows that there is enough happening on the solar front to merit further research. Perhaps we are devoting too many resources to correcting human effects on the climate without being sure that we are the major contributor."

Dr David Viner, the senior research scientist at the University of East Anglia's climatic research unit, said the research showed that the sun did have an effect on global warming.

He added, however, that the study also showed that over the past 20 years the number of sunspots had remained roughly constant, while the Earth's temperature had continued to increase.

This suggested that over the past 20 years, human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation had begun to dominate "the natural factors involved in climate change", he said.

Dr Gareth Jones, a climate researcher at the Met Office, said that Dr Solanki's findings were inconclusive because the study had not incorporated other potential climate change factors.

"The Sun's radiance may well have an impact on climate change but it needs to be looked at in conjunction with other factors such as greenhouse gases, sulphate aerosols and volcano activity," he said. The research adds weight to the views of David Bellamy, the conservationist. "Global warming - at least the modern nightmare version - is a myth," he said. "I am sure of it and so are a growing number of scientists. But what is really worrying is that the world's politicians and policy-makers are not.

"Instead, they have an unshakeable faith in what has, unfortunately, become one of the central credos of the environmental movement: humans burn fossil fuels, which release increased levels of carbon dioxide - the principal so-called greenhouse gas - into the atmosphere, causing the atmosphere to heat up. They say this is global warming: I say this is poppycock."

- ATTACK OF THE GOAT-SUCKERS DEPARTMENT -

Victim Says "Winged Dogs" Were Chupacabras

Juan R. Acuna Pereira, the Parral resident who was assaulted by two strange beings qualified as 'winged dogs' said on Sunday, July 11, 2004 that the creature is identical to one shown in an image presented by Corporacion GEO, depicting the mythical Chupacabras, and which was done based on statements from others who have suffered similar attacks.

"It had no fangs, and it was just like a dog, and with short ears, just like a dog, and it stood on two legs and had shiny eyes," he said, confirming the computerized image belonging to Corporacion GEO.  He insisted that the (creature) is just like a dog and without the fangs shown in a Mexican photo last week.  The only difference is that the beleaguered Parral native saw both animals as black in color and flew around.

Despite his silence to the media, the victim's days haven't been peaceful.  His wife says that Juan doesn't sleep at night and, when he manages to do so, he has nightmares and delirium all night.  Sometimes he wakes up shrieking, "Attack!  Attack!"

What they are hoping is that a (medical) specialist will offer him some assistance, since, after the night of horror, Juan doesn't dare go outside after dark, not even to the outhouse.  He is with someone at all times, whether a brother or his brother-in-law.  He will not remain home alone.

Juan Acuna said that a friend of his, Jorge Vejar, told him a dog was found dead in a field outside Parral, near Temuco in southern Chile, "without a drop of blood."

When they opened the door to see what happened, the other dogs entered the house and hid under the chairs, visibly frightened and unwilling to go outside.

The Chilean newspaper "El Centro" also had access to a report by Susana Soto Yanez, the woman who offered first aid to Acuna" after the attack.

The victim's brother-in-law's spouse revealed that the attack by the creatures occurred near 1 a.m.  Her relative (Acuna) was fleeing from the bridge along the side of the canal, calling for help, at a time at which they were both asleep.

Susana Soto did not understand, much less believe, the story that some winged dogs had attacked her relative.

After changing his clothes and dressing his wounds, because he had arrived practically naked at the house, she went out to find a cell phone to summon an ambulance, without positive results.

She says that she retraced her relative's route from her house to the side of the canal towards the bridge and noticed some strange noises, but she says she entrusted herself to God, and nothing happened.

Unable to achieve her goal, she returned home and asked her husband, he had had a few drinks, she admitted, to go and find an ambulance.  The husband covered the same route as his wife, when upon reaching the bridge, recalls Marcelo Alberto Gajardo, he suffered a surprise attack on his foot by one of the "winged dogs."

He shouted in such a way that he managed to scare off the critter.

Gajardo described the incident: "It was a thing that attacked my foot and hurled me backwards. Good thing I was wearing leather boots.  I looked and saw it was flying.  I let out a shout, and it let go of me. There were two of them.  They were small, but they vanished.  I didn't see if they flew off or not, they just vanished all of a sudden.  If I don't scream, I told myself, I'll die right here...and I don't blame this situation on any rooster!"

- GREAT BALLS OF FIRE DEPARTMENT -

Unusual Fires Start 'Balls of Fire' Rumors

CAIRO - A series of fires in the southern Egyptian province of Sohag has destroyed some 160 houses, giving rise to rumors that spirits are at work or mysterious balls of fire are falling from the sky, a local official said Sunday.

But the causes are mundane -- kerosene stoves, cigarette butts and electrical short circuits, Brigadier Ezzat Aboul Kassem told Reuters. Flaming pigeons,
their feathers set alight in the blazes, may explain talk of balls of fire, he added.

Two children have died in the fires, which started last month, and about 30 people have been injured, either from burns or from smoke inhalation, security officials said.

Aboul Kassem, who is director of police investigations in Sohag, said the number of fires was higher than usual this year, at 25 for the first half of July against 15 in the same period last year, possibly because the weather has been hotter.

"Investigations have shown that there are burned pigeons on top of some of the burned houses and it's probable that they fell there after catching fire at other houses," he said. "Maybe that explains the rumors of balls of fire falling from the sky."
