X-STATIX #24 Reviewer: Mitch Brown, mitchbrown@comixfan.cjb.net Story Title: The Good and the Famous Part Six: Mr. Sensitive Vs. Iron Man Quick Rating: Excellent! "I might be naked...but I'm no quitter." Writer: Peter Milligan Cover and Pencils: Michael Allred Inks: Nick Craine Colors: Laura Allred Lettering: Blambot's Nate Piekos Editor, Assisting: Jennifer Lee Editor: Axel Alonso Chief: Joe Quesada Publisher: Dan Buckley Well kids, there's only another two issues left in the wonderfully wild ride that has been X-Statix. The irony of the situation being that the "The Good and the Famous" storyline, and this issue in particular is probably the best that we have seen from this title since mutating from X-Force. X-Statix #24 sees a blazing return to the kind of fun, superhero satire and social commentary that made Milligan and Allred's X-Force such a hit in the first place. As soon as I held the cover in my hands, I knew we were in for a treat this issue. Mr. Sensitive/The Orphan is easily my favorite member of the cast, and seeing him clutching onto a Warner Bros- style cartoon anvil, descending upon the Invincible Iron Man, couldn't help but cast a smile across this reviewer's face. Based on that cover alone, I think this is the first week in quite a while that X-Statix has been at the top of my weekly reading pile. Hastily diving into the story itself on my train ride home from work, I found myself chuckling out loud by page two at the introduction of the "Church of the Naked Truth", a secretive nudist cult based in Southern France, who's compound serves as the backdrop for this issue's main event - Guy Smith vs Tony Stark. By page twelve - possibly the first-ever naked superhero fight in Marvel history (yes, I'm serious) - I was laughing hysterically, much to the concern of the unfortunate woman sitting next to me. (I briefly considered explaining the source of my amusement, but figured that pointing excitedly at two burly, naked guys grappling could possibly worry her even more.) As if the idea of a naked, armor-less Tony Stark slugging it with Mr. Sensitive in his birthday suit isn't funny enough, Milligan colors this most unique of superhero battles, with some of his most outrageously funny dialogue yet. The opening banter between Tony and Guy is priceless, as Stark reveals that he was formerly a big fan of X-Force, even sending a letter of complaint to X- Statix management regarding the name change, signed "From a disappointed X-Fan". Everything from religious hypocrisy, America's international relations, to the upcoming return of the Cable-led X-Force, comes under fire from Milligan's trademark humor. There's not much more that can be said about Mike Allred's artwork. Every single issue of both X-Force and X-Statix that he has graced with his pencils, have been marvelously kitch pop-art masterpieces, consistent in quality and style. X-Statix #24 is no exception. Allred's clever use of camera angles and shadowing techniques during Guy and Tony's naked duel, allows the action to appear natural and uncensored, while still managing to obscure the pair's genitalia enough to ensure Marvel's PSR+ rating stays intact. Appropriately, Allred's style makes the entire issue look as though it had been dragged, kicking and screaming out the pages of an old Tales of Suspense, remixed by David Craine and Laura Allred into crazy post-modern Warhol painting. Next issue sees the conclusion of "The Good and the Famous" with a lot of unanswered questions still left to address. Will Doop gets his brain back? Where's Thor? Are X-Statix really as completely stupid as they seem? Who built Doop in the first place? How can Milligan top this? Will we ever see a Surrender Monkey ongoing series? And, why, oh why does this series have to end? ART: 4.5 STORY: 4.5 OVERALL: 4.5 _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [14] Multiverse Observer and Explorer Reviews Paul Dale Roberts Silhouet98@cs.com [Paul promotes amateur and professional comic book artwork, scripts, storylines, and unpublished comic books with a newsletter called the Peoples' Comic Book Newsletter. Its website is at Jazma Comic Book Newsletter Productions at http://www.jazmaonline.com/ He is also a prominent letter hack, as anyone who reads comic letter pages would know. He is in production of his own self-published comic book called The Legendary Dark Silhouette and has copyrighted over 600 characters for his Jazma Universe.] SPOILER WARNING: THE FOLLOWING COLUMN MAY REVEAL SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF THE PLOTS OF SOME COMIC BOOKS, OR THE ENTIRE STORY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. MOE Sidenote: As the Jazma Universe portal opens anything and everything can enter through the gates of the Jazma Stargate. As I write this, out steps no other than Bilbo Baggins of the Lord of the Rings, along with Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi from "Star Wars - The Cestus Deception", Lord Tavis of Curgh from "Rules of Ascension" by David B. Coe. Of course for some unknown reason Bilbo is carrying the book called "Comix - The Underground Revolution by Dez Skinn". As I patiently wait to see if anything else comes out of the Jazma Stargate, then I see no other than Jazma's own Jet-X with Lilau, Wolverine from the Marvel's Universe X-Men group, Mahoro an android warrior from the Manga Maho Romantic comic book, Mitsuo of Eerie Queerie, Baudelaire siblings of "A Series of Unfortunate Events", Welkin Quinn of the "Earthborn", Black Cepters of "Culdcept", Kerla Bai-Sha of "On Fire's Wings" and the land of Arukan. As I stop them from continuing on, I ask Wolverine if he has anything to report in his Stargate journeys. Wolverine: "Nah, just saw a place called the Spiderwick Estate and I think it would be a great place to keep some new mutie students at! I got work to do, I'm outta here!" Bilbo Baggins: "If you have a chance read all about underground comics in this book by Dez Skinn! I kind of think the Freak Brothers are pretty cool!" Mahoro with Jet-X and Lilau: "I introduced Jet-X and Lilau to my ways. Jet-X and Lilau both have the warrior spirit like I do, so if you want to know something about my comic book, here it is": Name: Maho Romantic: Automatic Maiden 1 Publisher: Tokyopop Story: Bunjuro Nakayama Art: Bow Ditama Price: $9.99 Overviewed by: Mahoro. Edited by Paul Dale Roberts, MOE Comments: Mahoro is sweet, sexy and lethal! Mahoro is a government battle android turned domestic servant. She has been assigned to be a companion for a young man that is an orphan. This young man's hormones kick in when he sees this very sexy female android that not only does housework, windows, cooks his meals, but she also gives him very nice baths on a personal one- on-one level. But with her background, will her past haunt her? Will Mahoro be more trouble than she is worth? Another word from Mahoro: "Yep, read my comic book from Tokyopop and learn all about me! While you're at it, pick up The Spiderwick Chronicles Book 1: The Field Guide by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black! If you like Harry Potter you just may like The Spiderwick Chronicles!" In the background of the Jazma Stargate, I see no other than Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi battling a horde of evil Black Cepters from the book Culdcept. As Obi-Wan Kenobi keeps the Black Cepters at bay, he mumbles out the next overview: Name: Culdcept 1 Publisher: Tokyopop Creator: Shinya Kaneko Price: $9.99 Overviewed by: Obi-Wan Kenobi, edited by Paul Dale Roberts, MOE Comments: In the magical land of Bablashea, card sharp relics have been scattered throughout the lands far and wide. The cards are part of the ancient Culdcept (the book that created the universe). Whoever collects all of the cards will have the power of the gods. The Cepters are special beings that have more knowledge of the cards and if they collect all of the cards, they will have control of the universe. The Black Cepters destroy city after city in search of the cards. Najaran is an apprentice Cepter and he sets out on a quest to destroy the evil Black Cepters. This story is based on the Dreamcast and PS2 Video Games! Now a word from Najaran: "Learn all about the mysterious cards that are foretold in Culdcept. Learn all about the beings known as Cepters and learn about the evil side of Cepters known as Black Cepters, the very same ones that Obi-Wan Kenobi was battling. Also, if you have a chance pick up "A Series of Unfortunate Events: Book the First: The Bad Beginning" by Lemony Snicket. A story about a group of kids that have nothing but bad luck on their side. If it weren't for bad luck, they wouldn't have any luck at all! Find it at a Border's Books near you!" Name: Eerie Queerie 2 Publisher: Tokyopop Creator: Shuri Shiozu Price: $9.99 Comments: Mitsuo discovers a dead actor that has been haunting the local acting school. Hasunuma collapes in the middle of rehearsal. Is this a sign of possession of some sort? The injuries that Hasunuma obtains separates the soul from the body. With all of the strange events that are happening to the students at this acting school, it is up to Mitsuo to find peace among the restless. Will the production become a new Little Shop of Horrors? Now a word from Mitsuo: "Besides reading about me in Eerie Queerie, check out the new fantasy book called "On Fire's Wings by Christine Golden", which is a story about Kevla Bai-Sha Jashemi and Kha-Tahmu a rebel prince. They must save the land of Arukan from evil darkness! Also, check out the sci-fi book called "The Earthborn by Paul Collins", this is the story of Welkin Quinn. Welkin is a "skyborn", that means he lived his entire life on a spaceship. You will meet a gang called the Jabbers. The story has the Skyborn fighting the Earthborn. A story that will grip you to your seat and is found at Border's Books! As the Jazma Stargate fades away, the characters scatter into unknown lands from whence they came. Multiverse Observer and Explorer signing off until next time..... Name: The Wang - The Big One Publisher: Squid Works Comics Creator: Stan Yan Price: $9.95 Website: www.squidworks.com Email: stan@squidworks.com Comments: You may have heard about this comic book, it's the one that Diamond Comic Book Distributors Inc. refused to run the listing with the actual cover image citing that they wanted to maintain a "PG" environment with the catalog, and the cover image was "too PG-13". The cover features a picture of a vibrator along with some of the characters of this controversial comic book. The story is about Eugene Wang, graduating student and the spiritual, neurotic, and erotic awakening of he and the very few other people in his lonely life. The comic book is as funny and zany as Revenge of the Nerds to Something about Mary. You will get a kick out of the main character Eugene Wang. You will root for him, you will turn away from him in disgust, you will feel sorry for him, you will want to give the guy a hug! Eugene is a complex character that is hard to figure out at times. Hilarious times as Eugene is busy studying for school, I got a kick out of watching Eugene talk with his mom over the phone and in one part his mom says..."let your frail old mom carry her groceries by herself", as Eugene makes up one excuse after another to keep from going shopping with dear old mom. His mom is quite the character. Eugene has a girlfriend he calls "Chief" and his girlfriend is a very demanding domineering woman that wants sex by her command. Eugene pulls away from her, he finds her too commanding and forceful. When you open up this comic book, don't be surprised to find some of the characters carousing at an adult video store or seeing Eugenes' mom in bed with his girlfriend "Chief", both holding onto their vibrators. Is the mom a lezbo? Hmmm...go figure. There is an interview with Peter Wacker in this absurd comic book and some very funny stuff that is done loosely based on Star Wars and a group counseling session! After reading The Wang - The Big One, I immediately became a socially sexually deprived deviate like my hero Eugene Wang! _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [15] My View David LeBlanc ComicBkNet@aol.com David LeBlanc is the Editor of the Comic Book Network Electronic Magazine; which won the prestigious Eagle Award for Favorite Comic Book Ezine in 2001. He is a long-time fan of comics and the electronic media; having been the moderator of BBS comics forums on WME, FIDONET and the Comic Book Network. David's favorite motivational phrase is: BEHOLD THE TURTLE, HE ONLY MAKES PROGRESS WHEN HE STICKS HIS NECK OUT! YOUR ANGELS SPEAK 32 pages, black & white, $2.95 by Guy Gilchrist guy@yourangelsspeak.com Angel Publishing division of Gilchrist Publishing PO Box 1194 Canton, CT 06019 www.yourangelsspeak.com This will be a very different review as this comic is like no other I have ever seen. It is a compilation of strips, two on each page, each only one panel oriented on the long side. That is not the unusual part. These are not humor panels or even strung together to tell a story - they are inspirational drawings of angels with a few words or phrases as a theme. They cover a multitude of situations and each one strives to illustrate the words and add depth to the meaning. They range from a simple pose - an angel with bowed-head praying and the phrase is "It takes strength to ask for help" to something more complex like the female angel with torn robe, clinging to driftwood on a storm ravaged shore, wind and wave blowing in her face and the phrase: "There is no room in my heart for fear. For my heart is full with my boundless faith in God ~ who will see me through any storm." Another female is in a garden bent over some flowers and the words say "Tend to your soul as you would your garden. On the other hand there are two angels clad in armor and sword with the phrase between them "You're in a war against evil. Everyday hate, greed, ego, lust and lies - just a few of the traps He'll throw your way. Faith is your armor. Put your war clothes on." The art is as inspiring as the text. Guy has a lot of talent. He provides a mix of faces, races and body types. Angels are multi-cultural evidently and that is appealing. They also have a more modern look, mostly from the hair styles. He did not stick with one traditional norm and it makes it easier to identify with them. He is equally adept on close ups, long shots, and a variety of details and backgrounds. It is no wonder that this strip appears in newspapers and periodicals as distributed exclusively by Unite Features Syndicate. There is much more to his individual styles in other forms which you can discover by browsing his website. Whether you have a strong faith in whatever denomination you participate in or are just finding your way you may find things to ponder in this book. It matters not if you believe in angels either. You can still find words of wisdom, strength and hope here. The art will stun you and just maybe you will want to spread the word with an extra copy or two. Go to the web site and see what I mean. THE WATCH: CASUS BELLI #1-3 24 pages, full color, $3.25 Phosphorescent Comics www.phosphorescent.net [#1 on sale now, #2 in August, #3 in Oct.] comics@phosphorescent.com.au Writing - Christian Read Art - Stewart McKenny Color - Annette Kwok Lettering - Jason Kovacs This mini-series picks up after the last two volumes and involves a world where people with powers have appeared over the last twelve years. One faction is lead by Lucifer who believes that humans and superhumans should not mix. His group attacked a Chinese island and declared it a separate state attracting some 200 more superhumans to join the cause. The Chinese retaliated five years later and were soundly defeated. The world has been waiting for Lucifer's next move. Finally, in 2002, the present, they make their move and invade Beijing. The good guys are a team called the Watch. They are a private group organized by Jack Hawkins, the world's most powerful telepath (hmm...) with 7 others ranging from super strong, invulnerable to gravity and kinetic energy manipulator. They have been hired to hold off the Lucifer group for six hours while the UN super team, called Unite, finish a mission fixing a geothermal problem in Sweden. And just to complicate things, there are others lurking around that have their own agendas. Things get pretty crowded by issue #3 so you really have to read the beginning chapter to get the big picture. The entire story is actually interesting once the action begins. More that just a slugfest it is well plotted exercise on how each person uses their special gift to defeat an opponent. Sometimes it appears hopeless, a poor match, and yet most often the good guy finds a way you might not have thought about. The real plot twist come later on as an a dead priest from the prior series tracks down the Watch to expose Jack's secrets. There is a bigger secret that involves them all and will lead to more stories down the road. I enjoyed the series and the art was pleasant enough. The colors are vibrant and I thought the layouts worked well. Christian has a intricate story to tell but may confuse some with too much going on at once. However the concepts are good and the resolution works. We haven't seen enough of the Lucifer cult to get to know them, except for their skills in fighting. The Watch is an interesting mix that is slowly improving and worth seeing for yourself. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [16] New Comic Book Releases List [NCRL] by Charles LePage chuck@comiclist.com http://www.comiclist.com New Comic Book Releases List for Wednesday, 7/14/2004, compiled by Charles LePage with information from Suncoast Comics.
