THE Comic Book Net WEB PAGE http://members.aol.com/ComicBkNet ---------------- If you have access to the World Wide Web, please stop by and visit our web page! On our web page, you can find the latest issue of our E-Mag, as well as all back issues and an annotated index. You'll also find important information and other neat features like links to the HTML version of the current issue of this magazine at DIGITAL WEBBING, [http://www.digitalwebbing.com/cbem], some of the comic companies and creators' web pages and many other Comic Book related links! _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [1] On the Net David LeBlanc ComicBkNet@aol.com Pay Attention! There will be NO issue next week. The Mrs. and I are going to go to a wedding out of state and spend some vacation time together. The following week we are also going to a wedding on Friday night in New Hampshire. So, the Emag will likely be sent on Thursday that week. Don't panic if it comes out on Saturday instead. Shut off the computer for a change and go outside. It's Summer after all; well except for our friends down under. Free Comic Book Day was huge at That's Entertainment. The crowd came in right when the doors opened and we had a steady flow nearly all day. It was also the first day of the summer sale with 25% off back issues, Trade paperbacks and books, action figures, busts and Magic singles with discounts on other things as well, like used games, and DVDs. Combine this with free comics and three creators signing books and sketches from 1-5 and we had a something for everyone. The line for the creators grew and grew as the afternoon wore on. Jim Smith III, Paul Ryan and Kurt Busiek are all terrific ambassadors for the industry. They engaged the crowd and made the fans feel special. At one point I got into a joke contest with Kurt, who had some real groaners. He would fit right in if we hired him - a couple of us try to out-pun each other on occasion. Anyway, it was a blast joking with Kurt. We all had fun. More fun this week with these new comics: ABOUT COMICS Dnagents Vol 1 Born Orphans TPB, $9.95 <--------Pick of the Week! Kurt was part of the team that reinvented the Valiant heroes for Acclaim. He wrote NINJACK for them. I was fortunate enough to get advanced previews of most of the Valiant Hero titles for review. I also sent letters of comment on all of them and most of those letters were printed. Well, I had a long letter printed in NINJACK #1 and now I have a copy signed by the writer. A nice addition to the special portion of my collection. SEE YOU IN TWO WEEKS! I would think that I would qualify for some sort of No-prize! [Bob guessed Richard Nixon as last week's trivia answer but he was incorrect and too late. I told him Nixon was a real person, not a character in a comic; which prompted the above response - DL] By the way, thanks for the e-zine! It's great!!! Bob ps I thought that you would like to know that I'm doing my bit to foster the next generation of comic book fans. I have 16-month old twins, Sabina and Alex, who can identify Batman and Spider-Man. I took Alex to the local comic shop for Free Comic Book Day and he flipped out! He spent the entire time pointing and shouting out, "Spider-Man! Batman! Ooooo...wow!". He got the Spider-Man comic and we picked out the Teen Titans comic for Sabina. Hopefully this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship with sequential art! B- [They are never too young to start. Contact: Ed Dukeshire eduke@digitalwebbing.com HAVERHILL, MA, July 6, 2004 - Blizzard Entertainment VP Chris Metzen makes his comic debut in DIGITAL WEBBING PRESENTS #16, the groundbreaking collaborative anthology. After leading development of Blizzard's signature games Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft, Metzen brings his "Soldier: 76" to the pages of DWP. "The story is about a weathered American soldier returning home after many years to find his homeland fractured by the second American Civil War," explains Metzen. "Ultimately, he must make peace with the ghosts of his past before he chooses sides and restores the American Dream." The story is illustrated by Greg Scott (SWORD OF DRACULA, GOTHAM CENTRAL). Metzen has nothing but praise for the popular artist: "Greg's style's so cinematic and gritty - it really helped me to conceptualize the story. Greg's natural aversion to capes and spandex really fit with the setting I'm trying to build and gives the piece a certain authenticity." In addition, Michael Colbert and James Woodward bring the fully- painted "Crazy Mary" to DWP #16. "I knew I wanted to illustrate it the minute I read the script," explains artist Woodward. "It deals with the subjective nature of reality, which allowed me to do some stylistic and surreal panels." "Crazy Mary is about a mercenary who's had genetic and cybernetic enhancements done by the government. Unfortunately, she's developed visions (or hallucinations depending on your perspective) - that's how she got the name Crazy Mary," Woodward continues. A. David Lewis (MORTAL COILS) raves about "Crazy Mary": "'Crazy Mary' is both brilliantly disturbing and disturbingly brilliant. Push past the traditional, tired girl-with-guns stereotype -- break through to a world of lost teddy bears, leeching brain- squid, and a miraculous woman there to save the day while reveling in the chaos of it all. You'd have to be insane to ignore Crazy Mary." Colbert will be doing mid-July signings in Los Angeles area at Golden Apple Comics on Melrose Ave., Things from Another World at Universal Citywalk, and Toy Mandala on Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks. Also featured in DWP #16 is "Bliss" by Chad Lambert and Amanda Morley. "Bliss is the examination of the final seconds before death. As a tormented soul ends his life, he's hoping for his final seconds to be peaceful," writer Lambert elaborates. "Love & Paramnesia" by Troy Wall and Steve Morris offers an unlikely romance tale. "Just Another Wednesday" by Ev Jameson and Justin Peterson and "Spook'd" by Jeffery Stevenson and Comic Book Idol finalist Seth Damoose round out the issue. This issue also features DIGITAL WEBBING PRESENTS' first painted cover, featuring Crazy Mary, courtesy of James Woodward. DIGITAL WEBBING PRESENTS #16 (32 pages, full color cover, b/w interiors, $2.95 US, $3.75 CAN) will be on sale July 14th. Cheers! Amy (review of S2 coming soon!) Indian Peter Parker Spider-Man gets Indian make-over Superhero Spider-Man has had a make-over for a new series of comic books launching in India. The character will no longer be known as Peter Parker - but will become the young Pavitr Prabhakar. He will also have a more modest costume, wearing a dhoti, the loincloth worn by men in India. There will initially be four comic books produced, released to coincide with the Spider-Man 2 movie. The first film was a huge success in India. The re-invented Spider-Man is a joint project between Marvel Comics and Gotham Entertainment Group, which holds the license in India. "We feel this is one of the most exciting and unique projects in comic history," said Gotham Entertainment Group chief executive Sharad Devarajan. "Unlike traditional translations of American comics, Spider-Man India will become the first-ever 'transcreation', where we reinvent the origin of a Western property." Spider-Man would become an Indian boy in Mumbai and dealing with local problems and challenges, he added. Spider-Man India will interweave local customs, culture and mystery to make it more relevant to the readers, set against the backdrop of monuments including the Taj Mahal and the Gateway of India. The Green Goblin villain will be replaced by Rakshasa, an Indian mythological demon that has shape-shifting abilities. Mr. Devarajan hopes to publish the comics in as many local languages as possible, with the first one appearing in August. Marvel president of publishing, Gui Karyo said: "Marvel has continuously done its best to push the boundaries of traditional comic books and to look for new venues for our characters." When the first Spider-Man movie opened in India, it took 67m rupees (?940,000) in its first four days of release - and made more in its first weekend than any Hollywood movie yet released in India. http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/2/hi/entertainment/3836797.stm +++++ Outside the Panels: Tomer Hanuka, Serious About Comics The Jewish Week this week profiles New York cartoonist Tomer Hanuka, whose latest issue of his popular ongoing Bipolar comic book series co-created with his twin brother Asaf has just been announced for November 2004 release from Alternative Comics. Tomer and Asaf Hanuka are twins. They share a similar genetic structure but were raised in different places. This condition creates a special tension between their stories and styles and is the foundation of Bipolar. Asaf, with writer Etgar Keret is telling the story of Pizzeria Kamikaze about a guy with a broken heart who committed suicide only to find himself at Pizza Kamikaze, a regular day job in a world where everyone died before and now it's about passing time. Tomer is telling personal stories with a twisted time sense that will put you right now, a year ago, and in the future. Bipolar #5 is scheduled to be released in November 2004 from Alternative Comics. The fifth issue is presented in two stories: The first: After finding his lost love, Mordy discovers that you can't trust anything in the land of suicides. Death, finger food, bureaucratic blunders, and one undercover angel roil the climatic last chapter of Asaf Hanuka and Etgar Keret's "Pizzeria Kamikaze." The second: Aquaflesh by Tomer Hanuka - Drowning in alcohol and self pity, the washed-up Aquaflesh gets his last chance to confront the moment that changed it all. http://www.thejewishweek.com/news/newscontent.php3?artid=9566 From The Jewish Week, June 25, 2004 Serious About Comics For in-demand Israeli illustrator up for a big industry award, the quintessentially Jewish genre has colored his world. Liel Leibovitz - Staff Writer Chances are, you've seen his work before. His are the boldly colored illustrations in The New Yorker (accompanying reviews of shows such as "8 Days Later" and movies such as "Bon Voyage"), Time (a story earlier this year about European dance music), TV Guide (a piece about the Fox series "24") or The New York Times Magazine (a cover last year about North Korean teenagers escaping to the south), with much shadowing and light play and figures with large, expressive eyes. Yet, chances are that unless you look carefully at the fine print beneath the picture, you have no idea who Tomer Hanuka is. Introducing him is a tricky task: He has two titles: during the day, he is one of the leading illustrators working in New York City and the recipient of the national Society of Illustrators' gold and silver medals. At night, he is a comic book artist, drawing, together with his twin brother Assaf who lives in Israel, a critically acclaimed comic book titled "Bipolar," which garnered him a nomination in the best cover artist category for a Harvey Award, the comics industry's equivalent of the Oscars. He is also an outsider, an Israeli living in New York, a foreigner working in a quintessentially American art form. ... In an arrangement with the major auto maker, the eigoMANGA team, including Jeremy Ray, artist and creator of "Extinction Level Event," has designed advertising materials to promote Scion's XA and XB models. Proposed concepts showcase characters from "Extinction Level Event," "The Monkey Tale" and "Cool Downbeat," all stories featured in eigoMANGA's flagship manga anthology, RUMBLE PAK. Each design features the eigoMANGA characters posing dramatically with Scion vehicles, or piloting the vehicles themselves. Ray describes the artwork he's done for Scion as "a sketchy version of American comic art." Oscar Gutierrez, Jr., General Manager and Head of Operations and Sales at eigoMANGA, hopes that the success of this joint effort will open the door to further promotional partnerships between the companies. +++++ MAJESCO LICENSES EXCLUSIVE COMIC BOOK RIGHTS FOR 'BLOODRAYNE' FRANCHISE TO ECHO 3 WORLDWIDE First Comic Book to Coincide with October Ship of 'BloodRayne 2' Video Game EDISON, NJ, July 8th, 2004 - Strategically exploiting the appeal and popularity of its BloodRayne video games, Majesco (OTC BB: MJSH), a leading publisher and distributor of interactive entertainment products, today announced an exclusive worldwide agreement with Echo 3 Worldwide to publish BloodRayne as a series of original, full-color, one-shot comic books.
