----- Shea Stadium closing
Shea Stadium in New York City is shutting down after the 2008 baseball season.
The Beatles concert at Shea Stadium on August 15, 1965, was the first concert to be held at a major outdoor stadium and set records for attendance and revenue generation. Over 55,000 people saw the show. Shea will close after the Mets' 2008 season; the team moves to the new Citi Field in 2009. The Flushing, N.Y. stadium has been used as a concert venue only occasionally -- most famously, when the Beatles played there
in 1965 and 1966. Other Shea headliners have included Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, the Who, the Rolling Stones, Elton John and the Police. Joel has never played there. Billy Joel will be the last artist to play at New York's Shea Stadium with two concerts, July 16th and July 18, billed as "The Last Play at Shea, From the Beatles to Billy." Joel would become the fourth artist to play multiple shows at Shea since its opening in 1964, joining the Beatles (1965 and 1966), the Rolling Stones (1989), Elton John with Eric Clapton (1992) and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (2003). http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/nym/ballpark/history.jsp -------- Lennon's favorite cafe closes

After a three-year, $400 million renovation, the famed Plaza Hotel has reopened with $1,000-a-night rooms and afternoon tea in the famed Palm Court beneath a newly restored stained-glass ceiling.
The Plaza, which is a National Historic Landmark, first opened in 1907. Marilyn Monroe was photographed here and the Beatles stayed here on their first visit to the U.S. in 1964.
The Plaza's current owners originally planned to convert all guest rooms into condominiums, but the plan was criticized by preservationists
and the hotel workers' union. Negotiations with Mayor Michael Bloomberg led to a deal that resulted in 282 hotel rooms, down from the original 805, and 181 apartments.
The hotel plans a grand opening May 10. The hotel's Palm Court, an elegant dining room decorated with palm trees that serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and afternoon tea, is open already, along with a new Champagne Bar in the lobby. Later this spring, the famed Oak Bar will be back in service, along with a new lounge called the Rose Club. Also opening soon will be 160,000 square feet of high-end retail space, including a spa. http://www.theplazaresidences.com/
