Johnny Cash musical in the works
A new musical revue inspired by the music of the late Johnny Cash began test runs in September in Buffalo, N.Y.

"Ring of Fire" is being staged under the auspices of its co-creator, Richard Maltby Jr. -- who won a Tony Award for directing "Ain't Misbehavin'" and was nominated for "Fosse" -- Playbill On-Line reported. Producers are aiming for a March 2006 Broadway opening for the show, subtitled "The Johnny Cash Musical Show."

Tony Award-winner Jarrod Emick is among the six actors and musicians who bring "theatrical life" to more than 35 Cash songs, Playbill said. The show does not have an actor portraying The Man in Black, who died in 2003.

Tom Petty to Receive Billboard Century Award

Tom Petty will receive the Century Award, Billboard's highest honor for creative achievement, at this year's Billboard Music Awards.

The show will air live on the Fox network from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Dec. 6.

"This award comes at a particularly nice time as the Heartbreakers and I go into the 30th year of our career," the 54-year-old rocker said in a statement Thursday. "I'm very honored that Billboard has acknowledged me."

Petty's hits include "Free Fallin',""Don't Do Me Like That" and "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," a Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' duet with Stevie Nicks.

Previous award recipients include George Harrison, Buddy Guy, Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell, Carlos Santana, Chet Atkins, James Taylor, Emmylou Harris, Randy Newman, John Mellencamp, Annie Lennox, Sting and Stevie Wonder.

Petty introduced Harrison, the first Century Award honoree, at the 1992 Billboard Music Awards.

Instruments lost in Katrina to be replaced

U2 guitarist the Edge and rock producer Bob Ezrin are working to replace every musical instrument lost to Hurricane Katrina.

"It's clearly achievable," the Edge said. "Something should be done and not just because New Orleans deserves it, but because the world needs New Orleans."

Gibson Guitars and Guitar Center have pledged to help MusicRising, the initiative to replace destroyed instruments and ensure the Gulf Coast's musical heritage lives on, RollingStone.com reported.

"The idea that it would be just a place of history for music is awful to me," the Edge said. "Coming from Dublin in the '70s, when music was something you had to search out, I'd never dreamed that somewhere like New Orleans could exist. Music was coming out of the walls. It seemed not just a form of escapism, but like it was weaved into everybody's life."

Gibson is creating a custom guitar that will be sold at Guitar Centers and the two companies have pledged a minimum $1 million from its sales to the effort, Ezrin said.

MusicRising will start by replacing instruments lost by professional musicians then expand to churches, marching bands and schools.

Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp
THIS HOLIDAY MAKE SOMEONES "ROCK AND ROLL FANTASY"? A REALITY

IMAGINE FITTING ROGER DALTREY, CHEAP TRICK, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS' DICKEY BETTS, THE GRATEFUL DEAD'S MICKEY HART, JOURNEY'S NEAL SCHON, THE CARS' ELLIOT EASTON, AND STARHIP'S MICKEY THOMAS UNDER YOUR TREE? (IN BETWEEN THE NEW SKIS AND SWEATERS)

THATS WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU GIVE SOMEONE ALL ACCESS TO THE FIFTH ROCK AND ROLL FANTASY CAMP - SET TO TAKE PLACE IN LA THIS PRESIDENTS DAY WEEKEND FEB 16-20 2006

David Fishof,? founder of? the Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp, announced additional artists as well as Ultimate Gift Boxes for the fifth and largest Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp, where rock and roll fans are invited to come jam and rock out with rock legends.

"With The Holiday season quickly approaching we've decided to make available Ultimate Gift Boxes", said David Fishof. "During our last camp, a camper's wife emailed us saying, 'My husband, Dennis, is just having the time of his life. I just want to thank all of you for making his dreams come true.'"

David continues, "We realized that this wasn't just an opportunity for us to make someone's dream come true, but it was also a chance for someone else to give a loved one the ultimate gift??¦ something that would never be forgotten."

The Ultimate Gift Box arrives pre-wrapped and includes an all access pass to the camp, drumsticks, artist photos, a mini amplifier, t-shirts, and DVD's.

This years campers will perform live on stage at The House of Blues on Hollywood's Sunset Strip with Rock Star "professors" including: Roger Daltrey (The Who); The ENTIRE band of Cheap Trick; and Dickey Betts (the Allman Brothers). Campers will also be receiving instruction from special guest Rock Stars Mickey Hart (The Grateful Dead), Neal Schon (Journey), Elliot Easton (The Cars), and Mickey Thomas (Starship). As always, last minute unannounced guests are expected.

Daily camp rehearsals and jams are lead this year by Camp Director Jack Blades (Night Ranger), as well as counselors Simon Kirke (Bad Company), Jeff Pilson (Dokken), Michael Lardie (Great White), Vince Melamed (Jimmy Buffet and The Eagles), Bruce Kulick (Kiss), Doug Feiger (The Knack), Jerry Renino (The Monkees), Kelly Keagy (Night Ranger), Gary Burr (Songwriter, American Idol), and Kip Winger (Winger).

The camp will take place in Los Angeles, during the Presidents' Day Weekend, February 16-20, 2006. Over the course of 5 days and nights, participants will receive small group instruction from celebrity rock and roll musicians; they will perform live on stage at The House of Blues in Los Angeles; participate in a Battle of the Bands; receive rock n' roll instruction and jam daily with? their camp band; and attend seminars with industry executives and musicians. But best of all - no experience or instruments are required! For real rock fans, this is a rock and roll fantasy come true.?

The upcoming camp is already billed as the largest ever, and previous camper reactions and media coverage indicate the kind of excitement you can expect!

Good Morning America's Tony Perkins fulfilled his lifetime dream of Rock Stardom at last year's camp. GMA's camera crew followed Tony and his fellow campers throughout their five days and night's journey, ending with a LIVE on location performance of Tony and his new band! ?

The New York Times wrote, "At these camps, everybody is a star??¦"

"I cannot express the depth of my gratitude to you for the absolutely mind-blowing, amazing time that my husband and I both had at your Rock 'n Roll Fantasy Camp last week." ~ Julia Hauldren, camper wife

Don't miss The Learning Channel's coverage of February 2005's camp to air on February 22, 2006.
