Pigs Found to Contain Genes From Man-Made Flu Virus

Samples taken from South Korean pigs contain genes from a human flu virus created by scientists in 1933, and one American flu researcher says the sequences could represent a dangerous situation for humans.

The World Health Organization, which monitors the worldwide spread of flu, is remaining mum until researchers finish an investigation of the pig samples.

Henry Niman, the founder of Recombinomics, has researched the spread of bird flu and its changing genetic makeup for two years. He says the investigation into Korean pigs is moving too slowly.

The presence of a man-made human flu virus in pigs may be worrisome for several reasons. First, a man-made virus has no business in pigs -- did the virus get there naturally, or was it a lab accident? More frighteningly, but less likely, was it bioterrorism? Second, viruses often use pigs as a conduit to humans, who would have little or no immune resistance to this particular strain of flu since no one has been exposed to it.

"In terms of flu, pigs have always represented a danger to humans because these animals act as a mixing vessel for various strains of influenza," said Dick Thompson, a spokesman for the World Health Organization.

But WHO won't be convinced that the data is real -- that the human sequences are not a result of laboratory contamination instead of human virus in a pig -- until more laboratories can verify the samples.

Henry Niman, founder of Recombinomics and a researcher who has sleuthed the spread of bird flu and its changing genetic makeup for two years, says the investigation is moving too slowly. If pigs in Korea are carrying a man-made human flu, authorities should take action immediately to prevent it from spreading.

Sang Heui Seo of Chungnam National University in Daejon, South Korea, entered six genetic sequences from pigs into GenBank in late October. Niman came across the data in late November, and noticed they contained between three and seven genes from the WSN33 virus, which was created in 1933 by a London lab that was researching the 1918 flu pandemic. The London lab found that the virus could infect mice, indicating that it might successfully infect humans, Niman said. He reported the presence of the human WSN33 genes in Seo's samples to WHO officials in early December.

According to a news article in Science, WHO initially dismissed the data as lab contamination based on the fact that a researcher at St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, said he had shipped samples of WSN33 to Seo's lab. But Seo told Science he never received any WSN33.

St. Jude's declined to comment on the Korean pigs, and Seo did not return e-mails requesting comment.

Seo submitted his pig data to Science for publication, but the journal's editors rejected the research, asking for outside lab testing to verify that the data was valid. Labs in Hong Kong and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are now verifying the samples. WHO is also waiting for the results to decide whether the pigs might be a danger to humans.

"If there really are WSN33 sequences in pigs -- and probably birds -- on farms in Korea," Niman said, "then there is a very major problem."

Niman says the evidence can likely be explained by one of two possibilities: Either the man-made virus escaped from a lab, or the virus' genes are recombining -- morphing in a way that most flu researchers believe is impossible.

"(WHO doesn't) want to think about the fact that it escaped from some lab, which is most certainly what happened, and they certainly don't want to think about recombination," Niman said.

Reflections on Life/Death and American Politics

[Excerpted from the March 28th weekly essay on Bishop John Shelby Spong's website]

How does one separate sincere conviction from political manipulation? It is not my desire to cast judgment on anyone's motives. That role is reserved for God. It is, however, legitimate to notice and to raise questions that might lead to a possible or even probable conclusion that Terri Schiavo has become to some a useful political symbol.

The only way I know how to separate hype from conviction is to look for consistency. To say one believes in "a culture of life" sounds good until one employs a reality check. Can one believe, for example, in "a culture of life" and still applaud the decision to go to war in Iraq which has cost the lives of over 1500 members of the American Armed Forces, and left with wounds more than 12,000, to say nothing of the Iraqi dead and wounded said to number more than 100,000?

When one realizes that this war was a preemptive strike, not a response to an attack and that all of the reasons cited to justify that preemptive strike turned out not to be true, is
the claim to favor 'a culture of life' still credible? Can one who claims to believe in "a culture of life" still refuse to investigate fully those responsible for the inhumane practices that occurred in the prisons at Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib, as well as the murders of prisoners by American interrogators in both Afghanistan and Iraq?

Can one believe in "a culture of life" and still practice capital punishment to excessive levels? Why is it that states that are in 'the Bible Belt,' where the religious vote is determinative, execute more prisoners each year than any other part of the nation put together? Why is it that this region, of which I am a native, practiced slavery longer, allowed legal lynching longer and fought so hard to preserve segregation? Are these things consistent with "a culture of life"?

Can one believe in "a culture of life" and still oppose the use of condoms in Africa where the AIDS virus is rampant, or the dispensing of clean needles as well as condoms in the United States when we know that the absence of both makes death a certainty for many?

Can one believe in "a culture of life" and oppose competent sex education in public schools, the absence of which is a major factor in the rise in abortions? Does one really believe that pious rhetoric is a substitute for effective policy? Has anyone noticed that the abortion rate has risen during the last five years with anti-abortion forces in power? If the ultimate goal is to lower numbers of abortions, as I think it must be, what actions are effective or ineffective in accomplishing that goal?

Can one believe in "a culture of life" while the rhetoric of the religious right continues to be a factor in the abuse and murder of gay and lesbian people? Do we need to be reminded that at the funeral of Matthew Shepard in Wyoming, a Baptist preacher picketed the church carrying a sign that stated "God said fags should die! Leviticus 20."

When I see inconsistency in the bigger picture then the credibility of the loudest voices seeking to prolong the life of a woman, in a vegetative state for 15 years, is compromised.

I add two other troubling questions. Does a political party opposed to universal health coverage have the right to tell people how they must act in the long term care of a brain destroyed person, for whom they bear the private health care costs? Does a political party dedicated to the principle of smaller less intrusive government have the right to enter the most private arenas of human life in an effort to serve the ideological convictions of a major part of its political base?

Inconsistency arouses my suspicion that one's stated conviction is sometimes little more than the handmaiden of political expediency. When I learned that the names and addresses of those who have contributed to the principals in this human tragedy have been sold to a direct mail marketer of the religious right, my idealism about this situation simply dies.

Yucca Probe Focuses on Faked Data For Nuclear Waste Project

E-mails by several government scientists on the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump project suggest workers were planning to fabricate records and manipulate results to ensure outcomes that would help the project move forward.

???I don??™t have a clue when these programs were installed. So I??™ve made up the dates and names,??? wrote a U.S. Geological Survey employee in one e-mail released Friday by a congressional committee investigating suspected document falsification on the project.

???This is as good as it??™s going to get. If they need more proof, I will be happy to make up more stuff.???

In another message the same employee wrote to a colleague: ???In the end I keep track of 2 sets of files, the ones that will keep QA happy and the ones that were actually used.??? QA apparently refers to ???quality assurance.???

The e-mails were in a batch of correspondence released in advance of next week??™s hearing by the House Government Reform Subcommittee on the Federal Work Force and Agency Organization, chaired by Rep. Jon Porter, R-Nev.

The Energy and Interior departments revealed the existence of the e-mails March 16, and inspectors general of both departments are investigating. The FBI also is conducting a probe, according to a subcommittee staffer.

Yucca Mountain, approved by Congress in 2002, is planned as the nation??™s underground repository for 77,000 tons of defense waste and used reactor fuel from commercial power plants. The material is supposed to be buried for at least 10,000 years beneath the Nevada desert, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

Many Nevadans and some environmentalists say the waste can never be safely stored and the plan puts local residents at risk. There also are concerns among others outside the state that hauling the waste to Nevada puts at risk those along the routes.

But the Bush administration, the energy industry and others say a central storage site is needed, and would provide better security for tens of thousands of tons of commercial and defense waste now housed at sites in 39 states.

The e-mails were written from 1998 to 2000 and circulated among a team of USGS scientists studying how water moves through the planned dump site, a key issue in determining whether and how much radiation could escape.

Scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey validated Energy Department conclusions that water seepage was relatively slow, so radiation would be less likely to escape.

Many of the dozens of pages of e-mails released appear to involve not initial scientific experiments, but rather attempts to provide documentation of work done in the past.

The Energy Department is working to submit an application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a license to run the dump, and must turn over extensive documentation.

The e-mails provide a window into the environment surrounding the project, first considered over 20 years ago. Names and some proper nouns were blacked out by congressional staffers before they were released.

???Science by peer pressure is dangerous but sometime (sic) it is necessary,??? says one message, by a second scientist at the geological survey.

The emergence of the e-mails was the latest setback for Yucca Mountain, which has also suffered money shortfalls and an appeals court decision last summer that is forcing a rewrite of radiation exposure limits for the site. The Energy Department recently abandoned a planned 2010 completion date, and department officials have not given a new date.

Pope Attacker Says He Had Vatican Help
ROME, Italy -- The Turkish man who shot Pope John Paul II was quoted Thursday as saying Vatican prelates helped him carry out the 1981 attack in St. Peter's Square, but the claim was quickly dismissed by a Vatican cardinal.

Mehmet Ali Agca, now jailed in Turkey, shot John Paul in the abdomen on May 13, 1981, while the pope was riding in an open car in Rome's St. Peter's Square. He has given conflicting reasons for the attack on the pope and his motives remain unclear.

"Without the help of priests and cardinals I would have not been able to carry out that action," Agca was quoted Thursday as saying in an interview with the Italian daily La Repubblica. "The devil is within the Vatican."

But in an apparently contradictory remark, Ali Agca also said in the interview that "nobody in the world knew of my attempt."

Agca was extradited to Turkey in 2000 after serving almost 20 years in Italy for the shooting of the pope, and is now serving time in jail for separate crimes.

"Ali Agca has always sidetracked (investigations) rather than disclosing real facts," Cardinal Roberto Tucci, former organizer of papal trips, told Vatican Radio. "One must be very suspicious of his statements."

Italian newspapers reported this week that newly discovered documents show the attack on the pope was ordered by the Soviet KGB and organized by the Bulgarian secret service with the help of secret police of former East Germany.

According to Corriere della Sera and La Repubblica, documents found in the archive of the Stasi, the East German secret police, appear to confirm that Bulgarian agents, acting on the orders of their powerful KGB counterparts, used Ali Agca to carry out the attack, while the Stasi was used to coordinate the operation and cover up its traces.

The newspapers say the files have been given to Bulgaria and will be made available to an Italian parliamentary commission investigating the activities in Europe of former communist regimes.

The recovered papers consist mainly of letters detailing the cooperation between East German and Bulgarian agents to avoid blame for the attack from falling on communist bloc countries, Corriere said. It was not immediately clear whether the documents contained direct proof of conspiracy.

"We must now see what emerges from the Stasi documents. The suspicion is that the Bulgarians were carrying out orders from the Soviet KGB," said Tucci. "But let's leave the task of examining the papers to magistrates and historians."

There has long been speculation that the assassination attempt was carried out at the request of Soviet leaders, who were allegedly alarmed by the pope's support for the Solidarity trade union in Poland and his outspoken opposition to communist regimes.

Three Bulgarians suspected of complicity in the shooting were acquitted by an Italian court because of a lack of evidence.

In 2002, John Paul sought to lay the issue to rest, declaring during a visit to Bulgaria that he never believed there was a Bulgarian connection to Agca.

However, in his recently published book, "Memory and Identity: Conversations Between Millenniums," the pope returned to the issue by saying that Agca had been maneuvered by another party.

"Ali Agca, as everyone says, is a professional assassin. The shooting was not his initiative, someone else planned it, someone else commissioned him," the pope wrote.

Next Two Popes: The End of the Catholic Church
by Jack Manuelian
44425/76862_lastpope.jpg ipod.com/cjimages/lastpope.jpg" title="" alt="" style="width: 250px; height: 175px;" hspace="50" vspace="30" align="right">
The world is witnessing the last years of the Catholic Church. There are only two more popes coming after John Paul II, then their play of some eighteen centuries will come to an end and the final stage-curtain will fall amidst a world in flames because of a raging World War III.

St. Malachy, the Irish Catholic saint of twelfth century, gave the following mottos to the last two popes who will succeed John Paul II. To the penultimate pope he gave the motto "of the glory of the olive." An olive branch stands for peace and there is presently only one Catholic spiritual figure who merits that branch. He is Cardinal Roger Etchegaray.

Etchegaray was president of the Vatican council of justice and peace, up until 1998. In Jan. 2001, he was special papal envoy to the celebration of the World Peace Day in Jerusalem and the Holy Land. In May 1-8, 2002 he was papal envoy on a special peace mission to Jerusalem. On March, 2004, he received the Prize "Felix Houphouet-Boigny" for his work toward world peace.

Etchegaray, although now 83 years old, he is very much active. On sept. 2004, he was special papal envoy to the celebrations of the centennial of the "social week of France." Presently most cardinals of the conclave are inclined toward a short papacy, toward a
"transitional pope" and Echegaray can serve them right. Actually, his reign would be short and during his papacy the see will be moved from Vatican because of climate of war (like USA attacking Iran) or because of fire destroying most of the buildings of Vatican.

Etchegary was born in ancient France, toward south of the famous wine region Bordeaux, near the Spanish border, in the town of Bayonne. His surname indicates that he is of a Basque heritage and not a French. If he becomes the next pope then the saying of sage Nosty will come true: "Not from Spain, but he who is born in ancient France will be elected for the trembling gondola of the papacy." Page 80 of my book.

In page 77, I did mention the sextet No.30 of Nostradamus: "In a short time the physician of great evil and the leech of unequal order [this is a reference to an evil personage working in the dark], will put the Olive Branch [the next pope after John Paul] on fire. The post of the pope will be moved from one coast to another, and by so great fire their empire will be accosted that the heat will evaporate the saliva in the mouth."

Etchegary's successor is most likely Cardinal Jean-Marie Lusti-ger, who with his eyeglasses looks like Henry Kissinger. He was born as Aaron Lustinger in Paris, France, from a Polish Jewish parents. He lost his parents during Nazi occupation of France. Lived with a Catholic family, then converted to Catholicism in Aug 25, 1940. Presently he is 79 years old. He could become the last pope and during his reign the Catholic Church and its hierarchy will be "gone by the winds."

St. Malachy gave him the motto "Petrus Romanus" which is Latin for Peter the Roman. The original apostle Peter was a Jew of course who, in contrast, might be called "Petrus Judaicus." Also, in 1981, when Lustinger became a cardinal he received the title "Saints Marcellino e Pietro," now, "Pietro" means stone or a rock, this is another reference to Peter whom the Catholics believe was the rock upon whom their church was build, a church that the world will soon witness its destruction.

In page 78 of my book I did mention a prophecy of Nostradamus, Century 5, Quatrain 56: "Through the death of the very old pontiff, the roman of good age will be elected. Of him it will be said he dishonors the see, and he will sit long and his deeds will sting."

In page 74, the quatrain 46, century 8, of Nostradamus is given: "Paul Mensole [pope John Paul] will die. At three leagues from Rosne his two immediate successors are put to flight by the dragon [monster of Tarascon]. For the horrible reinging Mars [war] will make of itself, of the cock [the last pope], and of the eagle [penultimate pope] three allies."

And in page 75 of my book an outline is given for the three last popes by Nostradamus. Quatrain 57, century 2: "Before the conflict [of World War III] the great wall [John Paul II, the Giant] will fall. The great one [who will succeed him]will die a hasty and lamented death.[The next and the last pope]will navigate the see close to the river [while] the earth will be tainted with blood [because of WW III].

Mothman Sightings in London
44425/76859_mothman.jpg ripod.com/cjimages/mothman.jpg" title="" alt="" style="width: 200px; height: 250px;" hspace="50" vspace="30" align="right">
One of the most well known cases of a supernatural creature is that of the Mothman. In the small town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, there were over a hundred sightings of this creature in a little over a year, yet it had seemingly never been heard of before or since.

New research has revealed that there is a strong possibility that this assumption was incorrect and that the Mothman did not simply disappear. There is evidence that the Mothman case bears striking similarities to a lengthy investigation carried out in London which dealt with a supernatural phenomena dubbed by the British media ???The Highgate Vampire??™.

For a 14 month period, between November 1966 and December 1967, the town of Point Pleasant in West Virginia was besieged of reports of what was and still is considered to be a supernatural being. Such was the scale and frequency of these sightings that they have become one of the best known paranormal mysteries of all time. Description of the creature as a powerful winged humanoid led to the press naming the creature ???Mothman??™ after the popular TV series ???Batman??™

The creature apparently set up its home in an abandoned TNT plant containing a labyrinth of manmade tunnels and concrete structures used for storing explosives during the war. Remote and derelict, the area was surrounded by woodland, making the area a very isolated location; a perfect lair where few would be willing to venture and those that did would have little chance of finding anything. ???Red lights??™ could often be seen flying over the TNT works on a night making it obvious that the creature had made the works its home.

In all, over a hundred people witnessed the Mothman sightings, providing a wealth of testimony as to its appearance and behaviour.

Like all eyewitness statements there are a wide variety of accounts and descriptions of the Mothman. Despite this, a very clear and consistent picture has emerged of a dark coloured creature, a mixture of grey, olive green and brown, standing around seven feet tall and having the torso of a muscular human. Witnesses suggest that it had no discernable facial features except for its piercing red eyes which were said to have an almost hypnotic effect on those who witnessed it. The eyes in 99% of the sightings are described as being bright-red and hypnotizing.

The eyes are also described as being reflective of light, but glowing and ???much??? more intensive than a normal animal. When in the presence of the creature, eyewitness describe a ???helpless??? or ???hypnotizing??? feeling, such as not being able to run, walk, or in some cases even move. The gaze of the eyes is also described to be the deciding factor of not being able to describe the facial features. When eyewitnesses describe the hypnotization, they describe it as being drawn in by the eyes, and everything else becoming a blur of vision. The creature is generally described as having leathery wings like that of a bat, with a wingspan of around 10-12 feet (3.04-3.66 metres). Witnesses who encountered it reported being quite terrified by its presence. Seemingly, it was able to appear as if from nowhere and take flight with equal ease.

Marcella Bennett, one of the many witnesses who encountered the creature described it thus ???It rose up slowly from the ground; a big grey thing. Bigger than a man, with terrible glowing eyes???. She also noted that the creature made a screeching sound like a ???woman screaming??™ as it flew off.

It is well documented that the sightings of the Mothman dramatically and tragically concluded in December 1968 when the Silver Bridge collapsed into the Ohio River below, during rush hour, killing 46 people.

To my knowledge, no direct evidence has ever been produced that would suggest that the Mothman either prophesised this event or directly caused it but the general impression of evil that witnesses had all experienced when they encountered this creature left them in no doubt as to a connection.

Less than two years after the last Mothman sighting in America, a disturbing phenomenon began to be reported in the Highgate area of North London. Ordinary people suddenly began to report strange and frightening encounters with a tall dark ???vampire like??™ creature. The activity centred on Highgate cemetery, a rambling Victorian cemetery that sits atop Highgate Hill. The British media immediately seized on the vampire idea in the same way as their American counterparts had seized on the ???Batman??™ idea; and the Highgate Vampire was so named.

Like the Mothman sightings, there was no documented history of any such supernatural creature fitting its description being directly associated with the cemetery. What is interesting to note is that nearly 50 years earlier in London, in the spring of 1922, an enormous black bat-like creature with a wingspan of six feet (1.8 metres) was reported flying around a West Drayton Church during the night of a full moon. Several terrified witnesses watched the creature dive into the churchyard, where it roamed the tombs. When two policemen gave chase through the church cemetery, the creature let out a loud blood-curdling screech, and flew into the air to evade them. It??™s interesting to ponder if there is a connection between this little known report and either the Mothman or the Highgate Vampire, which we will look at in more detail now.

In 1969, sightings of the so-called Highgate Vampire began without any warning of unusual paranormal activity and were witnessed by some very ordinary and very credible members of the public. So prolific were the sightings, that paranormal investigator David Farrant, of the British Psychic and Occult Society, was called in to investigate the case.

Thirty years later, David Farrant is still the leading expert on the Highgate Vampire, and tends to discount the ???Vampire??™ label as an unfortunate consequence of the popularity of ???the Hammer House of Horror??™ amongst the public at that time. He maintains with absolute certainty that the Highgate Vampire was neither a hoax nor a vampire, but nevertheless it was something very real.

During the course of his investigations, which took place over several years, David interviewed and collected statements from a great many eyewitnesses. Incredibly, during the course of his research, David actually encountered the creature himself. In his own words David describes his encounter with the creature in the cemetery:

???The figure at first, really looked 'real' at the onset, I put this down to maybe one or two local people having heard stories about 'vampires', and somebody getting dressed up as one and maybe trying to frighten passers by at they went past the top gate.

But this was definitely not the case. To start with, it was a bitterly cold night, but the immediate area had gone even colder, the figure (or whatever it was) was over 7ft tall - although it was hard to tell as you could not really see the bottom of it and it could have been floating above the ground. But what really convinced me was the fact that it seemed to have red eyes that were positioned in a vague 'black shape' that I took to be its head.

It is difficult to describe, except that it seemed to be trying to drain me of energy, and I felt almost as if I was being 'hypnotised'. It is for this reason that I mentally repeated a kabbalistic incantation, which I had been taught earlier when I first became involved in these matters.

As a psychic investigator, I have witnessed many strange things over the years (changes in temperature, objects moving, fleeting figures and the like), but that is the first time I have ever seen anything like that!???

In addition to his own personal experience, David has a wealth of independent witness testimony that all point to the same thing; An elusive creature about seven feet tall with glowing red eyes that seemed to exert a psychic influence over those it encounters and which had a menacing aura that left its witnesses very frightened.

Eyewitness testimony from both sides of the Atlantic is surprisingly consistent, which is why there is a distinct possibility that these two cases could be linked. Almost all the witnesses reported the creature as being a similar height, dark and menacing to the point of causing terror in its victims. They all reported that the creature had piercing red eyes that seemed to exert a psychic influence on those who encountered it.

Neither location had a history of paranormal activity of that nature but once it started it was on an unprecedented scale. The sightings at both locations seemed to start for no reason and stopped just as suddenly. The proximity of the time frame between the two events is also interesting to consider, as there was less than two years between the two. Did the Mothman mysteriously disappear only to return to our world as the creature known as the Highgate Vampire? In many respects we have raised more questions than we have so far answered, but the art of paranormal investigations entails asking such questions, conducting the research and keeping an open mind; only then can we hope to find the answers.

NEW DELHI - Witches, monkey man, Ganesha drinking milk, the deadly munochwa ??” these are the stuff of urban legends. Legends which have terrorised the imagination of numerous Indians and held them in thrall. Sunday Times unravels these yarns

It's the stuff of pulp fiction. A ???witch' ??” some say three ???witches' ??” is rumoured to be on the prowl in Delhi, asking for onions. The tale goes that anyone unfortunate enough to give her an onion dies after the witch cuts the onion. What's more, blood pours from it. Those falling for the gag are applying palm prints of turmeric and henna on doors to ward off her evil eye.

GANESHA'S MIRACLE: Welcome to 21st century India ??” an India where reports of witches, black magic, supernatural beings and superstition still grab eyeballs, leading to mass hysteria and suspending the common sense of people. No wonder the yarn of ???Ganesha drinking milk' was lapped up not just in India but in distant nations too on September 21, 1995. Scientists tried to explain the phenomenon as capillary action by stone statues but were shouted down by arguments that metal statues too performed the miracle.

Another melodrama that subsumed people was the 'monkey man' who wore "a metal helmet, had metal claws and glowing red eyes" and terrorised the Capital in May 2001. Many people were reportedly scratched, and two people even died when they leapt from roofs in panic. But no 'monkey man' was ever photographed or captured. The fact that people sleep on roofs in summer, well within the reach of real monkeys, probably contributed to the collective hysteria.

And often, such urban legends have held people spellbound. Years ago, both Mumbai and Kolkata were rocked by the 'stoneman'. Mumbai suffered his attacks twice, in the 1960s and in the mid-80s. The first time, a man was arrested for the murder of 42 people. But that did little to stem the killings which started again in 1985. The mystery murderer of beggars and pavement-dwellers remained elusive. Kolkata's 'stoneman' killed 13 people between 1989-90.

MUNOCHWA WONDER: If Mumbai had the 'stoneman', UP was terrorised by the 'munochwa' between June-July, 2002. This was an unknown object which injured hundreds in Mirzapur, Lucknow, Kanpur and eastern districts of the state. The 'attacks' were variously described as an invasion by UFOs, insects and others. Recently, IIT Kanpur professor Ravindra Arora said the reason behind this was ball lightning, a phenomenon where a cluster of high temperature luminous particles emit an orangish, red colour and wave through the air a few metres above the ground due to electric charge. He said almost 96 per cent of 'munochwa' incidents were reported during or after heavy thunderstorms, often accompanied by rainfall.

Interestingly, Silicon City too has had spooky experiences. In 1996, stories of a female ghost knocking at doors did the rounds in Bangalore. Soon people even put up sign boards asking the ghost to "come tomorrow". Apparently the blood-thirsty ghost was kind enough to spare that victim! Finally, Bangaloreans laid the ghost to rest one day.

Two years later, the city was again gripped by a fear of being injected by the AIDS virus. Sinister messages were stuck on people, saying: "You've been injected with the HIV virus. Welcome to the world of AIDS." There were rumours of people being jabbed with syringes containing the virus. Illusion or reality ??” a very thin line divides the two.
