Title: Superman/Batman # 11 Publisher: DC Writer: Jeph Loeb Penciler: Michael Turner Inker: Peter Steigerwald Price: $ 2.95 US, $ 4.50 Can Comments: The tension is high as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Barda invade Apokalypse. Superman is mad at everyone but most at Darkseid for kidnapping Kara. Batman gets eaten by a dog. It will be interesting to see how he escapes. It was smart of him to pick up some of Mr. Miracle's gadgets before coming to Apokalypse. Now it wasn't entirely a surprise to see Kara is with Darkseid. The good guys are all prisoners now, so whats next? It is so fascinating to read Batman and Superman's thoughts. They are so different, from different worlds, different lives, yet they are the best of friends. It was nice to see Wonder Woman armed with a shield and spear. It is also great to see Big Barda back in action. She has been gone for to long. The heroes and villains are magnificently drawn. Darkseid looks every bit the demi-god. Title:Marvel Age: Spider-Man # 7 Publisher: Marvel Plot: Stan Lee & Steve Ditko Writer: Todd Dezago Penciler: Jonboy Meyers Inker: Pat Davidson Price: $ 2.25 US, $ 3.25 Can Comments: The cover will captivate you, its Spidey vs the Living Brain. The Living Brain's body is outstanding. The colors are visually eye catching. Spidey's acrobatics look great. The art whenever Peter opens his mouth he seems to lose his chin. The fight with the Living Brain is fast and exciting. The interplay Peter has with Flash Thompson is fun to watch. He has to hold back or risk putting Flash in the hospital. It is conveyed that Peter is still a teenager and the writer shows this well. The second story has a cute and fun fight between Spidey and the Human Totch. Its beautifully illustrated. This first meeting between the Torch and Spidey shows that they are both still young and immature. This series sticks to the basics good story and good art which makes a great comic. Title: Amazing Fantasy # 1 Publisher: Marvel Writers: Fiona Avery Penciler: Mark Brooks Inker: Jaime Mendosa Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.25 Can Comments: Anya is a caring, kind teenage girl. She is also headstrong. Gangs of Wasp people and Spider people are fighting and little Anya gets caught in the middle. Poor girl, maybe. What was that bright flash? Anya is cute and tough. She will stand up to anybody for what she believes in. The writer brings this across. The cover is almost beyond words. The title fits Amazing Fantasy and the art is that. She may be a school girl but she looks every bit the hero. The art throughout the comic matches the cover. She is a short skinny teen and she looks it. Title: JLA # 101 Publisher: DC Writer: Chuck Austen Artist: Ron Garney Price: $ 2.25 US, $ 3.50 Can Comments: This is an emotional story and will bring tears to your eyes. A new super-hero shows up to help Superman save lives. The new hero dies leaving behind a wife and kids. All he ever wanted was to be like Superman and to join the JLA. Superman makes him a member. He deserved it he died a true hero. Chuck Austen has written a masterpiece here. This issue is so heart touching. Unfortunately the art is rather simplistic. There are no big super-hero battles. They are not needed. The art especially for this type of story was to cartoonish. Title: Marvel Knights: Spider-Man # 4 Publisher: Marvel Writer: Mark Millar Artists: Terry Dodson & Rachel Dodson Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.25 Can Comments: Spider-Man is in the fight of his life. After he was hospitalized by Electro the Vulture steps in to finish him off. The Black Cat shows up to help. The fight is brutal. It is well drawn as the feathers fly. The Black Cat is drawn sexy in her black tight fitting costume. The story well we have this intern that was working at the hospital when Spidey was brought in. He shows up at the Daily Bugle with pictures of Spidey without his mask. J.J,J, recognizes him of course. How will Spidey get out of this? Can Mark Millar the writer come up with a way out? This is a nice plot twist. Title: Alpha Flight # 5 Publisher: Marvel Writer: Scott Lobdel Penciler: Clayton Henry Inker: Mark Morales with Avalon Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.25 Can Comments: The opening introduction might just be the best part of the comic book. Scott is witty in his repartee as he tells us about how the comic has been received and is doing. So the original Alpha Flight isn't the original but Plodex aliens. They sure do look good, Guardian and the rest are drawn perfectly. Sasquatch is looking ferocious. It was great to see Sasquatch grab the Plodex Snowbird owl an "Splats" it on the floor. The cover has a magnificently drawn Major Maple Leaf on his flying horse with the rest of the team watching. The story is fun. The characters are fun to watch even the anarchist. Title: Captain America/Falcon # 5 Publisher: Marvel Writer: Priest Penciler: Joe Bennett Inker: Jack Jadson Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.25 Can Comments: The Falcon is using guns way to much. He doesn't need a gun. He's a super-hero who can almost hold his own in hand to hand with Cap. Why does he need a gun? There is a really cute scene of J. Jonah Jameson walking into his office to find Nick Fury, an Admiral and Robertson using the office. He just quietly leaves after a few questions and no answers. When the Falcon is arrested for violating National Security, believe it or not he shoots the Admiral point blank. He kills him in cold blood? Charged with treason and now murder. Will it fall to Cap to clear him? This issue has a new artistic team. For some reason Cap's shield is drawn with red and black circles. He is drawn more in the shadows. The Falcon's face is drawn to much in the shadows as well. Title: She-Hulk # 5 Publisher: Marvel Writer: Dan Slott Penciler: Paul Pelletier Inker: Tom Simmons Price: $ 2.9 US, $ 4.25 Can Comments: We start off with an explosive cover. She-Hulk punches her way into your heart. She is beautiful and tough. The new art team now this is an art team. The She-Hulk looks gorgeous on her date with John Jameson. This entire series has just improved one hundred percent. It is great having this new art team. They definitely know how to draw. Seeing all the teeny tiny villains is cute. Having them all crawl on She-Hulk looked good. Wait until she finds out that they are there. The story is fun. Its well worth getting now for more than just the cover art but that is still the best part. Title: The Symbiotes # 1 Publisher: Drive Comics Writer: Davis R. Vaughn Artist: George Lippert Price: $ 2.95 US, $ 3.95 Can Comments: Wow the visuals are stunning. The City of Geraine with the lighting and colors looks fantastic. For sci-fi art this comic ranks with the best. There is a beautiful page with a space ship flying in for a landing, the building in the background looks archaic, the plants are lush, the clouds give you an alien feel with their rich colors. The aliens themselves have a realistic look. The police and Vah'hrats are two groups that are entertaining to watch. You get a look into the lives of the future Symbiotes. Gramps has some great moves. He is shown using his eskrimatta fighting fighting giant Venus Fly Traps. The drawings show off his fighting prowess brilliantly. General Tarik is a Raider which means He's 100% human and He's been augmented to be more than human. He's strong and fast and merciless. You are left with no doubt that you do not want to get in his way. His attitude comes through in the story. It will be interesting to see how the story develops. We have seen the characters, now they will have to be brought together. They are a diverse group. This comic is well worth checking out. Title: Kade: Pursuit # 1 Publisher: Arcana Writer: Sean O'Reilly Penciler: Eduardo Garcia INker: Ricardo Melendez Price: $ 2.95 US, $ 4.50 Can Comments: The cover by Paco Medina and Francisco Hennera has a hard to see monster in the background. Its red eyes with one half closed looks strange. Kade blends in to much so He's hard to even see. The warrior who feels nothing joins up with Ezra for a fierce battle against the Dire Bereavers. The battle is fast, furious and bloody. The Dire Bereavers are well drawn looking like green human bats without wings. Eduardo Garcia has a unique style which is hard to describe you'll have to see it for yourself. The story is a simple one Kade is out for revenge against Apollyon for his family's death. The series will cover all the adventures he has while he seeks Apollyon. There will be plenty of demons and warriors along the way if this issue is any indication. The second story "Kade: Abduction" is a short simple story about a young girl abducted. The Ogres are lumbering in their attacks, while Kade shows skill and speed. Their different fighting styles are well shown. Title: Kade: Pursuit # 2 Publisher: Arcana Writer: Sean O'Reilly Penciler: Eduardo Garcia Inker: Nancy Parrazales M. Price: $ 2.95 US, $ 4.50 Can Comments: Paco Medina and Francisco Herrera are the artists for this cover. Now this is a cover the beautiful Ezra stands out with Kade and demons in the background. Ezra's black costume looks gorgeous on her, her stomach and face show she is physically fit. Excellent cover. Kade and Kamric start this issue off fighting a demon horde. It is a great battle. There are a large variety of demons. The artist does have a vivid imagination. Than the story kind of bogs down as it fills in the past history of Apollyon. It picks up again as Kade is rescued by his companions. Kade seemed to be losing his will to go on but got it back after hearing in detail of his mother's murder. The second story "War Of The Vampyres" shows us Apollyon killing the Vampyre King and proclaiming himself a god. The artwork is computer generated and seems amateurish. The back is full of fan art and we see there are a lot of talented people out there. The back cover by Azhrarn is a fantastic fantasy drawing. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [10] What About Bob? Robert Taylor smsuso@core.com A Weekly Examination of Comics By Robert Taylor "You clearly do not understand what good writing is - you just care about what you want to happen. Otherwise you would appreciate what the writer is building up to." -A fan of Identity Crisis reacting to my 1/5 review of the book last week If there is one thing Identity Crisis is doing that is good for the comic industry, it is making fans have spirited conversations among themselves about the pros and cons of such a miniseries and whether this kind of radical storytelling is good for the DCU. As far as I can tell, readers are split directly down the middle in reaction, no one "sort of" liking it. Inspired by several reactions to my reviews of the issues, I asked my friend and herorealm.com reviewer Jared Moraitis to face off against me in a friendly heated discussion about why he loves the book I loathe so completely. It should be fun, so look for it in an upcoming installment of "What About Bob?" Adventures of Superman 630 W: Greg Rucka A: Matthew Clark P: DC Comics G: 4/5 The creative team's best issue to date, but still very unbalanced. Some of the humor is frickin' hilarious, but the tie ins to continuity were unnecessary at best. Clark outdoes himself with the art, and appears to have finally found his voice on the series. Batman: Gotham Knights 55 W: A.J. Leiberman A: Al Barrionuevo P: DC Comics G: 1.5/5 "Holy series implosion, Batman!" Well, the story "ended" without giving us a point or a purpose. What was this arc even ABOUT? And it doubly sucks because Barrionuevo finally has a grasp on the art chores. Birds of Prey W: Gail Simone A: Ed Benes P: DC Comics G: 4/5 Another solid issue, though Benes shouldn't ink himself. Captain Marvel 25 W: Peter David A: Keith Giffen P: Marvel Comics G: 4.5/5 I have very mixed feelings on this. Parts of it are pure genius, but the entire thing reads like Peter David is having a temper tantrum and taking it out on Marvel and his characters. I dunno how to react, but I'm gonna recommend it because I think you'll like it even if you've never read an issue (not that it matters now) and because many of David's observations are so insightful as usual. Catwoman 1 W: Chuck Austen A: Tom Derenick P: DC Comics G: 3/5 The art is pretty, and for some reason it got me looking really forward to the movie, just to see how bad it is. BTW, I think this may be the first time I was turned off by anything Jim Lee drew. When I saw that cover, I thought it sucked. No one needs to buy this book, because there isn't really a point in buying movie tie-ins (the only exception was the Jerry Ordway drawn Batman adaptation) but I liked it in it's own corny way. Daredevil 62 W: Brian Michael Bendis A: Alex Maleev P: Marvel Comics G: 3/5 Still excellent dialogue and the art continues to grow on me, but, when I finished, I asked myself "What was the point of the issue and what did it accomplish that we didn't know last issue?" The answer: nothing. DC Comics Presents Green Lantern 1 W/A: Various P: DC Comics G: 4/5 Another mixed bag. I LOVED the opening Azzarello/Breyfogle story, which ended on one of those sick jokes only Azzarello could pull off. The second story was sadly lacking, but McDaniel's art was nice as usual. The Flash 212 W: Geoff Johns A: Steven Cummings P: DC Comics G: 3.5/5 Another solid Rouge profile, but every time Johns devotes an issue to another Rogue, I just keep asking myself why the heck he can't put it in a bloody "Secret Files and Origins." Hawkman 30 W: Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray A: Ryan Sook P: DC Comics G: 5/5 Another AMAZING issue, with one of those cliffhangers that just sucker-punches you. Identity Disc 2 W: Robert Rodi A: John Higgins P: Marvel Comics G: 4/5 I am still enjoying this so much more than I know I should. The Deadpool/ Bullseye dialogue is wonderful and the art continues to improve. I'm not quite sure it's worth your three bucks when Rodi's other miniseries deserves your money so much more, but this is destined to be a fanboy guilty pleasure for years to come. Justice League Elite 1 W: Joe Kelly A: Doug Mahnke P: DC Comics G: 1.5/5 The writing is still in the toilet (literally in the final scene that directly rips off The Authority) but Mahnke is obviously having fun with the art. I'm not coming back for seconds, though. Ever. The Legion 35 W: Gail Simone A: Dan Jurgens and Andy Smith P: DC Comics G: 5/5 First issue of Legion ever; I could never pass up one of my favorite writers teamed with two of my favorite artists. And it was bloody brilliant. The art has never looked so good and Simone knocks it out of the park. Loki 2 W: Robert Rodi A: Esad Ribic P: Marvel Comics G: 5/5 This is turning into masterpiece quality work. Outsiders 14 W: Judd Winick A: Tom Raney P: DC Comics G: 4.5/5 The best issue of Outsiders in recent memory, the Nightwing/Jade scenes were perfectly scripted and Raney's pencil artwork is extraordinary. Plastic Man 8 W/A: Kyle Baker P: DC Comics G: 5/5 A new storyarc begins, and it is hilarious, making me laugh out loud at various points in time. If you have yet to try Plastic Man, or didn't like the premier, NOW IS THE TIME. Robin 128 W: Bill Willingham A: Damion Scott P: DC Comics G: 1/5 Why should I care again? And Scott's artwork is plain rushed and ugly this issue. What happened, dude!? Seaguy 3 W: Grant Morrison A: Cameron Stewart P: Vertigo Comics G: 3.5/5 The best issue of the miniseries, and has some great ideas that the first two issues lacked, but the ending left me cold to the entire idea of the book. Still, some fun to be had if nothing spectacular. She-Hulk 5 W: Dan Slott A: Paul Pelletier P: Marvel Comics G: 4.5/5 I hadn't tried this book yet, but if this issue's invention and wittiness is any indication, I need to start sorting through back issues ASAP. Wonder Woman 206 W: Greg Rucka A: Drew Johnson P: DC Comics G: 4/5 Very good, but seemed awfully like a filler issue. X-Men 159 W: Chuck Austen A: Salvador Larroca P: Marvel Comics G: 3/5 Some fun to be had (especially with Fish Boy and Emma Frost) but for the most part the story is dreadfully ordinary. The art saves it, though. Cool Stuff I Saw This Week 1. Loki- Again, if you hate the new direction of Thor as much as I do, this is must reading. 2. Greg Rucka does funny- And the surprising thing is, he does it wonderfully on Adventures of Superman 3. Captain Marvel: Read it, tell me your reaction, because I still am not quite sure what to make of it. 4. The Flash 212 Cover: This is easily the best cover I have seen this month. Perfect mirror image. 5. Dan Jurgens and Andy Smith: They are back and better than ever! Book of the Week: Loki Worst Book of the Week: Robin Biggest Disappointment of the Week: Batman: Gotham Knights Biggest Surprise of the Week: Legion Best Writing of the Week: Robert Rodi Best Art of the Week: Tom Raney -Robert Taylor _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [11] Multiverse Observer and Explorer Reviews Paul Dale Roberts Silhouet98@cs.com [Paul promotes amateur and professional comic book artwork, scripts, storylines, and unpublished comic books with a newsletter called the Peoples' Comic Book Newsletter. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Name: Mars - Horse with no Name Publisher: Tokyopop Creator: Fuyumi Soryo Price: $9.99 Comments: This story shows when Kira met Rei for the very first time. They both fall deeply in love. Then long time friends Tatsuya and Rei battle it out for the affection of Kira. This story will show you if and how they will mend their friendship and who really gets Kira's heart. Fuyumi Soryo treats the readers to two short shorts in this graphic manga comic book. The artwork is mediocre manga, let's just say I have seen better. Name: Lone Wolf 2100 - The Language of Chaos Vol. 2 Publisher: Dark Horse Comics Creator: Mike Kennedy and Francisco Ruiz Velasco Price: $12.95 Comments: This story is about an android named Itto and a human named Daisy Ogami who are very close to each other in many ways. Daisy Ogami is the young daughter of the murdered masters of Itto. Both must stick closely together, because they are on the run from the Cygnat Owari Corporation. This corporation has their own agents after this duo. What is at stake? Their lives for one and the future of mankind. Daisy carries a deep secret that could either save the world or destroy it. The reader is taken to ruins of a plague ridden city and desert wastes that will remind us of Mad Max. The plague ridden city is populated by outcasts of androids and cyborgs. You will also find out that the cyborg - human line is very blurry, sometimes it's hard to distinguish the two groups and you will find out in this exciting dramatic story. The artwork is 'off the hook!". Name: Snow Drop Vol 4 Publisher: Tokyopop Creator: Choi Kyung-Ah Price: $9.99 Comments: Sun-Mi, a very sexy lady can't stand the intimate relationship between Hae-Gi and So-Na and she will try everything in her power to break this couple apart. She even hires some goons to do a number on So-Na, then Sun-Mi lures Hae-Gi away to make him her boy toy. There is a Summer wedding shocker and while this is all happening Hae-Gi is running away from some guy named Charles, because he owes money to Charles and when Charles gets a hold of Hae-Gi, it's not going to be a pretty picture. The artwork is average manga style. Now a word from our sponsors Kira, Itto, Sun-Mi and even Mad Max: "Buy Snow Drop, Lone Wolf 2100 and Mars: Horse with no Name!" Kira: "You girls out there love a good love story, then read Mars: Horse with no Name and see how two guys will fight it out for my affection!" Mad Max: "If you loved the post apocalyptic Australian outback, then you will like the scenery in Lone Wolf 2100!" Itto: "Thanks for the plug Mad Max!" Sun-Mi: "If you love bad girls, then that is me and you should be buying Snow Drop, don't listen to Mad Max, he's nothing but a big flirt!" Name: Frankenstein Mobster #4 Publisher: Image Creator: Mark Wheatley Price: $2.95 Comments: Frankenstein Mobster just keeps getting better and better! It's nice to know that Frankenstein Mobster feels confident that he is in charge of his own body, thanks to the talimans. At some point of time, I want to know more about Terry Todd, the police father of young beautiful Terri Todd. It appears that Terri Todd has a very interesting family history and I want to see this elaborated on in some future issue. There is plenty of arresting development in seeing Terri with her gun drawn. A lot of exciting things were happening in Frankenstein Mobster #4 with Jerry Goblin hurt and later to learn at the end that Frankenstein Mobster may have been the cause of Terry Todd's demise...now that was a shocker! I really got a kick out of the car chase too! Nothing but thrills all found right here in your comic book! Name: The Nail #2 Publisher: Dark Horse Comics Creators: Rob Zombie, Steve Niles & Nat Jones Price: $2.99 Comments: Absolutely loved The Nail #2! The best horror comics I found on the market were comic books by Clive Barker and Brian Pulido. Clive Barker's comic books have all disappeared and Brian Pulido is now getting back into the horrific fold with Avatar comics. Now I have found another creator of horror comic books that is just as exciting. That creator is Rob Zombie! The legendary Rob Zombie really kept my attention in this comic book! Rob Zombie writes a great story, it's almost like he has witnessed these events himself. How dramatic and scary as Kat tells her story of being stripped by some unknown beasts that carry the mark of Satan on their foreheads. They looked very demonic and are potentially very dangerous, especially when they smell like death. That was quite the horrific scene at the campsite. With a laughing corpse, monster with battle ax and now The Inquisitor, Duncan and Rex have their hands full! When I took a Sociology class in college, we studied cults in America and I sought out the Hare Krishna, Peoples' Temple and The Church of Satan in San Francisco. The Church of Satan gave me a goat/star symbol to wear around my neck and then they asked me to leave the church, because they found out I was writing my book report! Anyway, looking for more on the Nail Part 3!
