- THE LINGERING CLOUDS OVER GROUND
ZERO DEPARTMENT -
The Toxic Legacy of 9/11 - By Jenna Orkin

September 11 was a tragedy that
has changed the course of history and the way we live. It was also an
environmental disaster of epic proportions. Hundreds of tons of asbestos
were pulverized and dispersed around Lower Manhattan and beyond. The
tens of thousands of fluorescent lightbulbs each contained enough
mercury to contaminate a quarter of a city block.
The Trade Center's 50,000 computers were each made with four to twelve
pounds of lead. The smoke detectors contained radioactive americium 241.
The alkalinity of the air was equivalent to that of Draino. A month
after the disaster, Dr. Thomas Cahill of the University of California at
Davis found levels of very-fine and ultra-fine particulates that were
the highest he'd ever recorded in the course of taking 7000 samples
around the world, including at the burning Kuwaiti oil fields.1
In addition there were record levels of dioxin, PCBs, and all the other
contaminants one might expect to find when a modern city - which is what
the World Trade Center was - burns for several months. In the words of
Dr. Marjorie Clarke, 9/11 was "equivalent to dozens of asbestos
factories, incinerators and crematoria - as well as a volcano." 2
Nevertheless, beginning on September 13, the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency issued reassurances about the air quality downtown.
A report by the EPA Inspector General released in August, 2003, found
that these pronouncements came about because of interference from the
White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ.) "[B]ased on CEQ's
influence reassuring information was added to at least one press release
and cautionary information was deleted;" Why was the CEQ interfering in
this way? The report states: "[T]he desire to reopen Wall Street [was]
considered when preparing EPA's early press releases." 3
As a result of EPA's reassuring lies, Lower Manhattan reopened with
much fanfare about 'showing the terrorists.' Often, Ground Zero workers
were told not to wear respirators for fear of frightening the public.
Residents removed tons of toxic debris from their homes (some of which
looked like Pompeii) in accord with instructions provided by the New
York City Department of Health: "Use a wet mop or wet rag."4 On October
9, Stuyvesant High School, where this writer's son was a student,
reopened. Flanked by Ground Zero four blocks to the south, Stuyvesant
also had on its north doorstep the main transfer station for the toxic
debris to be carted off to Fresh Kills, Staten Island.
As a result of this placement, Particulate Matter 2.5 - dust that is
small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and not come out again -
was often higher at Stuyvesant than at Ground Zero. Because it is so
small, P.M. 2.5 has a relatively large surface area to volume ratio
which means that the toxic chemicals in the debris would adsorb (i.e.,
be absorbed onto its surface) onto the particles, compounding their
toxicity. High levels of asbestos, lead, tetrachloroethane and
isocyanates were found at the school which had been used as a triage
center but whose ventilation system had not been cleaned prior to the
school's reopening.
Did Bush himself know about the air quality downtown? If he didn't, it
was because he operated on a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy so that the
buck would stop short of him. The fact is: Scientists and other experts
testified early and often on the dangers of the air downtown and the
toxic dust in people's homes. Yet to date all the federal government has
provided is testing with outdated equipment and sometimes untried
protocols; a dangerously flawed and limited cleanup and little or no
health care for the affected community.
The Commission Report deals with the envirodisaster of 9/11 in a
footnote in which they refer to an interview with Sam Thernstrom,
coordinator for the White House Council on Environmental Quality. He
denies changing press releases in order to reopen Wall Street,
explaining that the reasons for the changes were procedural. His story
is corroborated by Christy Todd Whitman who told the initial lies.
John Gotti and Lucky Luciano have got their stories straight. But as
Uncle Remus said, "You can hide the fire but how you gonna hide the
smoke?"
Three years later we are beginning to see the results of the disastrous
policies of the White House which put economic concerns ahead of public
health. Over half of the heroes who toiled at Ground Zero now have
debilitating respiratory symptoms.
Among residents, workers, and the Stuyvesant community are many
illnesses such as new-onset asthma, Reactive Airways Disease, and
chronic bronchitis. Lawyer Robert Gulack, for instance, has suffered
permanent lung damage from his exposure to contamination in the
Woolworth building. And as a dreadful portent of what may be in store
for the community of Ground Zero, fourteen rescue dogs have died.
The White House's actions in response to the environmental aftermath of
9/11 reveal that Osama Bin Laden could not have stumbled on a more
felicitous collaborator than George W. Bush.

SEEKING NEW METHODS OF DOMESTIC SPYING DEPARTMENT -
U.S. Inability To Track
???Undermines??™ Success
![]()
The Pentagon urgently needs a massive effort to develop tools to track
individuals, items and activities in ways that exist today only in
science fiction, a high-level advisory panel recently told U.S. Defense
Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
Technologies that can identify people by unique physical
characteristics ??” fingerprint, voice, odor, gait or even pattern of iris
??” must be merged with new means of ???tagging??? so that U.S. forces can
find enemies who escape into a crowd or slip into a labyrinthine slum.
A Defense Science Board study this summer, ???Transition to and From
Hostilities,??? calls for a new array of intelligence, surveillance and
reconnaissance capabilities.
???The global war on terrorism cannot be won without a ???Manhattan
Project??™-like TTL [tagging, tracking, and locating] program,??? said
briefing charts summarizing some of the study??™s findings. The Manhattan
Project was a top-secret U.S. military-led effort involving many
civilian scientists during World War II to develop the atomic bomb.
Such a focused undertaking could help operations in places like Iraq
and Afghanistan, where enemy leaders do not wear military uniforms and
can easily blend into the civilian population, lose pursuers in
vehicular traffic, and operate from schools, mosques, hospitals and
factories.
Traditional U.S. military intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance
systems from the Cold War and conventional war ???was never designed for
these purposes,??? say the charts, which were used to brief Rumsfeld in
late August.
The objective is to ???locate, identify, and track people, things, and
activities in an environment of one in a million to give the United
States the same advantage in asymmetric warfare it has today in
conventional warfare,??? the briefing charts say.
This tagging and tracking could be used for:
??? People or groups such as enemy leaders or sympathizers, nuclear
weapons or explosives experts, and terrorist paymasters.
??? Things such as weapons of mass destruction, materials or components,
precision machinery, pharmaceutical plants, specialized instruments,
pathogens and seed stocks or vehicles.
??? Activities such as recruiting, financial transactions, Internet
activity, pathogen genome sequencing or organizational activity or
meeting.
These sorts of practices would require the federal government to
wrestle with many legal and ethical issues, as well as jurisdiction and
who pays for such a project.
Whatever the price tag, the stakes are high, the panel said.
???Cost is not the issue; failure in the global war on terrorism is the
real question,??? say the charts.
The Pentagon??™s acting acquisition chief last year outlined the
challenge of dealing with a new kind of threat in a memo establishing a
task force focusing developing identification technologies for the
future.
???One of the most conspicuous lessons learned from our last two wars ??”
Afghanistan and Iraq ??” is that we are not, in general, able to find,
locate, track and either capture or otherwise isolate, key individual
enemy leaders or important packages of material that may have been
dispersed within their country,??? Michael Wynne, the Pentagon??™s acting
acquisition czar, wrote in an October 2003 memo.
???This deficiency,??? Wynne said, ???has fundamentally undermined what
otherwise would have been unquestionable military combat success, has
prolonged the conflict and has denied us important intentional political
objectives.???
Adversaries are developing techniques to counter U.S. locating
capabilities by dispersing and blending into the general populace, Wynne
said. A year ago, for example, Iraqi insurgents launched a missile
attack from a donkey cart against a hotel used by Americans in Baghdad.
The ability to swiftly tell what is and is not a threat ???has immense
implications for our nation??™s economy and security,??? he said.

LITTLE PEOPLE IN THE FAMILY TREE DEPARTMENT -
A Breed Apart - Lost Tribe
of Little People

t-align: justify;">
When Indonesian and Australian archaeologists started to excavate a
limestone cave on the Indonesian island of Flores, they weren't prepared
for what they found, the skeleton of an entirely new species of human,
Homo floresiensis, that lived as recently as 18,000 years ago.
"When we first unearthed the skeleton, I was simultaneously gobsmacked,
puzzled and amused," says geochronologist Professor Bert Roberts, of the
University of Wollongong. "We had been looking for the remains of the
earliest modern humans in Indonesia, so when we found the skeleton of a
completely new species of human, with so many primitive traits and that
survived until so recently, it really opened up a whole can of
prehistoric worms. The discovery of Homo floresiensis was sweet
serendipity."
Peter Brown, an anthropologist from the University of New England in
Armidale, NSW, says: "I would have been less surprised if someone had
uncovered an alien." The discovery at Liang Bua cave, described in
Nature this week, could alter our outlook on our own place in nature.
The discovery raises obvious questions about the diversity of the human
family, such as whether undiscovered human-like species might survive
today. Are we really the sole human custodians of our planet? Could the
existence of Homo floresiensis rehabilitate persistent rumours of
undiscovered human-like species elsewhere, notably the orang pendek of
Malay folklore? Could cryptozoology come in from the cold?
Unlike parts of Indonesia closer to the Asian mainland, far-flung
Flores has been an island for at least a million years. As is the case
with islands elsewhere, the fauna of Flores evolved in its own way,
producing creatures larger or smaller than their mainland relatives: a
looking-glass lost world of tiny elephants, giant rats, Komodo dragons
and even larger, extinct lizards.
This isolation had its effects on the human inhabitants. One of the
most surprising things about the skeleton is its size: in life, no more
than a metre tall, about the same size as one of the giant rats. Living
in a hole in the ground and chased by lizards of mythical proportions,
the creature has, perhaps inevitably, been nicknamed "hobbit" by some of
the researchers - a reference to the tiny, hole-dwelling heroes of The
Lord of the Rings.
For Brown, it was the smallness of the skull that showed that Homo
floresiensis was truly different. When he measured the skull volume and
found it a chimp-sized 380cc, he says his jaw "dropped to my knees.
Small stature is easy to accommodate, but small brain size is a bigger
problem - it still is." And yet these tiny-brained creatures were
skilled enough to make finely crafted stone tools.
The clue to the origin of Homo floresiensis comes from earlier work
suggestive of the presence on Flores of earlier, full-sized prehumans.
Michael Morwood, of the University of New England, was co-director of
the excavation, working closely with R.P Soejono and his team from the
Indonesian Centre for Archaeology in Jakarta. In the mid-1990s, Morwood
and his colleagues unearthed stone tools on the island dating back
800,000 years. The implication was that the toolmakers, presumably Homo
erectus, were capable of navigating the open sea. It is possible that
once marooned on Flores, a population of Homo erectus set its own
evolutionary course, morphing into Homo floresiensis.
When a small population of animals is cut off from a parent population
for an extended period, it follows its own evolutionary course. Size
change is a typical response. Small size is an advantage on isolated
islands, where resources are scarce, so this might have been what
predisposed the inhabitants of Flores towards smallness.
It is hard to comprehend the significance of the survival of such a
strange species of human until what is, in geological terms, a very
recent date. To put this in context, by 18,000 years ago, modern Homo
sapiens had been in Indonesia for at least 20,000 years.
Chris Stringer, of the Natural History Museum in London, says: "One of
the first things I thought of, on learning about the Flores skeleton,
was a possible parallel with the orang pendek (found in Sumatra)." Bert
Roberts offers hints of new discoveries just below the research horizon:
"When I was back in Flores just three weeks ago, Gert van den Bergh
(from the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research at Texel, and the
team's expert on the fossil elephants) and I headed off to a village in
central Flores where we heard the most amazing tales of little hairy
people whom they called ebu gogo: ebu meaning "grandmother" and gogo
"he who eats anything".
???The ebu gogo were short - about a metre tall - long-haired,
potbellied, with ears that stuck out, walking with a slightly awkward
gait, and had longish arms and fingers. They murmured at each other and
could repeat words parrot-fashion. They could climb slender trees but
were never seen holding stone tools, whereas we have lots of
sophisticated artefacts associated with Homo floresiensis. That's the
only inconsistency with the archaeological evidence. Gert had heard of
these stories 10 years ago and he thought them no better than leprechaun
stories - until we unearthed the hobbit." Could the ebu gogo still be
alive? Roberts thinks it is possible.
"The villagers said that the last hobbit was seen just before Dutch
colonists settled that part of Flores in the 19th century," he said,
adding that searches of the remaining rainforest on Flores, and the
caves specifically associated with the ebu gogo stories, could turn up
samples of hair or other material, if not living, breathing specimens.
The possibility of finding ebu gogo alive should not be dismissed as
fantasy, because mammals unknown to science do still turn up - and
South-East Asia is a particular hotspot for such finds. An antelope,
Pseudoryx nghetinhensis, from the Lao-Vietnamese border, was described
as recently as 1993. An ox-like creature, the kouprey, was discovered in
Cambodia in the 1940s.
Morwood and Roberts have targets already in their sights. Many
Indonesian islands contain peculiar faunas and have deep, barely
explored limestone caves. ???Sumba and Sulawesi are high on our hitlist,???
says Roberts. Morwood starts work on Sulawesi next year.
A larger theme raised by the discovery concerns the uniqueness of our
human heritage, something which, in hindsight, has been in question for
decades. Back in the 1960s, the great anthropologist Louis Leakey
speculated that the human lineage had been distinct from that of the
apes for 20 million years or so. In the 1970s, extinct ape-like primates
such as Ramapithecus, living around 10-20 million years ago, were
presumed to lie on the human lineage. But this consensus swept into
reverse with the discovery that Ramapithecus was more akin to
orang-utans ??” and molecular evidence showing that the DNA of humans and
chimpanzees were so similar that a separation of more than 3-5 million
years was ruled out.
But opinions have, slowly, been changing back. The force has come from
the discoveries of extinct members of the human lineage of ever greater
antiquity. Ardipithecus ramidus, discovered in Ethiopia in the mid-1990s
by Tim White of the University of California, Berkeley, and colleagues,
put back the humanchimp divergence to at least 4.4 million years ago. If
this put the molecular evidence under strain, it was snapped by the
discovery in Chad by Michel Brunet of the University of Poitiers,
France, and colleagues of "Toumai" - Sahelanthropus tchadensis, a member
of the human lineage that could be as old as 7 million years. Leakey
has been partially vindicated, with the effect that our own complacency
at our distinctiveness with respect to the animal world has been
reinforced.
By the same token, evidence for the diversity of human species through
time has been downplayed, first by the cultural inertia of stories of an
upwards progression towards the human state; second, by the curious
chance that Homo sapiens happens to be the only species of human around
today - a situation probably unprecedented in 7 million years.
The evidence for the coexistence of humans and Neanderthals in Europe
for at least 10,000 years until Neanderthals disappeared around 30,000
years ago, and the fact that anthropologists have known for years of the
multiple lineages of prehumans living in Africa between 4-2 million
years - has done little to dent the robust idea that humans are so
distinct from the rest of the animal world that they rule the earth by
virtue of inherent perfection, or divine fiat.
The Flores finds could change all that with a single stroke.
For one thing, they underscore the fact of human diversity until very
recent times. "Maybe little folk from Flores will hammer the point home
more effectively because they are so different in anatomy but so close
in time," says Tim White. "How will the creationists cope?"
For another, the evidence challenges the human-centric idea that humans
characteristically modify their surroundings to suit themselves, rather
than allowing natural selection to adapt them to their environment. If
the Flores skeleton is evidence of the kind of evolutionary size change
more associated with animals such as rats and elephants, this, says
Brown "is a clear indicator" of human-like creatures "behaving like all
other mammals in terms of their interactions with the environment".
"Darwin and Wallace would be pleased," adds White. "What better
demonstration that humans play by the same evolutionary rules as other
mammals?"
Of perhaps more current concern to anthropologists is the degree to
which Homo floresiensis, with its small stature and - especially - tiny
brain, will force a redefinition of humanity, at least in terms of
anatomy. "I think the discovery challenges the very notion of what it is
to be human," says Stringer.
"Here is a creature with a brain the size of a chimpanzee's, but
apparently a tool-maker and hunter, and perhaps descended from the
world's first mariners. Its very existence shows how little we know
about human evolution. I could never have imagined a creature like this,
living as recently as this."
Russell Ciochon, a paleoanthropologist from the University of Iowa,
says: "I suspect that creationists will act very negatively toward this
discovery. It shows that humans were not alone. There may be other
dwarfed species lurking in the caves of other isolated islands. Each new
discovery will subtract some essence from the uniqueness of humans. I
wonder if this discovery might even be discussed in our current
political campaign? It is no secret that Bush is anti-evolution. If he
is smart, he will not touch this one."

MYTHS BECOME REALITY DEPARTMENT -
Could
29116/53095_ebugogo.jpg
>

When I was back in Flores
earlier this month we heard the most amazing tales of little, hairy
people, whom they called Ebu Gogo - Ebu meaning grandmother and Gogo
meaning 'he who eats anything'. The tales contained the most fabulous
details - so detailed that you'd imagine there had to be a grain of
truth in them.
One of the village elders told us that the Ebu Gogo ate everything raw,
including vegetables, fruits, meat and, if they got the chance, even
human meat.
When food was served to them they also ate the plates, made of pumpkin
- the original guests from hell (or heaven, if you don't like washing up
and don't mind replacing your dinner set every week).
The villagers say that the Ebu Gogo raided their crops, which they
tolerated, but decided to chase them away when the Ebu Gogo stole - and
ate - one of their babies.
They ran away with the baby to their cave which was at the foot of the
local volcano, some tens of metres up a cliff face. The villagers
offered them bales of dry grass as fodder, which they gratefully
accepted.
A few days later, the villagers went back with a burning bale of grass
which they tossed into the cave. Out ran the Ebu Gogo, singed but not
fried, and were last seen heading west, in the direction of Liang Bua,
where we found the Hobbit, as it happens.
When my colleague Gert van den Bergh first heard these stories a decade
ago, which several of the villages around the volcano recount with only
very minor changes in detail, he thought them no better than leprechaun
tales until we unearthed the Hobbit. (I much prefer Ebu as the name of
our find but my colleague Mike Morwood was insistent on Hobbit.)
The anatomical details in the legends are equally fascinating. They are
described as about a metre tall, with long hair, pot bellies, ears that
slightly stick out, a slightly awkward gait, and longish arms and
fingers - both confirmed by our further finds this year.
They [the Ebu Gogo] murmured at each other and could repeat words
[spoken by villagers] verbatim. For example, to 'here's some food', they
would reply 'here's some food'. They could climb slender-girthed trees
but, here's the rub, were never seen holding stone tools or anything
similar, whereas we have lots of sophisticated artefacts in the H.
floresiensis levels at Liang Bua. That's the only inconsistency with the
Liang Bua evidence.
The women Ebu Gogo had extremely pendulous breasts, so long that they
would throw them over their shoulders, which must have been quite a
sight in full flight.
We did ask the villagers if they ever interbred with the Ebu Gogo. They
vigorously denied this, but said that the women of Labuan Baju (a
village at the far western end of Flores, better known as LBJ) had
rather long breasts, so they must have done.
Poor LBJ must be the butt of jokes in Flores, rather like the Irish and
Tasmanians.
A local eruption at Liang Bua (in western Flores) may have wiped out
local hobbits around 12,000 years ago, but they could well have
persisted much later in other parts of the island. The villagers said
that the last hobbit was seen just before the village moved location,
farther from the volcano, not long before the Dutch colonists settled in
that part of central Flores, in the 19th century.
Do the Ebu Gogo still exist? It would be a hoot to search the last
pockets of rainforest on the island. Not many such pockets exist, but
who knows. At the very least, searching again for that lava cave, or
others like it, should be done, because remains of hair only a few
hundred years old, would surely survive, snagged on the cave walls or
incorporated in deposits, and would be ideal for ancient DNA analyses.
Interestingly, we did find lumps of dirt with black hair in them this
year in the Hobbit levels, but don't know yet if they're human or
something else. We're getting DNA testing done, which we hope will be
instructive.

MYSTERIOUS LAKE BEASTS DEPARTMENT -
Family Videos What
29116/53089_ogopogo.jpg
>

A video showing a long,
writhing shape in Okanagan Lake is being investigated as a possible
Ogopogo sighting
John Casorso and his family rented a houseboat to spend some quiet time
on the lake, but ended up with intriguing video footage of something
mysterious in the water
On Aug. 9, at 7:30 a.m., he said the houseboat started rocking back and
forth fiercely. The rocking woke up the family, who ventured to the top
deck to see what was happening. When Casorso reached the deck, he said
he was shocked to see something swimming away from the boat. "The only
reason we noticed it is because it passed underneath the houseboat,"
said Casorso. "We could really feel the power and size of what it was."
Casorso acted quickly, retrieving his video camera to get footage of the
creature. He has a total of approximately 15 minutes of video footage
that clearly shows a calm lake, no boat movement and a long, dark hump
rising above the water
Casorso said what he saw looked to be about 15 metres long, and there
may have been more than one
"It seemed like, on one occasion, there was at least one parallel to
the larger one and at least one behind it," he said. "It couldn't have
been a wave because it wasn't dissipating. It remained in the same area
for over 10 minutes." Asked why he decided to wait so long to let the
public know about his sighting, Casorso said he took the advice of local
Ogopogo expert Arlene Gaal
"I showed her, and she said we should take it slow," said Casorso. "I
also didn't want to rush into it too quickly because over the years lots
of people have gotten pictures or footage and the response is not always
favourable." Gaal, a chronicler of Ogopogo sightings and an author on
the subject, said she believes Casorso has an interesting video and has
caught on tape what many people believe to be Ogopogo
"I feel that John has some really good footage that adds to solving the
puzzle and mystery of Ogopogo," said Gaal. According to Gaal, there have
been nine reported sightings this year, and she suspects there have been
more that were not reported due to the ridicule factor surrounding such
a story
Casorso also followed Gall's advice to copyright the video
He showed it to a few friends first, to get their opinion, and said he
enjoyed seeing their reactions. "One thing I like about the video is
that it's poor quality at first, but then it gets very clear and people
always say, `Wow, what is that?' when they realize there is more there
than just wave," Casorso said
Janet Courtney was one of the people to see the video, and she says
it's convincing
"I believe anything is possible," said Courtney. "But after seeing the
video, I'm convinced that there is something there, for sure." Daily
Courier news editor Jon Manchester said he's usually skeptical about
Ogopogo sightings, but was perplexed after viewing Casorso's video. "I
don't know how to describe it . . . I know I saw something, I don't know
what, and it was more than a log floating in the water. It's by far the
most convincing Ogopogo evidence I've ever seen." Casorso has lived in
the Okanagan all his life and always thought there was some merit to the
Ogopogo legend
"I would always carry on with my kids that we would see Ogopogo," said
Casorso. "We were pretty excited when something actually happened
because you never expect to actually see it."

Scientists Zero in on W

The big bang could be a normal
event in the natural evolution of the universe that will happen
repeatedly over incredibly vast time scales as the universe expands,
empties out and cools off, according to two University of Chicago
physicists.
"We like to say that the big bang is nothing special in the history of
our universe," said Sean Carroll, an Assistant Professor in Physics at
the University of Chicago.
Carroll and Chen's research addresses two ambitious questions: why does
time flow in only one direction, and could the big bang have arisen from
an energy fluctuation in empty space that conforms to the known laws of
physics?
The question about the arrow of time has vexed physicists for a century
because "for the most part the fundamental laws of physics don't
distinguish between past and future. They're time-symmetric," Carroll
said.
And closely bound to the issue of time is the concept of entropy, a
measure of disorder in the universe. As physicist Ludwig Boltzmann
showed a century ago, entropy naturally increases with time. "You can
turn an egg into an omelet, but not an omelet into an egg," Carroll said.
But the mystery remains as to why entropy was low in the universe to
begin with. The difficulty of that question has long bothered
scientists, who most often simply leave it as a puzzle to answer in the
future. Carroll and Chen have made an attempt to answer it now.
Previous researchers have approached questions about the big bang with
the assumption that entropy in the universe is finite. Carroll and Chen
take the opposite approach. "We're postulating that the entropy of the
universe is infinite. It could always increase," Chen said.
To successfully explain why the universe looks as it does today, both
approaches must accommodate a process called inflation, which is an
extension of the big bang theory. Astrophysicists invented inflation
theory so that they could explain the universe as it appears today.
According to inflation, the universe underwent a period of massive
expansion in a fraction of a second after the big bang.
But there's a problem with that scenario: a "skeleton in the closet,"
Carroll said. To begin inflation, the universe would have encompassed a
microscopically tiny patch in an extremely unlikely configuration, not
what scientists would expect from a randomly chosen initial condition.
Carroll and Chen argue that a generic initial condition is actually
likely to resemble cold, empty space-not an obviously favorable starting
point for the onset of inflation.
In a universe of finite entropy, some scientists have proposed that a
random fluctuation could trigger inflation. This, however, would require
the molecules of the universe to fluctuate from a high-entropy state
into one of low entropy-a statistical longshot.
"The conditions necessary for inflation are not that easy to start,"
Carroll said. "There's an argument that it's easier just to have our
universe appear from a random fluctuation than to have inflation begin
from a random fluctuation."
Carroll and Chen's scenario of infinite entropy is inspired by the
finding in 1998 that the universe will expand forever because of a
mysterious force called "dark energy." Under these conditions, the
natural configuration of the universe is one that is almost empty. "In
our current universe, the entropy is growing and the universe is
expanding and becoming emptier," Carroll said.
But even empty space has faint traces of energy that fluctuate on the
subatomic scale. As suggested previously by Jaume Garriga of Universitat
Autonoma de Barcelona and Alexander Vilenkin of Tufts University, these
flucuations can generate their own big bangs in tiny areas of the
universe, widely separated in time and space. Carroll and Chen extend
this idea in dramatic fashion, suggesting that inflation could start "in
reverse" in the distant past of our universe, so that time could appear
to run backwards (from our perspective) to observers far in our past.
Regardless of the direction they run in, the new universes created in
these big bangs will continue the process of increasing entropy. In this
never-ending cycle, the universe never achieves equilibrium. If it did
achieve equilibrium, nothing would ever happen. There would be no arrow
of time.
"There's no state you can go to that is maximal entropy. You can always
increase the entropy more by creating a new universe and allowing it to
expand and cool off," Carroll explained.

GHOSTLY TALES IN YOUR TOWN DEPARTMENT -
Spooky Sights, Sounds
Glenn Wershing says he believed his house in New Jersey was haunted the
moment he moved in with his wife and three children in 1961.
"On the third floor, we would hear footsteps going from the back of the
house to the front of the house, then a big thump," Mr. Wershing
explains. "I think I must have run upstairs a hundred times with a
flashlight to see who or what was there, but I never found anything."
Mr. Wershing, 76, and his wife, Jackie Wershing, 71, live in the Thomas
P. Hunt house, a three-story farmhouse built in 1835 that runs along
Bear Creek, which adjoins the property.
The couple has noted numerous incidents that suggest the lingering
presence of a ghost or some unearthly being. One Christmas, for example,
Mrs. Wershing took a photo of her three children around the living-room
Christmas tree. When the photo was developed, it appeared that the
dismal figures of three other children ??” in shadowy form ??” were present,
as well.
The couple is among the 40 percent of Americans who believe that a
place can be haunted. According to a Gallup poll in 2001, this
percentage is up from about 29 percent 10 years earlier.
"You never know when these weird things will start happening, but the
change in seasons is usually a good indication" Mrs. Wershing said. "It
was bitter cold one night, and I awoke at about five in the morning.
There, standing in front of Glenn's dresser was a lady with extremely
long hair, wearing a nightgown of some sort. I just barely opened my
eyelids, straining to try and see a face, but absolutely nothing was
reflected in our bedroom mirror."
Mr. Wershing suggests that the people who lived in the house prior to
them just weren't ready to go yet: "It wasn't like there was a murder
here or anything like that. Years ago, it was commonplace for people to
die in their homes. I've said I don't believe in ghosts, but something
is happening in this house."
The Wershing household is one of dozens of eerie phenomena compiled in
"Weird U.S.: Your Travel Guide to America's Local Legends and Best Kept
Secrets." The new book collects tales of the unexplained from across the
country ??” including such Washington-area legends as the Goatman and
"Crybaby Bridge."
Joe Nickell, investigative columnist for the Skeptical Inquirer, says
this belief in the paranormal taps into the hopes and fears of the
American people.
"Psychic power lets us look into the future, aliens and UFOs reassure
us that we are not alone in this universe, and ghosts give us the
message that there's something to look forward to after death," Mr.
Nickell said. "There's no objective or scientific evidence for ghosts.
I've come to believe that it's not the places that are haunted. It's the
minds of the people."
Haunted sites like the Martha Washington Inn in Abingdon, Va., however,
continue to attract ghost-believing visitors each year, asking about the
haunted history of the Inn, and the supposed ghost of a young nurse
named Beth who haunts the Inn's premises. Pete Sheffey, a bellman at the
inn, claims to have seen a lot of strange things throughout his 40 years
of employment there.
"Our guests sometimes hear the sound of violins coming from the upper
floors, but there is no one playing," said Mr. Sheffey, 63. "This is the
ghost of Beth, who lived here during the Civil War, when the inn was a
hospital. Last week, one guest saw [Beth's] feet moving down the hall
... then, they just vanished right in front of her. Some guests don't
believe in the ghost stuff when they arrive, but by the time they leave,
they do."
D.C. resident Steve Cupo, 50, said he had his own personal encounter
with a ghost sighting. Mr. Cupo was a lead actor in "Give My Regards to
Broadway" at the Circuit 21 Dinner Theatre in Rock Island, Ill., in 1981
when he saw the ghost of a deceased janitor sitting in the balcony.
"It was during rehearsal, and I had just run up to a very high platform
on the stage," Mr. Cupo said. "We had to stop the performance for some
reason, and as I was glancing around the auditorium, I saw a strange
Portuguese man in overalls sitting in the balcony. I looked away for a
minute, but as soon as I looked back, he was gone. One week later,
people were talking about this ghost of a Portuguese janitor, who
accidentally killed himself in the theatre in 1922, and now he haunts
the place."
"Weird U.S." also highlights stories of "bizarre beasts," including the
infamous Goatman of Prince George's County.
The Goatman is described as a half-man, half-goat creature, whom local
lore blames for attacking cars left near the road and throwing dogs off
Interstate 495 overpasses near secluded areas.
Since the late 1950s, the Goatman has left his mark on the front page
of two issues of the Prince George's County News. The Nov. 10, 1971,
edition carried a front-page banner declaring "Residents Fear Goatman
Lives: Dog Found Decapitated in Old Bowie" with a photo of the remains
of the mutilated pet. The canine victim's owners reportedly had heard
strange noises and saw an "animal-like creature" moving in the dark
right before the dog disappeared.
According to some area residents, the Goatman lives near a notorious
Prince George's County site, Crybaby Bridge in Upper Marlboro.
At Crybaby Bridge, passing motorists say they have heard either the
shrill cry of an infant ghost ??” local legend says it's the spirit of a
baby who was thrown over the bridge by her ashamed, murderous mother ??”
or the Goatman, stealthily awaiting his next victim.
Mark Moran, co-author of "Weird U.S.," said he and co-author Mark
Sceurman took about a year to travel nationwide to investigate and
research these, and many other, haunted places nationwide, many of which
were "tips" from readers. After they published "Weird NJ" ??” a
compilation of spooky tales from New Jersey ??” in 2003, the authors began
receiving letters from across the country, telling them strange tales
from their home states.
"What we do is listen to what people tell us is weird about their own
hometown," Mr. Moran said. "I don't know if these stories are fact or
fiction, but what I do believe is that the people who tell us their
story truly believe it."
