A word from the editor:

Three macronutrients provide calories in your diet.  Fat is the
one you use to hear the most about.  Now diets are focusing more
on the other two - carbohydrates and protein.  But where should
the focus really be?  The Nutrition Tip should help you determine
this.  The Exercise Tip article will help you come up with a
unique Mother's Day gift idea.  It is just around the corner -
give Mom something different this year!

Best of Health!

FOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE

* Keep Your Shopping Cart Low in Fat *
Many consumers are concerned with eating too many carbohydrates,
as seen by the increase in low-carb foods in the grocery store.
(1)  What they may not realize, however, is that fat is the
number-one macronutrient to keep in tow if you want to lose
weight.  When you eat too many calories, your body stores the fat
calories you eat as body fat.  Further, a newly discovered
hormone, ghrelin, which causes the feeling of hunger, is reduced
when you eat foods that are high in carbohydrate and low in fat.

Here are some shopping tips to help keep your fat consumption low:

- Keep an eye on low-carb foods.
Many of these are made lower in carbohydrate by increasing their
fat content.

- Watch out for high-fat processed foods.
These include frozen entrees, baked goods and boxed meals.  many
of these are high in fat or call for the addition of a lot of fat
in preparation.

- Be aware of the fat content of condiments such as mayonnaise
and salad dressings.

- Choose light margarine instead of regular margarine or butter.

- Try some new flavored vinegars for use on salads and steamed
veggies so you will use less oil.

- Fill your cart with more fruits and vegetables.
These are naturally low in fat and high in fiber.

- Choose low-fat or non-fat versions of dairy products including
skim milk, fat-free sour cream, fat-free half and half and
reduced-fat cheese.

- Choose lean cuts of meat and use white meat poultry without the
skin.

- Limit your purchases of high-fat treats like doughnuts, cookies,
baked goods and chips.  These palatable foods are just too
 tempting!

* What is Healthful Food, Anyway? *
Take a walk in the aisles of your local grocery store and you are
likely to be overwhelmed with choices.  Manufacturers are more
sophisticated than ever in touting their wares as healthful.  The
low-carb craze has now replaced the fat-free craze.  There are
soy products, organic products, healthy requests and choices,
leaner cuisine items and more.  Some items also offer fun - such
as ketchup with crazy colors.  And still others offer more
convenience such as lunch in a box.

Upon reading the Nutrition Facts label for these products, we
find that most have added sugar, fat, saturated fat and sodium.
They are also expensive when compared to items in their raw
states.

The bottom line for finding healthful food is very simple.  If it
looks like it comes from a farm versus a factory, then it is most
likely a great choice for a staple item.  This includes fruits,
vegetables, rice, beans, oatmeal, barley and whole-wheat
products. The animal products are best when very lean.  This
means egg whites versus whole eggs, lean meat, white poultry
without the skin, fish and non-fat dairy products.  Chances are,
if your grandmother could buy it, then it is a good choice!

Finally, expert advisor, Dr. James Kenney, has this advice for
protein, "There is no amount of chicken or fish that will not
raise LDL, but I would agree most people can eat modest amounts
of white meat poultry without the skin and fish and still keep
their LDL in the acceptable range.  However, these modest amounts
will do little to raise iron stores, so I still vote for beans
and clams."

Mother's Day Gift Ideas, Give The Gift Of Health
by Lynn Bode, CFT

Do you know a Mom that deserves a special gift this year for
Mother's Day? I'm sure you know at least one, if not more. Sure,
flowers can always brighten a Mom's day and a dinner out is
always appreciated. But, doesn't she deserve something more
personal, something that won't wilt and something that lasts
longer than an evening? This year give that special woman a gift
that will improve her well being.

I'm talking about the gift of fitness. Improved fitness is a
gift that is invaluable to everyone. After all, what woman does
not want to look better, have more energy, and be healthier?
Plus, all Moms need to take time for themselves, but most are
reluctant to schedule that "me" time. So, give them a gift that
will help encourage them to enjoy some alone time.

When you give a woman the gift of fitness, you are helping her
open a door to better health (both physically and mentally). I
can't think of a more thoughtful gift that shows the recipient
how much you care about their well being. By giving the gift of
fitness you are providing them with unlimited health benefits.
And, it's a gift that you can truly feel proud to give.

Of course, we all know that exercise can help people stay slim
and fit. But, do you also know about all the other great
benefits of exercising? Daily physical activity reduces stress
and can help you sleep better. Fitness has been linked to
reducing the risk of some diseases and to warding off depression.
Researchers also believe that strength training can help prevent
osteoporosis. Not to mention that exercise also improves self-
esteem, increases stamina and ultimately helps you be able to do
continuous work for longer.

All Moms would find these fitness benefits incredibly invaluable.
If she is like most of us, she's probably even mentioned how she
would like to drop a few pounds or just get in better shape. By
giving the gift of fitness you are helping provide her with
extra motivation (which is one of the biggest obstacles in
getting fit). She may be more motivated to actually get fit
because she doesn't want to feel guilty for ignoring such a
thoughtful gift (personal training gift certificates and gym
memberships are especially good for helping with motivation).

While fitness gifts are incredibly valuable, they don't have to
be expensive. Gifts can cost as little as $5 or range into the
$100s of dollars. Here are a few suggestions in the various
price ranges:

Under $15:
. Resistance Band
. Dumbbells
. Jump Rope
. Exercise Mat

$15 - $35
. Fitness Ball
. Online Personal Training Program (custom designed for the gift
  recipient)
. Home Exercise Video
. Heart Rate Monitor

Over $35
. Full dumbbell and barbell set
. BOSU
. Bicycle
. Yoga Kit

Giving something that supports health and wellness will be
appreciated for years to come and may even turn someone's life
around. The gift of fitness will make her feel special - she'll
know that someone cared enough to give her the opportunity to
improve her health. And, giving a gift that will help someone
lead a healthier life is also one of the most rewarding gifts
you can give. So why spend another Mother's Day searching for
the perfect gift only to end up with the same old things?
Surprise her this year and give the gift that comes from the
heart and truly keeps on giving throughout summer and beyond.

Younger Next Year: A Guide to Living Like
50 Until You're 80 and Beyond
by Chris Crowley, Henry S. Lodge

Turn back your biological clock. A breakthrough book for men--as
much fun to read as it is persuasive--Younger Next Year draws on
the very latest science of aging to show how men 50 or older can
become functionally younger every year for the next five to ten
years, and continue to live like fifty-year-olds until well into
their eighties. To enjoy life and be stronger, healthier, and
more alert. To stave off 70% of the normal decay associated with
aging (weakness, sore joints, apathy), and to eliminate over 50%
of all illness and potential injuries. This is the real thing, a
program that will work for anyone who decides to apply himself
to "Harry's Rules."
