The Secret CIA UFO Files

The Central Intelligence Agency says it has finally come clean about UFOs. To absolutely no one's surprise, it knew more than it ever let on.

"Over half of all UFO reports from the late 1950s through the 1960s were accounted for by manned reconnaissance flights," says Gerald K. Haines, a historian for the National Reconnaissance Office who studied secret CIA UFO files for an internal CIA study that examined the spy agency's involvement in UFOs through the 1990s.

Why lie about UFOs? "The Soviets could use UFO reports to touch off mass hysteria and panic in the United States and overload the U.S. air warning system so that it could not distinguish real targets from phantom UFOs," Haines says.

If Cold War hysteria seems to be a less than satisfactory explanation, perhaps it is because there really is more to the story.

POPULAR MECHANICS has learned from nonclassified sources that the United States had a serious reason for wanting the public to keep believing that the strange lights in the sky were of unearthly origin. The government kept the UFO myth alive to disguise the embarrassing fact that during the hottest days of the Cold War, America's two most secret intelligence gathering assets??“the A-12 and SR-71 spyplanes??“flew toward hostile terrain with the equivalent of cow bells dangling from their necks.

The deception of the public began in the early 1950s. It involved the then highly secret, and to this day little-known, A-12. If you think you saw an SR-71 Blackbird at an air and space museum, the odds are you were actually looking at an A-12. The idea for the plane was conceived in 1954 by CIA director Allen Dulles. The objective of this secret program, according to aviation historian Paul F. Crickmore, was to build a spyplane capable of flying higher and faster than the U-2.

The secret development program, which was originally called Project Aquatone, and then Gusto and then Oxcart, led to the first A-12 mockup. It became connected with UFO lore in late 1959 when, according to Crickmore, it was trucked from the famous Lockheed Skunk Works, in Palmdale, California, to Groom Lake, Nevada. (Also known to UFO enthusiasts as Area 51, this formerly secret test site is located about 100 miles north of Las Vegas, Nevada.) Hidden in the desert and surrounded by then active Atomic Energy Commission testing grounds, the A-12 mockup underwent a series of tests to determine and then reduce its ability to deflect and absorb radar signals. The CIA liked what it saw and ordered a dozen.

Lockheed had built what to this day is considered the most amazing aircraft of all time. But before it could fly, it needed engines that could propel the plane to Mach 3.2 and an altitude of more than 97,600 ft. In February 1962, Pratt & Whitney announced its already overdue J58 engines could not be delivered anytime soon. As an interim solution, they offered less powerful J75 engines that, according to Crickmore, would take the A-12 to about 50,000 ft. and a speed of Mach 1.6. CIA engineers accepted the offer after calculating that an A-12 equipped with a pair of J75 engines should be able to fly faster than Mach 2. The radar-deflecting shapes of the F-117A (top) and SR-71 (above) lend themselves to misinterpretations as UFOs.

"In order to placate the directors who controlled the agency's purse strings, [Lockheed test pilot] Bill Park dived an A-12 to Mach 2," says Crickmore. "[It] relieved some of the high-level pressure on the design team." Without intending to, Park also opened a new chapter in UFO history.

One of the features about UFO sightings that has consistently baffled the experts is their apparent ability to swoop downward, hover and then soar into the sky at impossible speeds.

Viewed head on, this is exactly how an A-12 or an SR-71??“its J58-powered successor??“appears to move at times during a normal flight. The maneuver is called a "dipsy doodle."

Col. Richard H. Graham, who commanded the U.S. Air Force 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing and has written a history of the SR-71 titled SR-71 Revealed, recently explained the dipsy doodle to PM. The pilot begins by climbing to about 30,000 ft. with the afterburners glowing. At about 33,000 ft., with the plane at Mach .95, he noses the aircraft over. Heading down at a pitch as great as 30 degrees, the plane falls as fast as 3000 ft. per minute. After 10 to 20 seconds, the pilot pulls out of the dive, then accelerates skyward at more than twice the speed of sound.

There is one more very UFO-like characteristic of the SR-71: The glow of its exhaust periodically turns green.

The SR-71 burns fuel modified to withstand high temperatures. It doesn't light easily. "One early 'hiccup' was ignition," Crickmore recalls. "The [J58] engine would not start no matter what procedure was tried."

Eventually the problem was solved by the introduction of a chemical that explodes on contact with the atmosphere. Graham says it must be introduced into the engine when it is started, and it also kicks-in the afterburners. This happens after each aerial refueling, which, given the SR-71's enormous thirst, is quite often. Each time, it produces another image that could be misinterpreted as a UFO??“flashing colored lights.

The green flash and distinctive dipsy doodle can be spotted from miles away. Observing the pattern created by these strange sights provides a map to the SR-71's target area, giving those on the ground enough time to hide whatever the spyplane has been sent to photograph.

Curiously, the ebb and flow of UFO sightings in the Southwest correspond with the comings and goings of secret aircraft. Some of the most intense UFO spottings coincided with the testing of the F-117A stealth fighter, which was stationed just west of Area 51. These may account for the yet unexplained sightings.

What better way to hide extraordinary aircraft than to wrap them in the compelling fiction of aliens?

Nobel Prize Winner Has Strange Encounters
36701/64851_mulliskary.jpg iskary.jpg" title="" alt="" style="width: 225px; height: 222px;" hspace="50" vspace="30" align="right">
Editor??™s Note: This article is a supplement to Bill Chalker??™s ???Strange Evidence??? published in the Spring 1999 International UFO Reporter, which recounts the details of an Australian abduction case that yielded a strand of apparent alien hair suitable for mitochondrial DNA analysis. The results were surprising, yielding a DNA sequence that was human, though very rare.

Here Bill Chalker describes the bizarre experiences of Kary Mullis, winner of the 1993 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his invention of a process that allows scientists to identify a fragment of DNA genetic code and then reproduce it in very large quantities. The DNA procedure described in the IUR article was made possible by Mullis??™s discovery.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On a Friday night in April 1983, Dr. Kary Mullis, a biochemist, was driving up to his cabin in Mendocino county in northern California. During that drive to his Anderson Valley cabin Mullis conceived one of the great discoveries of modern chemistry??”the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a surprisingly simple method for making unlimited copies of DNA, thereby revolutionizing biochemistry almost overnight.

Kary Mullis described his discovery in Scientific American (???The Unusual Origin of the Polymerase Chain Reaction,??? April, 1990). He was awarded the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery.

On another Friday night, during the summer of 1985, Kary Mullis drove up to his cabin. Arriving around midnight after driving for about three hours, Mullis dumped groceries he bought on the way, switched on the lights (powered by solar batteries) and headed, with flashlight in hand, to the outside toilet located about 50 feet west of the cabin. He never got there that night.

Quoting from his 1998 book Dancing Naked in the Mine Field, Mullis encountered something extraordinarily weird on the way. ???...at the far end of the path, under a fir tree, there was something glowing. I pointed my flashlight at it anyhow. It only made it whiter where the beam landed. It seemed to be a raccoon. I wasn??™t frightened. Later, I wondered if it could have been a hologram, projected from God knows where.???

???The raccoon spoke. ???Good evening, doctor,??™ it said. I said something back, I don??™t remember what, probably, ???Hello.??™ The next thing I remember, it was early in the morning. I was walking along a road uphill from my house.???

Mullis had no idea how he got there but he was not wet from the extensive early morning dew. His flashlight was missing. He was never able to find it. He had no signs of injury or bruising. The lights of the cabin were still on, along with the groceries on the floor. Some six hours had gone by unaccounted for. Later in the day he found that an area of his property??”???the most beautiful part of my woods?????”had inexplicably become a place of dread.

A year or so later Mullis exorcised this fear John Wayne-style by shooting the wood up. While his attempt at psychotherapy proved successful it did not help him find out what had happened that night in the summer of 1985. Mullis would become the only known Nobel prize laureate to claim an experience of what might be an alien abduction.

Kary Mullis describes himself as ???a generalist with a chemical prejudice.??? Others have described him as ???Hunter Thompson meets Stephen Hawking??? or ???the world??™s most eccentric and outspoken Nobel Prize-winning scientist.??? It is not easy to dispose of Mullis??™s experience as a drug or alcoholic hallucination. For one, he was not affected by either that midnight. Plus, he has not been the only one to have experienced strange events at the cabin.

His daughter, Louise, disappeared for about three hours after wandering down the same hill. She also reappeared on the same stretch of road. Her frantic fiancée was about to call the local sheriff. Mullis had told no one of his experience until his daughter called to tell him to buy Whitley Strieber??™s Communion. She was ringing to also tell her father about her strange experience. By coincidence when she rang, Mullis had already been drawn to the book and was up to the point where Strieber reports strange ???owls??? and little men entering his house.

In his own book Mullis concluded, ???I wouldn??™t try to publish a scientific paper about these things, because I can??™t do any experiments. I can??™t make glowing raccoons appear. I can??™t buy them from a scientific supply house to study. I can??™t cause myself to be lost again for several hours. But I don??™t deny what happened. It??™s what science calls anecdotal, because it only happened in a way that you can??™t reproduce. But it happened.???

Kary Mullis confirmed all this and more when I spoke with him recently. Another person encountered a ???glowing raccoon??? between the cabin and the toilet. This was a friend of Mullis who did not know of the ???raccoon??? story and was a first-time visitor, during a party at the cabin after the announcement of the Nobel Prize win in 1993. This man did not stick around and fled up the hill towards the house.

On the way he encountered a small glowing man, which then suddenly enlarged into a full sized man who said something like, ???I??™ll see you tomorrow.??? The man, who was not experiencing a drug or alcohol-induced hallucination left with a friend without informing anyone. They returned to their hotel at a nearby town. That night the man inexplicably found himself outside in the hotel car park troubled and terrified by the impression he had somehow been back at the Mullis cabin.

He and his friend returned the following night to the cabin. The celebratory party was carrying on from the previous night. As the man arrived he was shocked to see the ???full-sized man??? seen as an enlarging apparition the night before drive up in a car. This was too much for the first time visitor. He left in a panic, holding Mullis somehow responsible for the previous nights events.

Sometime later in tears he revealed the full story to Mullis, who identified the man his friend he had seen as his elderly neighbor. Mullis checked with his neighbor and sure enough he had come to the party on the second night, arriving to be seen by the terrified visitor. However he was certain he was not there on the first night, not in person and not lurking as a glowing raccoon or a small glowing man that enlarged into a vision of himself. There is more but that can perhaps wait for another more detailed telling.

Given this sort of activity on his property it perhaps isn??™t surprising that Kary Mullis told me he thinks the nature of his experience is even stranger than abducting ETs. Instead he speculates about multi-dimensional physics (a la Michio Kaku??™s Hyperspace, 1994) at a macrocosmic level, ???like anything can god-damn happen and the speed of light is not really the limit in terms of interactions with other cultures or whatever.

This stuff about grabbing people or subjecting them to all kinds of experiments??”it??™s just anthropology at a level we don??™t understand quite yet.??? As for PCR testing of biological samples from abductee experiences he indicated, ???You might imagine that I thought of that myself. As for instance in ???you can have some of mine, if I can have some of yours.

??™??? He would like to look at this work, however he feels that the idea of an alien culture needing our DNA to survive is very unlikely and a program on the scale and nature of David Jacobs??™s The Threat improbable. Any culture that could conquer the barrier of space-time could have easily conquered the far simpler problems of complex biochemistry and would not need us in the manner described in the grey alien-human ???hybrid??? agenda theories.

- PSYCHIC GAMES GOVERNMENTS PLAY DEPARTMENT -
Psi Wars

Americans have allegedly created radiators of modulated signals, which control people's behavior thousands of kilometers from afar.

Yuri Malin, a former KGB officer, says that there was a special department in the structure of Russian secret services to protect top officials from malicious intentions of scientists and extrasensory individuals, who could create devices that were capable of affecting human psychology. Yuri Malin worked as a consultant of Boris Yeltsin's Federal Security Service.

"Special services do not take much care of President Putin nowadays. There are no professionals in his team to help him struggle with the external psychophysical influence. There were such people in Boris Yeltsin's team, though. There was a special department, which was dealing with unconventional technologies to manipulate the human mind," Malin says.

"The department was formed when someone found an eavesdropping device in the house of the Russian government. It was actually not a microphone, but a directional antenna. Specialists concluded that the antenna had been installed in the office to exert a psychological influence on the president.

"Extrasensory appliances were used during pre-election campaigns in the beginning of the 1990sin Russia. I have a document dated December 16th, 1995 - a price list for extrasensory pre-election services. The extrasensory security guarantee for candidates cost $3,000 a month at that time. A candidate had to pay $2,000 to "bewitch" the entire population of a town to make all people vote for him. The cheapest extrasensory service for candidates - assistance during public appearances - cost $150 per hour.

"There were about 20 institutes in Russia in the beginning of the 1990s, which developed a variety of extrasensory devices, like the one that was found in Boris Yeltsin's office. I know those people, who worked on psychic developments and those, who denounced them as something pseudo-scientific. Those were one and the same people actually. There were certain devices, which could drive a person to insanity. The goal of our department was to control, supervise and restrain this "weapon of mass manipulation." When the system of state support collapsed, commercial and criminal structures started sponsoring the "pseudo-scientific inventors." High-ranking officials knew that someone could turn them into zombies. That is why Yeltsin's government assigned 500 million rubles for a special program to prevent any kind of remote manipulation effect.

"When Vladimir Putin came to power, the department was abolished. I do not know if a new department was established afterwards. It is not ruled out that the new president considered the psychic security service nonsensical. A lot of experienced specialists have been left out of job at the time when human mind manipulation technologies are developing so actively in the world today. Americans have reportedly created radiators of modulated signals, which control people's behavior. One should say that the control can be conducted thousands of kilometers from afar. It is not ruled out that such technologies were used during the presidential election in Ukraine."

The agents of the psychic security department were taking great care of Boris Yeltsin: they were meticulously watching over every little detail. They could not let a button of Yeltsin's shirt disappear: it was believed that extrasensory individuals could put the evil eye on the president with the help of any little thing that Yeltsin owned.

- HEAR THE CALL DEPARTMENT -

A Biblical Experience In Jerusalem

A bizarre mental syndrome that has seen scores of visitors to Jerusalem become convinced they are characters from the Bible is the subject of a major new exhibition in Scotland.

Artist Nathan Coley has turned his attention to Jerusalem syndrome, a travel psychosis affecting people hypnotised by the Holy City who start to preach and behave as biblical characters, from King David to John the Baptist, the Virgin Mary and Jesus himself.

The syndrome is estimated to affect up to 20 people a year, almost all Christians or Jews. It has provoked heated debates among doctors over what actually turns sufferers??™ heads.

Dr Moshe Kalian, the district psychiatrist of Jerusalem, who has diagnosed many cases of Jerusalem syndrome, says: "In our opinion, Jerusalem is a kind of magnet for certain people who develop their ideas before they come and act out their behaviour once they are here."

Jerusalem is a kind of magnet for certain people who develop their ideas before they come and act out their behaviour once they are here

Cases run from people who start preaching in the streets of the city to more bizarre behaviour. Kalian says: "There are anecdotal cases like a tourist who was making a fuss in a hotel because he was giving orders to prepare the last supper. There was a lady who went to an emergency room, claimed she was having a miscarriage and when the doctors told her she was not pregnant at all, she said she came to Jerusalem to give birth to the new baby Jesus."

Kalian says many people may have similar ideas, but don??™t cause a disturbance that attracts the police: "They don??™t bother anyone and nobody bothers them."

Some people simply chant, sing or deliver sermons at holy sites. Others turn dangerous, as in the case in the case of Dennis Rohan, a deranged Australian Christian who set fire to the Al Aqsa Mosque in 1969.

Kalian says: "I treated a guy who was stopped by the police who entered the lobby of a hotel and started to grab glasses from people??™s faces. He said he wanted them to see the true light. That guy thought of himself as the Messiah, that he was chosen to come to Israel and bring peace to the world. He was under my therapy for almost ten years.

"I remember one or two cases in which people walked to the desert, while an Italian tourist some 15 years ago was wearing a sack and using a rope to keep his clothes together, and he was walking barefoot from Jerusalem to Bethlehem."

Kalian estimates about 20 tourists a year may typically suffer Jerusalem syndrome and US comedian, Marc Maron, developed a book and stage show, Jerusalem Syndrome: My Life as a Reluctant Messiah. Author Robert Stone used it as a theme in his thriller Damascus Gate, there was a 1998 film The Jerusalem Syndrome, and it became the subject of a German dance performance exploring the "psychological and physical" extremes.

Coley first visited Jerusalem last February and returned during Ramadan, while Yasser Arafat lay dying in Paris. "I deliberately didn??™t go looking for madness," he says. "That would have been too straightforward and, for me, less interesting. I documented every day the tension and confusion between the three faiths there.

"Does the syndrome exist? Yes, but may be in another city it would just be called madness. It??™s not that these people are normal before they come to Jerusalem. They are just looking for the correct stage to enact their drama."

- UFOS AROUND THE WORLD DEPARTMENT -

Kongka La is the low ridge pass in the Himalayas. It is in the disputed India-China border area in Ladakh. In the map the red zone is the disputed area still under Chinese control in the Aksai Chin area. The Chinese held northeastern part is known as Aksai Chin and Indian South West is known as Ladakh. This was where Indian and Chinese army fought major war in 1962. The area is one of the least accessed area in the world and by agreement the two countries do not patrol that part of the border. According to many tourists, Buddhist monks and the local people of Ladakh, Indian Army and Chinese Military maintain the line of control. But there is something much more serious happening in this area.

According to the few locals people on the Indian and Chinese side, this is where the UFOs are seen coming out of the ground, According to many, the UFO underground bases are in this region and both the Indian and Chinese Government know this very well..

Recently, some Hindu pilgrims on their way to Mount Kailash from the Western pass, came across strange lights in the sky. The local guides while in the Chinese territory told them that this was nothing new and is a normal phenomenon from Kongka Pass area the tensed border between India and China. This strange lighted triangular silent crafts show up from underground and moves almost vertically up. Some of the adventurous pilgrims wanted to look into the site. They were first turned by the Chinese guard posts as they were refused entry from the Chinese side and then when they tried to approach the site from Indian side, the Indian border patrol also turned them down in spite of their permit to travel between the two countries.

The pilgrims at that stage started quizzing the Indian border petrol personnel. According to them, the security personnel told them that they are ordered not to allow any one near the area of interest and it is true that strange objects come out from under the ground with amplified and modulated lights. India??™s Special Forces and possible visit the area by intelligence agencies.

The locals start laughing in that area when they are asked about these UFO sightings. According to them the extra-terrestrial presence is well known and is in deep into the ground. They believe neither the Indian or Chinese Governments want to expose the fact for some reason. When they bring up thus matter to local Governments, they are told to keep quiet. This is the region where the Euresian plate and the Indian plate have created convergent plate boundaries. Convergent plate boundaries are formed where one plate dives under another. Thus this is one of the very few areas in the world where the depth of the crust twice as much as in other places. The opposite is found in hot spots like Yellow Stone National Park in America where the earth??™s crust in thin.

The double thick earth crust allows the creation of underground bases deep into the tectonic plates.

Kongka La has beautiful rocks and granites. For some strange reasons neither Chinese nor Indian authorities ever excavate, dig or mine holes in this area. The area is pristine and untouched.

Recently, both India and China have moved forward to solve all border disputes and start the Sino-Indian relations all over again. The Aksai Chin area is still disputed. But interesting while negotiations both the Governments are indifferent on this area. India and China as shown in the accompanying maps have huge border along the Himalayas and they are negotiating on all these regions. Though India claims that Aksai Chin is part of India, the common belief in the Government, it is not a show stopper. On the other hand, Chinese after winning Aksai Chin from India in 1962 war, built a strategic military highway. Now they are using an alternate highway no to bother with the area in Kongka La.

Recently in the local school, young children of the area entered into a drawing contest. More than half of the drawings had to do with strange objects in the sky and some coming out of the mountains. Many of them even know what and when to look for.

Many UFO researchers believe that there are hidden UFO bases under the ocean and deep under the ground. Kongka La is experiencing some strange phenomenon and suspicious objects coming out of the inaccessible huge mountains (Himalayas) and both the Governments refuse to come out and say what these are.

The other alternative is that it is an underground strategic Air Force base of some one. Then why will either country allow the base on the official no man??™s land in the highly sensitive disputed border areas? Why is this region continuously reporting UFO sightings from various kinds of people?

- CONTACTS WITH THE PLANET CLARION DEPARTMENT -

Farewell Good Space Brothers

This is the story of the planet Clarion and its race of small, but fully formed, men. We know of their existence because on Sept. 24, 1953, Redondo Beach resident Truman Bethurum told a Daily Breeze reporter that he saw them.

In fact, Bethurum did a lot more than see them. According to several articles, he rode on their flying saucer 11 times. And its captain, Aura Rahnes, promised to take Bethurum to visit Clarion in the near future.

Another thing Bethurum noticed: The Clarions all dressed like Greyhound bus drivers. And, not only did they speak perfect English, but they also spoke in rhyme.

At the time of his encounters, Bethurum, was working on a construction job in the Nevada desert when the Clarionites, as he called them, stopped by for a visit.

"What I saw cost me my job and endless ridicule," Bethurum said at the time.

His tale was filled with vivid details. Capt. Rahnes was a beautiful woman who had a "slender Latin-type face" and wore a radiant red skirt, black velvet short sleeve blouse and a black beret with red trim. And they didn't refer to their ship as a saucer. They called it a "scow." And they enjoyed polkas and square dances.

The ship itself was 300 feet in diameter, 6 yards deep and made of burnished stainless steel. It hovered silently inches above the ground.

Coming at a time when flying saucer mania was riding high, Bethurum's tale of olive-skinned, black-haired aliens, quickly captured the nation's attention. He enthralled a capacity (and paying) audience at the aptly named Neptunian Club in Manhattan Beach and, within a few years, was on the lecture circuit, entertaining enthusiasts with tales of intergalactic visitors. He spoke to Lions Clubs, and appeared on radio and television programs.

He was especially popular with the Unidentified Flying Object Club of Sacramento and visited them several times.

And in 1954, he wrote a book, Aboard a Flying Saucer. Even today, his allure continues to resonate; a Google search of his name lists more than 500 entries.

Life on Clarion was blissful. According to Bethurum, there were no divorces, graft, tobacco or liquor. And Clarionites lived to be 1,000 years old.

Bethurum said he was given a message by the aliens for the people of Earth: We won't achieve space flight until we eliminate strife among men.

That wasn't the only prediction that didn't pan out. He was also informed that Mars contained heavy industry.

Some time after the initial encounter, Bethurum saw Rahnes drinking a glass of orange juice at a restaurant, but she ignored him.

Bethurum was 55 when he had his first encounter. Sometime later, he left the South Bay and moved to Salt Lake City. What became of him, records don't say. But his final appearance in the Daily Breeze on Oct. 5, 1958, states that his friends never came back.

- MYSTERY OF THE LITTLE PEOPLE DEPARTMENT -

Soldiers Encounter "Hobbits" In Borneo Jungles

Further to the tiny humans dubbed "Hobbits", for 40 years I've carried unanswered questions from the jungles of Borneo while I was serving in the Army.

In the early 1960s, during the Indonesian Confrontation, I was a member of a five-man deep penetration patrol group.

Our job was to find and get aid to jungle tribes, mostly Ibans and a few Dyak villages, protecting them from possible attack and bringing in aid workers to encourage them to move to the coast.

Several times, we were asked by the tribes what we were doing to help 'the little people'.

Our communication was difficult, but the Boma (witch doctor) described a tribe of waist-high people they occasionally saw on their daily hunting expeditions.

After a good day's hunting, the Ibans would leave a monkey or small boar for them. On the very rare occasions that they met, the small people chattered like monkeys. The Boma said they walked tall and upright and had no body hair.

Months later, my group was well into a deep penetration patrol. Having followed a jungle stream for a mile down a mountain, we came to the edge of a precipice where we started to back-track.

As we did so, we came across tiny footprints (the size of a human four or five-year-old, but slightly broader at the toes) that had been trailing us for about 100 yards. Unlike us, they had used the soft sand at the stream edge, hence our chance observation.

Maybe they were not so stupid because as we back-tracked, the prints were filling with water and disappearing

Our searches found nothing, but we did see a number of hidden cave homes with tiny footprints inside.

Our sixth sense warned us that sometimes there were inhabitants deep inside, but for whatever reason, possibly fear of ridicule, we agreed it must be children resting while their fathers were hunting.

In the mid Seventies, by coincidence, I met a man who had found these same caves in use in 1978. This is a border area of a mega-oil rich state where there is no reason at all for people to live in caves.
