Sorry, we do not accept anonymous columns. The weekly deadline is 7:00 PM Eastern Time on Thursday - NO EXCEPTIONS! Late submissions are held over for the following week. Reviews of mainstream books are welcome and we encourage reviews of indies and self published material as we feel that material deserves more exposure to the general public. If you write intelligent, coherent, and timely reviews of any comic book it will almost always be printed, so give us a shot. Commentary on the state of the industry, and personal observations and reflections related to comics are *most* likely to be included in our publication. PLEASE, no material on Gaming, role playing, collectible card games or other hobbies or collectibles other than comic books. That also includes plugs for web pages UNLESS they are concerned with print comic books. We do not promote web comics per se, only the printed media. SEND US YOUR WORK ----------------- We also accept product for review purposes. Advanced copies of comic books will not be returned but any comic books sent to us *will* be reviewed in the ComicBook Net Emag in the column MY VIEW. Send material to be reviewed to: David L. LeBlanc 84 Heather Circle Jefferson, MA 01522-1419 Material is generally reviewed in the order received and be advised that we work a few weeks in advance so your review may not be in the magazine immediately. Advanced copies are therefore encouraged so the review will occur prior to your product hitting the stores. These are non-zipped text files. AOL search/keyword: aol://4400:3990 _____________________________________________________________________ _ --------------------------------------------------------------------- - [1] On the Net David LeBlanc ComicBkNet@aol.com Let a "divisible by 25" issue get by last week without any recognition. As it should be. Everyone knows that is not such a big deal anymore. What is more important is variant covers again, for no particular reason other than to make more money - keep the count per issue high! Oy! Some of you might find the rest of this column too politically motivated, which it is not but that never stopped some before. So here are the recommended comics this week, after which you can tune out if you so wish. Don't write to me telling me this has no place in an emag about comics! Just don't read it. Do read these fine comics out this week: CARTOON BOOKS Bone #55, $2.95 <----------------Pick of the Week! (LAST ISSUE) DC COMICS Aquaman #19, $2.50 Fables #26, $2.50 Fallen Angel #12, $2.95 Global Frequency #12 (Of 12), $2.95 Green Arrow #39, $2.50 Hero #17, $2.50 Identity Crisis #1 (Of 7), $3.95 Worlds Best Comics The Silver Age DC Archives Sampler, $0.99 DIGITAL WEBBING Digital Webbing Presents #15, $2.95 IMAGE COMICS PVP #7, $2.95 MARVEL COMICS Identity Disc #1 (Of 5), $2.99 Ultimate X-Men #47, $2.25 RORSCHACH ENTERTAINMENT Lucifer Fawkes Orcus Ex Machina, $3.50 There is something of graver concern that will not go away soon. Some think that a fixed date for transition or a change of administrations or some other seminal event will lesson the threat to ourselves and free thinking people through out the world. It won't. Those to aspire to power have all the answers, until they get there. But war is a plague that we loosed on ourselves by our very nature and sadly will not go away in our lifetime. Something got me thinking of a poem I heard back in the seventies and after some research I managed to find it. It was presented, at least to the majority of Americans, on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour at a time when the country was just about to start trying to heal the wounds of the Vietnam War. The sources on the net are in conflict as to who recited it. Some say John Denver, some say Steve Martin. As I recall it was one of the writers and frequent performer, Mason Williams. It matters not. The message is clear and needs to be passed to each generation. It is not about Vietnam or any war in particular. We can sometimes agree that some wars are necessary for the greater good. Sometimes we enter war to stop evil. And sometimes, mostly, they begin over who will own what. We can all agree, as General Sherman put it, "War is Hell." So here is a poem about the nature of war, how it came to be and how we can hope to stop it forever. THE BOX by Kendrew Lascelles Once upon a time in the land of hush-a-bye, around about the wondrous days of yore, They came across a sort of box Bound up with chains and locked with locks And labeled, 'Kindly do not touch, it's war.' A decree was issued 'round about - All with a flourish and a shout And a gaily colored mascot Tripping lightly on before - 'Don't fiddle with that deadly box or break the chains or pick the locks And please don't ever mess about with war.' Well the children understood, Children happen to be good And were just as good around the time of yore. They didn't try to pick the locks Or break into that deadly box And never tried to play about with war. Mommies didn't either Sisters, Aunts nor Grannies neither 'Cos they were quiet and sweet and pretty In those wondrous days of yore, Well very much the same as now And not the ones to blame somehow For opening up that deadly box of war, But someone did... Someone battered in the lid And spilled the insides out across the floor, A sort of bouncy bumpy ball made up of flags and guns and all The tears and the horror and the death That goes with war. It bounced right out And went bashing all about And bumping into everything in store And what is sad and most unfair was that it didn't really seem to care Much who it bumped, or why, Or what, or for. It bumped the children mainly And I'll tell you this quite plainly, It bumps them everyday and more and more And leaves them dead and burned and dying Thousands of them sick and crying, 'Cos when it bumps it's very, very sore. There is a way to stop the ball, It isn't very hard at all, All it takes is wisdom And I'm absolutely sure We could get it back into the box And bind the chains and lock the locks But no one seems to want to save the children anymore. Well that's the way it all appears 'Cos it's been bouncing around for years and years In spite of all the wisdom wizzed Since those wondrous days of yore, And the time they came across that box Bound up with chains and locked with locks And labeled, 'Kindly do not touch, it's war.' ***** Everyone, pray for peace. Godspeed Ray Charles, and thanks for the tunes. And my final thoughts this week are of the man who saw mutual assured destruction as insane and worked his plan to end the cold war. What a different world it would be now if he had not lived. Your final battle is over Mr. President, rest in peace. So I'm sure that the in-jokes probably come from him. Randy Barrett [Next time I am going to check the credits. - D.L.] +++++ Subj: Thank you for the praise! Date: 6/10/2004 12:30:22 AM Eastern Daylight Time From: fanzing@fanzing.com To: ComicBkNet@aol.com David, Thank you so much for your recent praise of our story "Melvin and Marvin Middler, Time Meddlers." I've been anxious to hear some feedback, and yours really cheered me up on a day that had so far been pretty bad (rain has water damaged my comic collection and Brad Meltzer just killed off a character I've wanted to write for 20 years). I'm also going to point out the review to the artist, Phil Meadows; as he's finishing some artwork for our next story, I'm sure he could use the encouragement. By the way, our next story will be "Metro Med" and we're entering it in a contest. Similar to American Idol, it's called Small Press Idol and we need every vote we can get to win. You can see our entry below. -- Michael Hutchison, writer and editor Please vote for our new project to win Small Press Idol (the comic version of American Idol). We need YOUR vote! http://www.fanzing.com/metromed/ _____________________________________________________________________ _ --------------------------------------------------------------------- - [3] [TRIVIA CONTEST] Due to costs, customs regulations, and logistical difficulties: THIS CONTEST IS OPEN TO RESIDENTS OF THE CONTIGUOUS 48 U.S. STATES! Known originally as "the Great Usenet Comics Poll", the Squiddies have been awarded every year since 1984. The Squiddies were named after Suicide Squid rec.arts.comics mascot--a mythical comic book character accidentally created in April 1991 when Mitsuhiro Sakai wanted to ask about developments in the series SUICIDE SQUAD, but typed "i" instead of "a". The 2003 Squiddies were administered by Carl Henderson and Johanna Draper Carlson. Squiddies.org is maintained by Todd VerBeek.
